Facts4EU looks at the meeting in Italy of the world’s major western powers, including the UK
On Thursday (13 Jun 2024) the leaders of the world’s seven most important western powers started gathering in the beautiful Borgo Egnazia in Apulia Italy, for a G7 Summit from June 13-15, 2024. The event brings together the Presidents and Prime Ministers of these countries – the US, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Japan and Canada, as well as (bizarrely) the President of the EU Council and the President of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
Italy currently holds the presidency of the G7, which puts the ‘Golden Girl of the Right’ in the EU on centre stage. Italy’s PM - Giorgia Meloni - was the only one whose party triumphed in the EU Parliamentary elections held on 06-09 June.
Before setting off from Rome yesterday, the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said: "I'm proud that we are heading to the G7 and to Europe with the strongest government of all."
Who is Giorgia Meloni?
Described by the BBC as "far-right", we countered our state broadcaster's narrative back in 2022 and have been proved right. She won power as we predicted and there is nothing in her government's policies which could be described as "far-right". Here is part of what we published back then.
It’s 2019 and you are at a political rally in Rome. Onto the stage explodes a small bundle of Italian dinamite… “I am Giorgia, I am a woman, I am a mother, I am Italian, I am Christian.” Italy’s new PM-in-waiting, described herself in these simple but forceful terms.
In so doing, she covered a number of her beliefs. She’s a woman (no ‘non-binary genders’ for her). She’s a mother to one daughter (she believes in family values). She’s Italian (she believes in the identity of the nation state, not the EU superstate). Finally, she’s Christian (none of that ‘multi-faith’ stuff for her).
So powerful was this simple message it inspired an anti-Giorgia dance song which sampled her speech and then backfired by becoming hugely popular among her supporters. It’s worth a listen, to understand the Meloni fenomeno.
This video went viral and has been viewed over 13 million times.
The contrast with France and Germany
Immediately following those EU elections, President Macron of France was forced to dissolve his French government and call a snap election. Chancellor Scholz of Germany was humiliated by the right-wing AfD and is now fighting for his political career.
We suspect the British PM Rishi Sunak must be thinking there are worse places to be than sunny Apulia in the middle of a difficult UK general election campaign, given his lacklustre performance on British television so far…

What is being discussed at the G7?
In addition to many ‘side events’ and ‘bilateral discussions’ here are the main topics.

Observations
A cursory glance at the agenda above might lead some readers to question whether these global leaders and their governments really understand the concerns of ordinary people in the countries the leaders represent.
The everyday concerns of most people – high energy prices, the cost of Net Zero, the cost of living, the lack of housing and medical services, the problems with the integration of millions of migrants, and the specific security threats from Iran, Russia, China and North Korea – these are not mentioned. Nor is the growing disconnect between the political classes and their electorates.
The one positive is that migration is the first topic for discussion on Day Two, and credit must probably go to Giorgia Meloni for this.
With all the lunches, dinners and sightseeing that are in the full programme, it must be questioned just how much value these summits really have. One thing we can guarantee is there will be no shortage of photos provided to media outlets.
We must get reports like this out there
Reports like the one above take far longer to research, write and produce than many people realise. If they were easy, readers would see other organisations also producing these daily. However, there’s little point in the Facts4EU.Org team working long hours, seven days-a-week, if we lack the resources to promote them effectively – to the public, to MPs, and to the media.
