The EU’s fabled ‘Single Market’ was founded 30 years ago, on 01 Jan 1993, and the EU is celebrating. But what do they have to celebrate about?

Facts4EU.Org and CIBUK.Org have reviewed the latest reports from the EU Commission on the failings in its Single Market – particularly in respect of the services sector which accounts for 80% of the UK economy. We have also reviewed the World Bank’s latest ‘Ease of Doing Business’ country rankings, which was referred to in a major EU Commission report.

In Part One of this Facts4EU 30th anniversary special we focus on the World Bank country rankings. In Part Two we show how the UK's growth actually fell after joining the EU's Single Market. And in Part Three we will provide proof from the EU Commission itself that the UK benefited from the Single Market least out of all the 28 countries.

The EU’s ‘Single Market’ doesn’t make it easier to do business

The World Bank’s rankings clearly show how the UK is streets ahead of the EU average when it comes to ‘the ease of doing business’.

The World Bank says: “‘Ease of doing business’ ranks economies from 1 to 190, with first place being the best. The ranking of economies is determined by sorting the aggregate ‘ease of doing business’ scores. A high ranking (a low numerical rank) means that the regulatory environment is conducive to business operation.”

The World Bank’s rankings look at a wide variety of important factors when doing business in any given country.

Observations

Whatever the shortcomings in the World Bank’s methodology in ranking countries might be, one thing is clear. Brexit Britain is far superior to the EU27 when it comes to doing business.

The UK has consistently outshone the EU27 in these World Bank reports, in spite of the impediments imposed by the increasing raft of EU Commission interference on the UK in terms of laws, directives and regulations.

It is now essential that the UK Government of Rishi Sunak proceeds with all speed in repealing the 4,000+ EU laws which hold Brexit Britain back. In the seventh year since the country voted for Brexit, we are sure that a very dim view will be taken by voters if the Civil Service drags its feet and if Ministers do not impose their will, with strict targets to be achieved. All these restrictions need to be removed THIS YEAR - as promised.

In Part Two….

In the second part of this report we will look at the EU’s Single Market – to which Rejoiners of course want us to stay closely aligned and ultimately rejoin. We will demonstrate – with official government data - how the UK's economic growth actually fell after the country joined the Single Market and we will summarise the EU’s own evaluation of how poorly this totemic EU policy has performed in the interests of consumers and businesses.

The single market for services is indeed incomplete. It is harder to make work than a single market for goods. For goods all you need is products made to the same standards - which is what the EU has done - and you have a single market. But for services how can you have a single market for lawyers, for example, when law is different in different countries? A lawyer qualified in Bulgaria would need to requalify in Finland - for example - as the law there is different. (Though an English lawyer would also need to requalify in Scottish law to work there so even within the UK the single market in services is not complete).
But although the single market in services was not perfect it was pretty good. Touring musicians and their entourages have, rightly, got much press. They used to be able to work anywhere in the EU as and when they liked. And now they can’t.
But there are other areas like the mutual recognition of qualifications where the EU has made huge progress. Despite its fault the EU’s single market for services is, by far, the most advanced in the world - and forcefully removing the UK from that market, which the Brexitists have done, is bad from British business and British people.
Of course most of the Brexitists are retired and haven’t done a days work in decades so they have no clue how this stuff actually works in 2023. Suffice to say you have screwed over your grandkids and they hate you for it. But at least you stopped the brown people coming. Oh…..

The rejoiniac losers who haunt this site like Hamlet's Ghost, use it as a vehicle to vent their frustrations, at the reality of the fact that there is no going back to the EU for the UK. No party apart from the Libdems support it - it is not going to happen. What is more interesting, is what will these sad people; the Lord Haw Haw's of the 21st century do, when their beloved EU folds, due to it's internal contradictions. Eastern Europe, led by Poland, is already pulling the centre of gravity eastwards.

The "single market" for services isn't incomplete, it's non existent.
But services are a major part of the FTA's the UK has been agreeing with third parties.

It isn't a single market anyway, it's 27 separate markets with different VAT rates and different currencies.
You don't need to have the same standards to trade between markets, you merely need to ensure your products comply with the standards of the markets you are selling in.

A future government could not initiate a referendum without a manifesto commitment to do so, and neither the Tories not Labour (realistically the only two likely to be elected to govern) will include such a commitment in their election manifestos.
The SNP won't either, as they don't really want to be in the EU, despite their rhetoric.

To rejoin the EU, the UK would have to annul the bespoke FTA agreements it will have entered into, including with:
Australia
New Zealand
India
GCC
And CPTPP membership.
So it's not going to happen.

We don’t need a referendum - a general election is enough. And we only have to win once.
We also don’t have a trade deal with India - turns out those pesky brown people want visas - we aren’t members of CPTPP. And your deals with NZ and Australia are crap. The EU will have better ones by the time we rejoin.
It is also false to say services are a part of our trade deals. They aren’t. You also lie about the EU single market in services being non-existent. This is a complete falsehood spewed by Brexitists who do not understand the extent of the services sector.
Let’s take some examples. Photographers. British photographers used to be able to offer their services across Europe thanks to free movement. You took away their free movement now they can’t work across Europe as they please. The same is true of architects, engineers, scientists, teachers, medics, creatives, hauliers. The list goes on.
I am sure you are retired and haven’t worked for decades. The sort of service jobs you have destroyed are good jobs. The people whose jobs you have taken hate you.

Incidentally, not only do I go to work but I pay more tax than you ever have or ever will.

My friend is a photographer and her business has been decimated by your Brexit because you stole her free movement. Is this what you voted for? Do you even understand what you did?

9- Buster, that right there is an example of what I was saying. You know absolutely zero about me, nor I you, but you assume that you pay more tax than I have or ever will. You have no idea of what my profession is nor my age, yet you express a belief that you are better than everyone else here because you consider yourself 'younger' than anyone else is! Brexit is by no means perfect, and there will always be issue's to deal with as time passes, that's life, but by continuously wishing people who are older than yourself to be dead a.s.a.p and being insultive towards others simply because they have a different view does not solve anything.! It causes more division. Incidentally, I'm in my mid-20's and very happily voted Leave, before you express anything else as regards to Leave voters. Are you older, younger or about the same age as me, I wonder? That's a rhetorical question, by the way.
