Nearly half of NHS staff are not clinically qualified

However, doctor numbers are up by 19%, “despite Brexit”

Part II of our report into the state of our health service

In Part I of this two-part report on NHS staffing, we showed overall NHS staffing numbers across the four nations of the UK, excluding GPs and primary care providers. We exploded the myth still repeated by Remainer-Rejoiners that Brexit would result in huge numbers leaving the UK's healthcare sector.

Today we reveal the extent of the bloated bureaucracy which has been allowed to build up around front-line medical staff. We also show the increase in doctor numbers since the United Kingdom left the European Union. This is despite the fact we were warned that voting Leave would lead to a reduction.

A Brexit Facts4EU.Org Two-Parter

Part I – Total numbers of NHS employees declared, excluding GPs and primary care workers
Part II – Massive growth in number of non patient-facing staff (This report)

Health warning : The classifications from the Office for National Statistics – based on what they obtained from the devolved administrations - are so poor that we went to NHS England for some clarity.

NHS non-front-line staffing numbers – our best estimates based on the reported figures

Because of our limited resources we have not been able to look separately at the devolved NHS administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland but we doubt the trends we show below will be very different.

England and the three devolved administrations of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland each report numbers in different ways. This makes it impossible to give definitive figures for the proportion of what most people would NOT consider to be ‘front-line healthcare workers’.

Who is included in the figures from NHS England?

This group includes all NHS England Hospital & Community Health Service (HCHS) doctors, qualified nurses and health visitors, midwives, qualified scientific, therapeutic and technical staff and qualified ambulance staff.

These DO NOT include the ranks of those working for contractors such as CAPITA who provide services to NHS Trusts.

To summarise, NHS staffing numbers increased by 212,000 in the last four years, and doctor numbers went up by 24,000.

EU doctors

Following a review early last year, the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) concluded in the summer that the current provisions for EU doctors will remain in place ‘for a temporary period of five years’, meaning EU qualified healthcare professionals can continue to register with their regulator without further assessment.

As part of ‘Project Fear’ it was claimed by Remainers that doctors from the EU would flood out of the country if we voted to Leave. This simply hasn’t happened and indeed additional doctors from the EU continue to come each year.

Observations

So why is the NHS performing so badly?

It is not our job to report on the failings of the NHS but we must say it is disturbing that when overall staff numbers are increasing each year – including the numbers of doctors and nurses – then attention must focus on poor management, a bloated bureaucracy, and poor supervision.

The NHS England waiting list stands at 7.8 million, and this does not include the other three nations of the United Kingdom. This is a simply shocking state of affairs.

Ambulance waiting times as well as Accident and Emergency waiting times are now a national disgrace. It must be questioned whether we will ever have in our lifetimes a government capable of sorting out this mess.

Questions :-

  • When will the Government move to increase number of placements for British students wishing to become doctors, instead of importing them from abroad?
  • Same question for nurses
  • When will the Government act to stop the requirement for British nurses to do an expensive degree course?
