UK visas to Ukrainians now exceed ¼m - France has taken in just 65,000

Facts4EU.Org looks at the mass displacement of millions of Ukrainians

The latest figures on displaced persons due to Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine show that the UK is taking its fair share, considering the geography involved. The distance from Kyiv to London is nearly 2,500km.

Overall, more than 4.5m people have semi-permanently fled Ukraine since the start of the latest invasion by Putin’s Russia. In reality more than that number evacuated but many tens of thousands returned to fight.

It is natural that countries bordering or very close to Ukraine will have received far more refugees from the conflict.

The UK versus France

With the UK being so distant it is remarkable that we have now issued more than a quarter of a million (254,300) visas to Ukrainian nationals, according to Home Office figures released last week.

This compares to France which has only welcomed in 61,580, as at the end of February 2024.

France and the UK have comparable populations so it is fair to compare the numbers of Ukrainians in each country.

In the EU overall

Ukraine has four borders with EU countries : Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania. Naturally the Ukrainian disapora had already extended into these countries even before Putin’s war, as well as significant presences in other major countries such as Germany.

This helps to explain the disproportionate level of the Ukrainian presence of ‘temporary protection’ residents currently in the EU, numbering 4.3 million in February.

Observations

Naturally it is important to recognise the different methods of counting in different countries. Nevertheless the numbers of Ukrainian refugees in the UK compared to France must be questioned.

With comparable populations it might be expected that each country’s numbers might be broadly equivalent, but no. The UK has taken in over four times as many as France.
