Yesterday it seemed the Prime Minister has now started rowing back on the Government’s hugely costly ‘climate change’ agenda.

These first small moves are welcome, but in this report we once again provide the evidence to show how the punishing rises in the cost of living due to Net Zero policies have never been underpinned by the facts of the UK’s emissions of greenhouse gases.

What the Prime Minister announced yesterday

More than 100 new oil and gas licences will be granted in the UK, the Prime Minister announced on Monday (31 July 2023) as the UK Government belatedly starts to back the North Sea oil and gas industry once again, as part of its drive to make Britain more energy independent.

This comes as new analysis released by the NSTA (the North Sea Transition Authority) yesterday showed that the carbon footprint of domestic gas production is around one-quarter of the carbon footprint of imported liquefied natural gas.

As the UK has been a rapidly declining producer of oil and gas as a result of government policies, new oil and gas licences will eventually reduce the rate of fall in UK supply in order to ensure vital energy security. Unfortunately the Government’s plan is not to increase production – merely to slow the decline.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said:

“We have all witnessed how Putin has manipulated and weaponised energy – disrupting supply and stalling growth in countries around the world. Now more than ever, it’s vital that we bolster our energy security and capitalise on that independence to deliver more affordable, clean energy to British homes and businesses.
“Even when we’ve reached net zero in 2050, a quarter of our energy needs will come from oil and gas. But there are those who would rather that it come from hostile states than from the supplies we have here at home.

“We’re choosing to power up Britain from Britain and invest in crucial industries such as carbon capture and storage, rather than depend on more carbon intensive gas imports from overseas – which will support thousands of skilled jobs, unlock further opportunities for green technologies and grow the economy.”

The facts about the world’s greenhouse gas emissions and the UK’s negligible involvement

Below we have analysed the totality of the world’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and show how the UK is virtually irrelevant when looking at the culprits for this.

GHG includes CO2, methane, nitrous oxide, and trace gases such as the group of ‘F-gases’. Climate scientists have weighted these according to their estimated effects on ‘global warming’. The aggregate is expressed as a ‘CO2 equivalent’. In short, this is a more complete measure than simply looking at CO2 emissions on their own.

Once again Brexit Facts4EU.Org has presented readers with a summary of the raw data about an important topic of the moment. We would like to think that some of the climate protesters will read this, but we doubt it. At least some of our MPs will.

Is it reasonable to impoverish the British people over the next 20 years for the sins of other countries? The UK's output of all greenhouse gases represents little more than a rounding error when looking at the huge emissions from the rest of the world. In the case of China and Asian countries these are actually growing.

Is it right for Sadiq Kahn to make our capital city one of the most expensive in the world in which to drive a car or delivery van? Is it right for low-paid night-shift workers to face a £25 fee for driving to work at night and returning the next morning?

The welcome news above is that the Prime Minister finally seems to accept that the United Kingdom requires more energy self-sufficiency. Now he will need to legislate to ensure that major banks like NatWest and the major insurers will offer their services to the oil and gas companies again. We revealed this catastrophic state of affairs on Sunday and very rapid action is now required.

This is a global issue. We may not produce emissions as we did in the past but imports are £900bn (48% from EU). £49bn from China. You can’t point the finger at other countries and ignore that we import from those countries.

Countries like China don't give a hoot about global emissions.
They are full smoke ahead to grow their economies and dominate while other countries lag away to save the world.
The Uk should be getting 100% of its oil and gas from our EEZ and only importing if there is a slight shortfall.
It's been so long since actually extracting worthy amounts that the crustaceans have probably made more oil.
Vastly Reducing our harmful emissions is essential for the health of our land, Sea and atmosphere but all countries must do it and in a way that makes sense for all.

reported in trade magazine The Grocer regarding the import controls coming in at UK ports (these are the controls that JRM delayed on the basis they were an act of self harm) – displayed that only 60% of EU businesses planned to continue supplying to the UK at the same rate after the new checks are in place. 10% responded that they aimed to reduce the frequency and range of UK-based customers they served, while 7% stated they would halt trade altogether. Businesses have now warned that the upcoming festive season will face “significant disruption” to holiday trading as a result.

So UK will be forced to import more product from further away adding to CO2 emissions even further.

Rishi goes to Scotland to show support for 'Carbon capture scheme', meanwhile the SNP/Green alliance admit to felling 16 million 'Carbon capture' units to develop wind farms.

0.05% that's the percentage of the atmosphere composed of CO2
0.35%, that's the percentage of the above CO2 that is man made
Less than 1%, that's the percentage of the man made CO2 generated by the UK.

It's no more believable that human generated CO2 is raising global temperatures than it is to believe that a person urinating off of Brighton pier would raise global sea temperatures

On the flip side that will mean more food production can be brought onshore (as stated in another Grocer article “The race for onshoring”) to make up the deficit which will be a boon for our farmers, food tech industry and food manufacturers. Also, perhaps if the EU producers had done more to prepare for these changes (which the article you quote admits) then they wouldn’t find themselves in this situation. Every cloud has a sliver lining. It’s all about perspective.

Isn't your £900 Billion import figure including services ? Services are a large part of this figure and most don't produce emissions, or very little. When comparing Europe with the rest of the world you have to remember that 70% of Europe's Imports come from distant locations so importing from Europe does not necessarily resulting in less carbon emissions. It would be helpful if you would offer constructive suggestion as to what you think the UK should be doing.

One of the main Brexit Freedoms is the Government can react to market changes immediately. We no longer have to wait a huge amount of time for the EU to make a decision with countries using veto's to obstruct the process. Maybe UK farmers will be happy to read this news. There are also articles in the Grocer saying "Britain's food supply is coming home". There are many benefits to having trading relationships with distant countries eg. different climate cycles, different climates, different soil types, effects of regional diseases (swine fever etc), extreme weather (floods, heat waves, droughts, wildfires etc). The UK will be in a good position to react to changes immediately.

I agree with you comment. I am not even convinced this is a priority for the Green Party !

The Green Party have been in control of Brighton's council for some time now and their MP is from the Green Parity. If you go to Brighton it's like a constant traffic jam full of mainly large vehicles emitting fumes. Where is the "park and ride" or the ULEZ ? Of course these would effect the local economy and income from parking. It seems that when there is a choice the local economy overrides green policies.

I've been telling everyone who would listen and those that wouldn't, for years. If you believe CO2 is destroying the planet (and I don't) Don't try and cripple the UK to save it. Our emissions are so small as to be irrelevant. Tackle the big polluters.
