The terrible truth for the SNP: Scotland would go bankrupt if it separated

Exposed: The 7 killer blows for Scottish nationalists

New report lays bare the harsh realities of separation which no Scot could risk

The leaders of the SNP, Plaid Cymru and Sinn Fein recently assembled to make a joint statement on independence from the United Kingdom.

This report from the Brexit Facts4EU think-tank, working with Stand for Our Sovereignty and The Campaign for an Independent Britain (CIBUK.Org), makes it ‘game over’ for the independence-obsessed Scottish Government. Delving into the detail, it exposes how implausible the SNP’s case to the Scottish people really is.

This report, shared exclusively with our friends at GB News, delivers seven ‘killer blows’ to the SNP’s independence hopes.

Background: The UK subsidy system

Two separate mechanisms combine to keep Scotland’s economy afloat, requiring a massive annual cash transfer from the UK Treasury.

First, Scotland was awarded higher public spending per head than England 46 years ago, baked in via “the Barnett formula”.

Second, Scotland increases this favourable spending gap with England primarily through higher welfare benefits, as it statistically has a larger proportion of people ill or out of work.

[The late Joel (Lord) Barnett, ex-Chief Sec to HMT, c.1979]

Every time public spending in England increases, there is a corresponding percentage rise in Scotland applied to their more generous spending allowance.

Killer blow 1 - The twin subsidies

In 2025-26, the UK taxpayer provided an effective subsidy to every single man, woman, and child in Scotland of £4,563 per year. This bridged the difference between what the Scottish Government generated in taxes and what it spent on public services. This was £3,825 more per person than the subsidy allocated to the English.

This net subsidy per head from the English taxpayer is calculated with two factors:

  • The Spending Gap: Due to the Barnett formula, the system automatically gave every person in Scotland £3,296 more in public spending than those in England before a single penny of tax was considered.
  • The Tax Deficit: Despite including North Sea oil revenues, Scotland generated £529 less tax per head than England (£17,718 in Scotland vs £18,247 in England).

Rt Hon Lord Redwood D.Phil FCSI, former Single Market Minister and former Secretary of State
commented exclusively to GB News and Brexit Facts4EU

“Scotland would be a lot worse off if a majority voted for independence.

“England would no longer be sending large sums to subsidise higher public spending per head, as happens in the Union. Scotland would also need to raise her own money to pay the huge benefits bill in Scotland, made worse by Scottish policies that drive business investment and jobs south to England.

“As Facts4EU have revealed in their devastating study, taxes would need to go up a lot.

“Scotland gets more from the Union than it raises in tax revenue. It borrows too much thanks to the common UK credit card. The SNP constantly complain about too little money yet Scotland is sent large sums from English taxpayers to top up the money they pay in tax.

“Once independent, the new government would need to send large new tax bills to maintain services and pay benefits. It would at the same time have to cut borrowing. It would have to accept a portion of the large Union debts as it has relied on Union borrowing for so long.

“Happy independence, here’s the bill!”

Killer blow 2 - Scotland’s ‘Divorce Bill’

Just as occurred with the EU-UK Brexit negotiations, HM Treasury would immediately impose a multi-billion-pound divorce bill on an independent Scotland.

The UK's total national debt has recently breached the historic £3.0 trillion mark. Under international law, a separating Scotland would be compelled to inherit its pro-rata population share of this liability, equating to roughly £240 billion. Combined with its current domestic deficit of -£25.3 billion, Scotland would start life as a sovereign nation with a crippling debt-to-GDP ratio exceeding 110%, pushing its economy into dangerous territory.

Killer blow 3 - The destruction of trade

The SNP intends to join the EU, which would require establishing an independent currency to satisfy EU membership rules. This action would instantly create a hard economic land border with Scotland's largest trading partner.

The rest of the UK absorbs roughly 60% of all Scottish exports. This internal UK market share is worth more than three times Scotland's trade with the entire EU27 combined.

Killer blow 4 - Severe land border costs

Adopting a separate currency means that every single cross-border contract, supermarket shipment, and supply chain transaction between Scotland and England would suddenly be hit with foreign exchange fees, hedging costs, and currency risk. These administrative friction points would severely damage Scottish corporate profits and disrupt established intra-UK trade pipelines.

Below we can reveal the proportion of intra-UK trade going to each of the other three nation states.

Killer blow 5 - The Sterling delusion

The SNP proposal involves continuing to use the British pound informally before transitioning to a new, independent Scottish Pound.

During this initial period, Scotland would have no central bank of its own, no control over its interest rates, and no lender of last resort to bail out its financial sector. The Bank of England would continue to set monetary policy purely for the economic interests of the remaining UK nations, leaving Edinburgh completely defenceless during any future economic shock or banking crisis.

Killer blow 6 - Extreme capital flight risk

To protect their personal wealth and corporate assets from the sudden devaluation that would accompany the launch of a new Scottish pound, Scottish citizens and major financial institutions would rapidly move their cash out of Scottish banks.

They would deposit these funds into safe Sterling accounts in England. This massive capital flight would drain vital liquidity from the nascent Scottish banking system, forcing their new central bank to hike interest rates to ruinous levels to keep money in the country, inevitably risking national bankruptcy.

Killer blow 7 - A defenceless nation

Scotland currently hosts many vital UK military bases, major defence contractors, and a proud military tradition.

Despite this, the SNP plans to remove the UK nuclear deterrent to become a nuclear-free nation reliant on its own newly created military and intelligence services.

During a long and volatile security transition, Scotland would find itself relatively defenceless and be forced to pay London directly for defence protection. Simultaneously, the nation would lose the enormous financial sums currently injected into the local economy by the Ministry of Defence, alongside the lucrative civil service contracts currently awarded to Scottish businesses.

The Rt Hon the Lord Redwood D.Phil FCSI gave us his final comments

“The SNP have never wanted proper independence. They envisage Scotland joining the EU, so many of their laws would be imposed from Brussels. They would willingly pay the extra taxes and charges the EU requires of members. They would put up prices by accepting tariffs on a wide range of imports from outside the EU that are tariff-free in the UK, post-Brexit.

“Would membership be available on acceptable terms? Presumably they would need to slash public spending to cut borrowing to the lower levels the EU demands. They most likely would need to prepare for eventual joining of the Euro. Many think the Euro comes with what they call austerity economics and limiting borrowing.

“Worse still the SNP wants to spend the early years after exit using the pound as its currency and throwing out UK defence forces and defence installations for the nuclear submarines.

“It would no longer have a voice at the Bank of England when interest rates were changed and decisions made on the availability of money and bank loans in Scotland. It would need to find money to establish its own armed forces whilst losing the UK defence activity and spending.

“As Facts4EU shows, there are plenty of good reasons why so called independence would be a bad deal.”

Observations

This report was prefaced with "7 killer blows for Scottish independence". As Scottish people read through the information, it becomes increasingly more difficult to see it any other way. It's time this Scottish nationalists' obsession were relegated back where it belongs. The simple fact is that Scotland is much better off remaining as part of the United Kingdom.

Aside from all other arguments, there is the simple one that the referendum which the Scottish government was granted was described by the First Minister himself as a "once in a generation vote". If the SNP believe in democracy, they should honour that pledge.

Finally, isn't it time after nearly 50 years that the 'Barnettt formula', designed to last for only one year, was consigned to history?
