Another reminder to the anti-British, anti-Brexit (probable) new PM of Poland

The UK’s support for Poland : Its people and its trade

In our report yesterday we reported on the election results in Poland, which proved to be a surprise disappointment for the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party.

With the arch-europhile and anti-Brexit Donald Tusk now heading for power, in Part II of this report we demonstrate how well Poland has done from the UK in terms of huge numbers of Polish people flooding to live and work in the UK, as well as the benefits to Poland of selling to the UK market.

Part III – How the UK has propped up Poland for decades

Hosting Polish people in the UK

Given that Poland was suffering a high unemployment rate during most of the time since it joined the EU – in particular amongst its young people – it can safely be said that the UK reduced Poland’s overall unemployment considerably.

In its latest figures published in August 2023, (over two years after the UK exited the EU), the Home Office stated that 1.2 million Poles had applied for ‘settled status’ in the UK. This is the second-highest number for non-UK nationals in the country. We will be publishing a full report on this “EU Settlement Scheme” shortly.

Funding Polish industry – Imports of goods

When it comes to trade, Poland has done very well out of the UK, as indeed have many other EU countries.

Below are the latest figures from the Polish government for exports and imports to and from the United Kingdom. As can be seen, Poland has been enjoying a very healthy surplus.

Brexit Facts4EU.Org Summary

Poland’s exports and imports of goods from/to the UK

2. For Polish imports from the UK it’s a different story

The UK does not even feature in the Polish government’s Top 10. Poland buys more from Germany, China, the US, and even South Korea than it does from the UK.

  2. China : 141.0
  3. Italy : 49.5
  4. United States : 44.7

  10. Norway : 23.0

Coming tomorrow – How the UK has subsidised and supported Poland

In Part III tomorrow we will reveal just how much Poland has been subsidised by the EU, with a significant amount of this money coming from the United Kingdom.

We will also show how Poland has relied on the UK for defence.

Observations

As Poland’s fourth most important export market, it would seem obvious that Mr Tusk should keep his lips sealed when tempted to talk about Brexit or the UK in general. Based on past performance, however, we doubt he will do this.

We should stress that the figures we have published are from the first eight months of THIS year, long after Brexit.

“Who loves ya, Baby?”

When it comes to the EU’s much-lauded ‘Freedom of Movement’, this was barely used by the British. Conversely many former East European countries used it like there was no tomorrow to come to the UK.

More than three times as many Poles used this to move to the UK as Brits going to all the EU27 countries combined, to say nothing of the 1.5 million Romanians and others. This will be the subject of a Facts4EU.Org report in the coming days.
