Facts4EU.Org analyses the official numbers of EU migrants and why they came

A four-part Facts4EU.Org and CIBUK.Org investigation into
who came to the UK legally from the EU – and why

  1. Part One – Where did the 6.7 million legal EU migrants come from? [THIS REPORT]
  2. Part Two – How much more could they earn in the UK than in their EU country of origin?
  3. Part Three – Unemployment : How much better were job prospects in the UK than in the EU?
  4. Part Four – Home Office still approves more EU migrants PER MONTH than illegal boat migrants all year to date

In this four-part landmark report, we provide the official facts

It is a simple fact that the Government doesn’t know how many EU citizens are living and working in the United Kingdom. For decades EU citizens could come and go as they pleased, uncounted. Now however, with the UK having left the EU, the Home Office has some data thanks to the Brexit requirement for EU citizens to register for what is known as ‘Settlement’.

On 24 November the Home Office published its latest data on all applications by EU citizens for the right to settle (and work and claim benefits) in the UK. Naturally this does not include those who have not registered and are working in the black economy.

The truth about the EU’s ‘Freedom of Movement’ and what it meant to the British people

In this four-part series, Facts4EU.Org unravels the facts for readers. How many EU migrants came and from which countries? How much better were the wages in the UK than back home? And how much better were the job prospects? And finally we ask how it's possible that half a million more have applied this year.

Part One – Where did the 6.9 million legal EU migrants to the UK come from?

Facts4EU.Org has analysed the latest data from the Home Office regarding what is called “the EU Settlement Scheme”. This is the formal scheme for registering all EU migrants who arrived before the UK formerly left the European Union and who therefore have residency rights under the Withdrawal Agreement (WA).

It is important to note that those entitled under the EU’s WA also included citizens of countries outside the EU but inside EFTA and the EEA. In addition there were non-EU and non-EEA citizens who were family members of EU27, EFTA and EEA citizens, or who otherwise had the right to reside in the EU.

The number of applications continues to rise, even now

The UK Government has extended the deadline for applications to the EU Settlement Scheme so many times we have lost count. Even today they are dealing with new applications. In the month of September 2022 alone these amounted to 64,720. We will bring you all the facts in Part Four of this special Facts4EU.Org report into EU immigration into the UK.

How much more could they earn in the UK than in their EU country of origin?

In Part Two of this report we will look at the financial draw for the migrants who have been given residency under the EU’s Withdrawal Agreement. Please come back tomorrow to read this.

Observations

This is about legal immigration as a result of the UK's membership of the EU

The news has been dominated in recent days by the Channel boat migrant crisis, including the tragic deaths of yet more when a boat developed a leak in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Facts4EU.Org has published many reports on this, most recently here, but today we are shining the light on the far greater numbers of migrants who have made it to the United Kingdom perfectly legally, under the EU’s ‘Freedom of Movement’ laws, embodied in the UK-EU Withdrawal Agreement.

No-one is suggesting they be deported of course, as they have the legal right to make the UK their home. That said, the extremist-Rejoiners would willingly take the UK back into an empire that would once again impose ‘Freedom of Movement’ on the UK. This would only add to the massive immigration problems facing the country.

We believe the public has the right to know :-

  1. How many EU migrants came and from which countries?
  2. How much better were the wages in the UK than back home?
  3. How much better were the job prospects?
  4. And how is it possible that over 0.5 million more have applied for UK settlement this year?

For years British companies have had little incentive to invest in capital infrastructure to make them more efficient and productive. Cheap EU labour filled that need - but at the cost of no productivity gains to boost GDP further.

For years British people have seen their public services erode, as the pressure of a fast-growing population overwhelmed the ability of the NHS and other public bodies to keep pace with the growing demand. The building of new housing has fallen far behind what is needed, as is the case with school places, the ability to get a doctor’s or dentist’s appointment, the congestion on our roads, and the entire gamut of services which any civilised and developed nation should provide as a matter of course.

Our four-part series is therefore important. Please support Parts Two, Three and Four with a donation, if you can. We would like to get it out to all MPs as well as the media but we need your help.

We must get reports like this out there

Reports like the one above take far longer to research, write and produce than many people realise. If they were easy, readers would see other organisations also producing these daily.

However, there’s little point in the Facts4EU.Org team working long hours, seven days-a-week, if we lack the resources to promote them effectively – to the public, to MPs, and to the media. This is where you come in, dear reader.

Facts4EU.Org needs you today

We are a 'not for profit' team (we make a loss) and any payment goes towards the actual work, not plush London offices, lunch or taxi expenses, or other luxuries of some organisations.

We badly need more of our thousands of readers to become members, to support this work. Could this be you, today? It's quick and easy, we give you a choice of two highly secure payment providers, and we do NOT ask you for further support if you pay once. We just hope you keep supporting us. Your membership stays anonymous unless you tell us otherwise.

Please don't assume that other people will keep us going - we don't receive enough to survive and we need your help today. Could you help us? We rely 100% on public contributions from readers like you.
