Sir John cuts through government policies which “are not what the public wants or voted for”

In this next piece as part of the new ‘Stand for Our Sovereignty’ (SOS) campaign, the Rt Hon Sir John Redwood applies his usual cutting analysis to the challenges to the UK’s sovereignty we are seeing with increasing regularity under the current government.

He takes us through the costs to the concepts and lead us to the linkage between democracy and sovereignty. This is a subject we shall return to in a future article by the veteran campaigner, Sir Bill Cash. Firstly, though, here is Sir John.

Giving away more to foreigners

This government loves giving away money and assets to foreign governments. They love taxing us to fund this largesse.

They gave away Chagos, unless Parliament and the lawyers wake up and find a way to stop this act of self harm. They gave a big dowry to Mauritius on top. This dowry is so big that Mauritius can cut income tax dramatically whilst the British public pay more. Unsurprisingly we have China applauding Mauritius whilst the PM wrongly claims that China was against the deal!

Meanwhile the situation on our south coast worsens all the time. The UK government has given £500 m to France to control the small boats, only to see the number of boats and illegal migrants surge to record levels.

Then we have the offer of money to be given to the European Union under the agreements made by the Prime Minister at his ‘Reset Summit’, which will have the effect of putting us all back under their laws, which most of us do not want. He has offered money without pinning down any advantages for the UK, with just a promise of more talks.

You do not have to pay them money to get talks or to buy their exports.

On Wednesday 11 June, a day dominated by media coverage of the Chancellor's 3-year spending Statement David Lammy tried to slip out his latest gift to the EU and Spain. He has offered Spain and the EU the right to run our borders in Gibraltar with their armed police on our sovereign territory with its key naval and air base. The Spanish PM is over the moon. He has what he wants while at the same time retaining his claim to take over Gibraltar as a whole, against international law and the views of Gibraltarians.

Then there are the endless rising payments to house thousands of illegal migrants in hotels or in multiple occupation houses in our communities, because the government has failed to implement its promise to smash the gangs.

Why is this government always against us? It is the government of international lawyers, by international lawyers, for international lawyers. The policies they are pursuing are not what the public wants or voted for. They undermine our sovereignty, which seems to be an alien concept to them. They are tearing up the intent of the Brexit vote instead of using the bedrock of sovereignty to build a prosperous future for all.

When we voted for Brexit we voted to control our own borders and to keep our own sovereign territory, not to give them away. We voted to keep our own money, not to raise more tax on us to send to foreign governments. When we voted for Brexit we voted for far fewer migrants to ease our shortages of homes, doctors appointments and infrastructure, not to allow far more. We did not vote for more anti-enterprise, innovation sapping laws from Brussels, but for freedom to grow and trade with the wider world.

I strongly support this campaign to ‘Stand for Our Sovereignty’.

Discussions over Chagos started in Nov 22 when Liz Truss was asked by Boris Johnson to do so. It was Johnson and Truss that set this in motion and conveniently left it for others. Where was John Redwood at the time.

Gibraltar is a mess caused by Brexit and another issue the Cons left for others to clear up.

Brexit was voted for because of migration. Where was John Redwood in 2023 when 1.2 million migrated to the UK.

Vote Leave web site states: “We will build a new European institutional architecture.” “We will negotiate a new UK-EU Treaty.” “We do not necessarily have to use Article 50.” In 2024 the current Govt were voted into power with a EU Reset as part of their manifesto. And voted into power because people wanted the Govt Johnson, Redwood and the ERG had hijacked on the back of the referendum.

As you well know 'Sparkles' 'Leave ' won the EU referendum. As you equally well know Parliament and the establishment were horrified that the plebs had decided enough was enough. We wanted the EU interference in our lives to end. We wanted a return to national sovereignty.
The Remainiac establishment were not going to have that. They have done everything they can to stymie 'Leave' They have never implemented Brexit. Now with the rabid u-turner in charge he has four more years to wheedle us back in and he ain't going to waste the opportunity.
You're a big fan of the EU we know. It seems your a big fan of Labour. Where in their manifesto did it say 'we'll pay billions to Mauritius to give them the Chagos islands' 'Where in their manifesto didi it say 'the first task we'll undertake is to remove the Winter Heating Allowance from everyone'
Do you actually believe a word of their manifesto. Do you actually believe a word that comes out of Starmer's mouth.

Last week the Spanish PM made a televised press conference in Madrid to apologise for the latest corruption scandal in his Socialist Workers Party. The minister in charge of the police has been accused of taking payments, the week before this the minister for transport's home was raided because of allegations of links with organised crime and one of the party's senior advisors is also linked to this. The PM made this tv press conference because the evidence is very strong and the crimes are very serious. The Socialist Workers Party in Spain is a minority Government and there have been large public protests demanding they resign.

It's astonishing that the Labour party are so keen to do deals with a Government like this which has little public support in Spain.

As usual you are just moaning that nothing is possible with your normal defeatist attitude. Your insistence that all problems are as a result of Brexit and not due to Government sleazy behaviour and incompetence are not based on any factual information. Many ex-conservative MP's are now complaining that nobody will employ them. If the Labour party continue to ignore the British people they will go the same way. New political parties are emerging and UK politics will change. I agree that it will take time and a great deal of damage will be created before we take back control, but it is happening and will happen. Since we left the EU it's experienced crisis after crisis with no visible solutions, it's definitely not an attractive option.

Well done, John Redwood! It's great to hear from such fresh and interesting new voices. And you promise us Bill Cash to come, what joy! To me, it's amazing that you struggle to find anyone under the age of 40 who thinks leaving the EU was a good idea, but I'm sure bringing the likes of Redwood and Cash to the table will be a game-changer.

In 2024, 2% of the UK's GNI would be over £50 Billion.
