We’re just not going to take this any more – The Brexit Fightback Part 2

MPs, democracy is how you got your jobs - respect it or be removed

The above MPs all have some kind of profile and are known by at least a proportion of the population. In many cases these are people who actively seek the spotlight, so we thought they wouldn’t mind be shown up by us.

These MPs all represent constituencies that voted Leave in the EU Referendum. Our criteria for being included on this list were as follows :-

  • Represent a Leave constituency
  • Voted Remain in the EU Referendum, and/or
  • Voted for anti-Brexit motions in Parliament, and/or
  • Are publicly against a clean Brexit
  • Have a higher than average public profile

The Rogues’ List - The prominent Remain MPs representing Leave constituencies

Below is the list of prominent Remain MPs showing their constituencies and how many votes it would take to unseat them.

The final column, “Switched votes to unseat” refers to MPs’ majorities at the 2017 General Election. It shows the number of voters who would need to switch their votes to the second-placed candidate, assuming everything else stayed the same, in order for the MP to be unseated at the next election.

Note that this figure is half their majorities, because when a vote is switched from an MP to the second-placed candidate the MP’s majority is reduced by one but the second-placed candidate’s goes up by one, which reduces an MP’s majority by two.

The table is ordered by the most vulnerable MPs at the top.

The Brexit Party effect

When we first started looking at vulnerable MPs, the Brexit Party didn't exist. In the EU elections they gained 32% of the vote, having come from nowhere a couple of months ago.

On this basis we consider that even relatively large majorities cannot be looked upon as being safe. For example, arch-Remoaner Yvette Cooper's majority of 14,500 would normally look impregnable. However her constituency voted to Leave by almost 70%. The big change since the 2017 General Election is that Ms Cooper has worked tirelessly to thwart Brexit. We wonder what her constituents think about that?

Let’s threaten their jobs – now

All MPs will continue to play a prominent part in the process of securing Brexit – or otherwise. This is now even more the case after Commons Speaker John Bercow announced last week that he will not be standing down after all. With Bercow still in charge anything is possible, even with a new, potentially pro-Brexit Prime Minister.

It therefore becomes essential that all those who still value democracy must stand up to be counted. This means making our views known to these MPs, and doing so effectively.

What you can do

In tomorrow’s article we look at ALL Remain MPs in Leave constituencies, showing just how vulnerable they are to a switched vote at the next General Election. We will also provide essential advice and details on how to get your message through to your MP in the most effective manner.

Observations

In compiling the above list we looked at MPs’ voting records at all stages of the passage of Brexit through the House of Commons. We also reviewed their speeches in the House, statements they have given to the press, and articles they have written.

Our selection of 'prominent' MPs was naturally subjective. We tried to reflect the entire country with the exception of Northern Ireland, where matters are more complex. Some readers will know some of the MPs in our Rogues' Gallery but not others, but this will differ for readers across the country.

Our list includes current and former ministers, current and former shadow ministers, Conservative leadership candidates, and even the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party and the Chairman of the Conservative Party.
