On Sunday (15 Dec 2024) the UK formally accessed to membership of the enormous Trans-Pacific trading bloc known under its acronym ‘CPTPP’. This represents another huge ‘Brexit benefit’ and Rejoiners have been keen to try to minimise it. What follows makes it impossible for them to do this and retain any credibility.

As the British think-tank which has produced more reports on this subject than any other similar organisation in the last four years, today we summarise this great deal for the UK’s consumers and businesses. “Having made the UK’s formal application to join the CPTPP when I was International Trade Secretary, I’m delighted our membership of this vibrant trading bloc has finally been secured. Not only does it underline our position as a truly global trading nation, but the bloc also serves as a critical bulwark against China.
“Make no mistake, this was achieved by Conservatives in office - no thanks to the Labour politicians whose tedious attachment to the EU model prevents them from grasping the benefits of Brexit as we pursue an independent trade policy, no longer shackled by Brussels.

“It’s important to remember that the crucial precursor to joining CPTPP was the trade deal I negotiated with Australia - which the Labour Party actively opposed at the time. So whatever platitudes emanate from the mouths of government ministers are frankly weasel words because this important development would never have happened if it had been left to them.”

“More recently, we saw a news blackout both from the BBC and from Sir Keir Starmer’s new government when the UK crossed the magical threshold of six countries ratifying the UK’s accession. Having six countries of the CPTPP ratifying, guaranteed the UK’s formal accession on Sunday (15 December). The sixth country was Peru, and our creative team was able to have some fun with Paddington Bear. For me this is one of my favourite ‘tiles’ of the year, as it also features Her late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

“Finally, I truly hope that our continued efforts to present great, uplifting news to the public (and to MPs, Peers and the mainstream media) will continue to pay off. We simply must not let the Rejoiners get away with their continual, depressing messages, containing information which is simply untrue.

Vietnam has become the main source of migrants arriving in the UK in small boats. And Vietnam is also a member of the CPTPP.
Trump would have threatened Vietnam with massive tariffs unless they tackle the immigration. Brexit Britain instead is celebrating being a member of the CPTPP … that is the difference between putting America First versus Wanting to Make Brexit a Success.

This is an excellent time to celebrate. Anyone saying CPTPP is rubbish are frankly living on another planet. No mention of this from the UK prime minister or BBC which tells you all you need to know. Why on earth would Britain lock it's self down to EU law and regulation when there are hundreds of other countries in the world. Labour scare the sh#t out of me.

There was some kind of trade spat with the Canadians concerning cheese. I seem to recall they've slapped punitive tariffs on cheese imports from the UK.
Presumably they cannot do this any more now that we are full members of CPTPP ? Has that unfortunate problem now been sorted ?

Another one is wheat imports from Canada. Bizarrely, at a time of high food inflation we were still charging an import tariff on Canadian wheat.
Presumably that import tariff will no longer apply ?
I look forward to cheaper bread and other flour-based products. Will it actually happen ?

I've just run a search on the BBC News site for "CPTPP".
The most recent hit is from January this year.
As far as I can see, there is no mention that this agreement went live on 15 Dec 2024.
On the Business page, the #1 story is UK inflation being the highest for 8 months. There is no mention of CPTPP; but there are stories about "rage baiting and why it is profitable" and "meet Karol G, Columbia's answer to Taylor Swift".
In BBC-World, these stories are clearly more important to business than CPTPP.

It's encouraging to see that so many new countries are queuing up to join the CPTPP and several others have expressed an interest to join. The UK is in a perfect position to influence the future direction of the CPTPP so it suits our economy especially the high value service sectors.

The uniqueness of the EU as a "political union" prevent it from functioning for the benefit of it's citizens. It's usually mired down by political ideologies, funding disagreements, tax avoidance disagreements, trade disputes, fiscal and currency problems and just about everything else. No other region in the world is interested in copying the EU model for very obvious reasons.

The UK should see the EU purely as a trading partner, this is how the rest of the world interacts with the EU, and other areas of the world in a similar manner. This will allow UK companies to take advantage of all opportunities and minimise the risk of one region being heavily involved in trading disputes. Unfortunately political motives and personal gains often get in the way of genuine economic growth.

If you pay billions into an organisation that tells you that you now have a Free Trade Agreement with them how can it be FREE? Yet that is what we did.
