Following on from our Saturday “war footing” special yesterday, below we provide the PM’s full speech to the Munich Security Conference. In short, he uses the need for all countries in Europe to become more serious about increasing their defensive capabilities with a bizarre message about the need for the UK to rejoin the EU.

He seems to be saying “to prevent WWIII, the UK must rejoin the Single Market”. Naturally it is not put in those terms, but nevertheless it must have been rather odd for many of the delegates in the hall who came from all over the world.

The weird speech

Sir Keir and his scriptwriters seem to have forgotten who Sir Keir was speaking to, and what the principal subject of the Conference actually is. It was as though he is softening up the ground for when he returns home and moves much closer to ripping up one of his manifesto commitments on the basis of “national security”.

As with yesterday’s urgent article, Facts4EU is deviating from pure facts in this report. We do so because we can see what is coming and believe there is now an urgent need to start arming ourselves for a major fightback.

When you listen to what follows, here’s something to remember. The EU needs the UK’s defence capabilities – diminished as they now are – FAR more than the UK needs the EU’s. If you don’t believe us, here is an excerpt from Sir Keir’s speech:

A) * 1) The EU does not have a truly democratic system.
B) They need the UK defence systems but want the the UK to pay them a contribution in the range of about €4 billion – €6.5 billion to do so!
C) "... she said that advancing an ambitious partnership" After beating the UK over the head with petty regulation after Brexit.
D) "...an ambitious partnership is in their shared interest." Really? To become another European vassal state ?
E) To Rejoin the collapsed Schengen area? Yes - the Schengen agreement that the EU beat the UK over the head with after Brexit.
F) So now the EU wants their "Unflinching ally and friend" back ? You would never believe that bearing in mind Junker's" This is not an amicable divorce" and Tusk's 'Cherry picking' comments - amongst others.
G) VDL said "that advancing an ambitious partnership is in their shared interest." Now the EU's head is on the block, in so many ways - little doubt.

Lastly: Why does the UK (or any other nation) need another level of corruption and malfeasance above that which the UK has already?

Trump has quite rightly pushed for increases in spending on defense by NATO countries (allies with Trump has some uncertainty). Part of Trump’s reason is that the USA will be the biggest supplier of defense equipment to NATO countries, America first!

This is also a massive opportunity for UK defence companies, the UK has the largest defence industry in Europe. Will go some way to offset the economic damage of Brexit. Closer ties with the EU is partly what Labour
were elected on.

For instance, SIPRI data from 2020–2024 positions France as Europe's top exporter and the world's second-largest globally. Although the UK has historically been a strong exporter—often leading Europe in earlier periods—recent trends favor France, particularly in high-end systems such as Rafale aircraft and advanced naval vessels.
Older data (before the 2024 surge) sometimes highlighted the UK as having the largest single defence company (BAE Systems) or significant export shares. However, the post-Ukraine rearmament has boosted continental players like Rheinmetall in Germany, which has seen rapid growth in land systems, as well as French firms.
In summary, while the UK boasts one of Europe's most capable, innovative, and export-oriented defence industries—with BAE Systems being a global heavyweight—France surpasses it in critical metrics such as top company revenues within EU rankings and recent export leadership. Germany, driven by Rheinmetall's expansion, and Italy, via Leonardo, are also significant contenders. The European defence industry is becoming increasingly interconnected and collaborative.
Moreover, it’s important to note that European countries heavily rely on US technology for their weapons production. Building missiles, firing tank shells, and using modern targeting technology for artillery rounds often depend on American advancements. Even the guiding systems on European naval ships frequently incorporate US technology.
