It is a fact that this year the UK Home Office has approved more EU migrants each month than the number of illegal boat migrants who have arrived all year.

Official deadline for applying for settlement : 30 June 2021, a year and five months after Brexit

The official deadline for all EU nationals, their dependents, plus EEA, EFTA and Swiss nationals (as required by the EU under its UK-EU Withdrawal Agreement) who claim the right to live in the UK after Brexit was 30 June 2021.

This has been extended by the Home Office many times, with no requirement in law to do this.

As shown above, almost 0.9 million have claimed settlement rights after the deadline and an astonishing 0.5 million have done so in the first nine months of this year. More than 400,000 have already been accepted this year.

Where are these people in the United Kingdom?

The official Home Office data shows that Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have barely been troubled. 94% of the applications received this year relate to England only.

This follows a similar pattern to the entirety of the 6.9 million applications since the scheme began, with 92% of them coming from EU nationals in England.

Observations

As this is the final part in our four-part EU immigration series we must once again stress that EU migrants who can prove their residency in the United Kingdom prior to Brexit have a legal right to remain.

What is questionable, however, is why the scheme has been extended so many times. It is certainly not because of delays by the Home Office, who have undertaken a herculean task for all these EU citizens.

Would Emmanuel Macron make this number of exceptions for British citizens?

The EU stipulated a cut-off point of 30 June 2021. Would a country like France, say, still approve applications from UK citizens living there? We doubt it very much.

One thing is very clear. The numbers of EU citizens being approved by the Home Office for the permanent right to stay in the UK completely dwarfs the number of illegal migrants arriving in small boats from France. And this is continuing, month after month.

The Government could score a quick win here

We would urge the Government to declare a final cut-off point for all applications for settlement in the UK under the UK-EU Withdrawal Agreement of 31 December 2022. This would send a clear message that the Government is serious about dealing with the immigration crisis.

Finally, it seems odd to us that the BBC, Sky News, and other broadcasters have not seen fit to run anything on this. Readers will no doubt draw their own conclusions as to why this is.

We must get reports like this out there

Reports like the one above take far longer to research, write and produce than many people realise. If they were easy, readers would see other organisations also producing these daily.

However, there’s little point in the Facts4EU.Org team working long hours, seven days-a-week, if we lack the resources to promote them effectively – to the public, to MPs, and to the media. This is where you come in, dear reader.
