Can the EU - and the UK - take another five years of the German Ice Queen?

In Part I of this two-part Facts4EU.Org report we look at news from Berlin affecting the UK which has mostly gone unnoticed. On Monday (19 Feb 2024) The German CDU party held a press conference in Berlin. In it they announced that EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will be their top candidate for the EU Commission ‘elections’ this year.

It is inevitable that Ursula von der Leyen will now be with us until 2029. Thanks to Brexit we will not have to endure the worst of it, but the EU27 are our neighbours so it does matter to the United Kingdom. It also matters because it is this woman who has led the team punishing the British people for voting to leave the EU's empire. On top of this we already have the Conservative government of Rishi Sunak drawing us closer in to the EU with more alignment. Under Sir Keir Starmer this will only get much worse.

Frau von der Leyen has in effect announced she will continue as EU Commission President for another five years. Below we present our ‘takeaways’ from the press conference and subsequent statements from Berlin.

Ursula von der Leyen's reign

As unelected EU Commission President Frau von der Leyen has enormous powers
In 2019 she was parachuted in by Angela Merkel as a last-minute choice
She has ruled since 2019
She has now announced she would like to continue (no surprise there)
She will undoubtedly be chosen to continue in her role for another 5 years

Here is what her German party – the CDU – said on Monday

“Ursula von der Leyen is to become the EPP top candidate for the European Commission in the European elections. The board of the CDU has unanimously nominated her as a candidate for the party congress of the European People's Party.”
“The fact that the EU has stayed together in very difficult times is the great merit of the EU Commission and Ursula von der Leyen.”

And here was Ursula von der Leyen’s response

“I came on in 2019 because I firmly believe in Europe. For me, Europe is home to me – just like Lower Saxony. My candidacy 2024 is a very conscious decision. I am very grateful to the CDU for proposing me.”

She then went on to lie:

“Europe has acted immediately. And we have stood behind Ukraine from day one. We have withstood. We have passed the biggest energy giant in 40 years. And we have made Europe more independent.”

This is patently untrue. To be factual, the EU did nothing in 2014 when Putin invaded Crimea. It was the British that took action and assisted Ukraine. When Putin invaded the eastern part of Ukraine in 2022 the EU again did nothing. The British were the first to act.

"What Europe has been all about has made Europe apart from day one. That is democracy. And these are our values. Our appeal is so great that many others want to join in.”

What she means is that the “many others” who want to join the EU each want the billions they will receive from the EU if they sign up.

The EU will claim after the May elections that Ursula von der Leyen has been ‘elected’

It should be noted that unlike in the US, where all registered voters are able to vote for their choice as US President, Ursula von der Leyen will be elected by a small percentage of German voters, for just one German political party.

The rest of the EU’s citizens – in their hundreds of millions - will be excluded from this vote. Below is what we wrote about this previously.

Frau von der Leyen was a last-minute compromise candidate for Commission President when the 27 EU leaders could not agree on anyone else and time had run out. She was then put forward to the EU Parliament in July 2019.

Politburo politics?

British people are accustomed to elections involving more than one candidate. This is not the case when it comes to electing EU Commissioners.

Frau von der Leyen was the only candidate on the ballot paper – exactly as Jean-Claude Juncker was the only candidate for EU Commission President back in 2014.

In November 2019 in Strasbourg the EU Parliament approved the other 26 candidates making up the EU Commission. The vote was on the EU Commission as a bloc. Over previous weeks some of the MEPs had been able to question the candidates for each role in the Commission. However at the 'election' the EU's 'elected representatives' were presented with just one candidate for each role. There were no alternative candidates to vote for.

Observations

Five more years of this woman seem now to be inevitable. She was shoe-horned into the Commission as its President in 2019, thereby tearing up the democratic procedures which had been agreed with the EU Parliament. So much for the EU's "rule of law". This time she will re-enter triumphantly, claiming a democratic legitimacy which she will not have.

In Part II of this two-part Facts4EU.Org report we will look at some examples of von der Leyen's record. Specifically we will give an example of the way she has punished the British people for having voted to leave her sclerotic EU empire, as well as looking at her record both before she became EU Commission President and her record since gaining office.

The EU is her religion, She will do anything asked of her to support the failing Corrupt system.
I see a wholly untrustworthy woman at the head of a wholly untrustworthy organisation.
The Eu's top table is stuffed full of people just like her, How else do they manage to keep the abomination going.
UK officials who side with them are cut from the same cloth.

Meanwhile, in the UK we have a Govt that nobody wants and we have to wait for them to allow the country to go to the polls when effectively we will have a binary choice, an unelected HoL’s and all supported by a massive company civil service.

Meanwhile in the UK, the Guardian reports that, “Food businesses sending products to the EU have had to fork out an extra £170m in export costs because of Brexit red tape, with the changes described as being “catastrophic” for some exporters“. “£58 in the last 12 months, the extra costs have resulted in a sharp fall in exports, particularly among smaller producers, with the value of meat products sent to the EU down by 17% since 2019.

Yes I agree the House of Lords is an appalling waste of taxpayers' money and ought to be abolished.
New Zealand got rid of its "Upper House" in 1951 and has managed happily with a unicameral
system ever since.
But this has got nothing to do with the continued appointment of Ursula von der Leyen for another five years.
It is this Tory goverrnment, ever since Cameron's resignation and then May's dreadful Withdrawal Agreement, that has been
acting like a petulant child, refusing to accept the democratic decision of the Referendum, saying "I'm not playing anymore" and determined to ignore the wishes of the people and rejoin the EU by stealth.
