AND SPEND MORE MONEY WHILE THERE

One indication of the relationship between countries is the number of visits made by citizens of one country to another country. We looked at the official data to see whether this holds true in the case of the USA, the UK, and the rest of the EU.
The British are the most numerous visitors to the US each year after neighbouring Canadians and Mexicans, according to official data from the US Dept of Commerce and the NTTO.
There were 4,573,708 visits from British people in 2016, easily outstripping the next most numerous, the Japanese. When it comes to Europeans, the British are far and away the most likely to visit America. The next nearest nationality, the Germans, managed less than half the visits of the Brits, despite having a significantly higher population.

OBSERVATIONS
You will find a common theme which emerges from this series of articles in our 'USA Special'.
The EU does not, in our opinion, do many things well. One area where it is particularly adept, however, is in its use of propaganda. Departments within the many EU Directorates which deal with Public Relations never seem to be short of money. Slick videos are produced on a regular basis, whether or not citizens are interested in watching them.
From this side of the Atlantic it is often hard to judge how much of the EU's propaganda hits the mark in the US. Certainly when Mr Obama was President, it seemed to us that only good things were ever heard about the EU in America.
In this 'USA Special' series of reports, we are therefore hoping to give you some more unusual information, in addition to trade figures and the usual statistics. Visits to a country by citizens of another country are something it is impossible for the EU's bureaucracy to fake. The EU isn't yet powerful enough to force people where they should go on vacation.
Whatever Americans might hear from their mainstream media, we are not all like the socialist muslim Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, who seems to loathe everything that many Americans hold dear. If we paid 4.6 million visits to your country in a year, we hope that this shows something about what ordinary folk like us think of the United States.

Great Britain dominates EU aviation

Here is what the UK means to the EU in terms of air transport:-
- No.1 in EU for number of passengers carried
- No.1 in EU for number of passengers carried intra-EU
- No.1 in EU for number of passengers carried extra-EU
- Has no.1 airport in EU (Heathrow) for number of passengers carried
- No.1 in EU for busiest intra-EU route (UK-Spain)
- The UK-Spain route alone accounts for 9.1% of all intra-EU traffic
- Has a total of 5 of the top 10 routes in the EU for intra-EU traffic

The latest official data from Eurostat, the EU's statistical agency, once again shows the UK's dominant position in aviation in the EU. The chart below shows how the UK is responsible for over 25% of all passenger numbers in the EU.

Growth in passenger numbers is one of the indicators of a healthy economy, which is one of the reasons the EU publishes this data. As you can see below, the UK's growth rate is significantly higher than that in the rest of Europe, on average.

OBSERVATIONS
A huge amount of nonsense is regularly pumped out concerning flights post-Brexit.
There is a lot of talk in the US right now about 'fake news'. Well trust us, we suffer from that problem on this side of the Atlantic too. The boss of the EU's largest low-cost airline, Ryanair, likes to threaten that all flights might stop on 30 March 2019 - the supposed exit date of the UK from the EU. Whenever he makes some announcement like this, the BBC and other mainstream media lap it up and dish it out. This would be laughable if it weren't worrying for many people.
On Brexit the EU has no choice but to aqree a continuation of normal arrangements. Apart from anything else, Heathrow remains the busiest airport in the EU and many people from all over the EU (especially Brussels) use Heathrow in order to travel around the world.
As you can see, air travel is yet another of those areas of life where the EU is much, much smaller without the United Kingdom.
