We lift the lid on GDP growth in Brexit Britain, using official facts

Last week the ONS released its latest GDP figures, showing the performance of the UK economy up to Q1 (Jan-Mar) 2023. In the last 10 years GDP has grown by 15%. It has grown by 6% since we voted to leave the EU.

Our analysis compares the UK’s economy with that of the EU’s economic powerhouse: Germany. The results are likely to shock many readers – in a positive way. We have produced this report for CIBUK.Org, of which we are an Affiliated Organisation, as well as being their main 'facts engine'.

What follows shows growth percentages in real terms (‘chained volume measure’) and our sources are the latest sets of data from the ONS and from the EU Commission. It doesn’t get more official than that.

Actual official data, not ‘forecasts’

What follows are not the ‘forecasts’ used by Remainer-Rejoiners. These are actual results from the UK’s official data agency: the Office for National Statistics, and from Eurostat. These figures are used by financial organisations all around the world.

Comments on our report, by former Brexit Minister the Rt Hon David Jones MP

"For years we were told by Remain supporters that Brexit would be economically disastrous for the UK and we would swiftly fall behind the EU if we left.

"This analysis - based upon official statistics - shows that the opposite is true. The UK economy has been remarkably resilient in the face of Covid and Russian aggression in Ukraine, and has outstripped that of Germany, the leading continental economy.

"It's now time for Remainers to come to terms with Brexit and acknowledge that our new freedoms as an independent country are helping the UK to grow faster than our EU neighbours. Brexit has been good for Britain, and the best is yet to come."

- The Rt Hon David Jones MP, 16 May 2023

UK economic growth - higher than Germany’s in last 10 years and since EU Referendum

From the summary above it can be seen that the United Kingdom has significantly outperformed Germany in economic growth over the last 10 years. Not only that, but the UK has also outperformed Germany in economic growth terms since the EU Referendum.

And when it comes to the most recent quarter’s results (Jan-Mar 2023) the UK’s growth was higher (0.1%) than Germany’s (0.0%).

Let’s face it, you won’t see news like this on the BBC.

Finally, the UK economy is now back above its pre-pandemic levels

In its report last week, the ONS stated the following:-

“Monthly GDP is now estimated to be 0.1% above its pre-coronavirus (COVID-19) levels (February 2020).”

- Office for National Statistics (ONS), 12 May 2023

Observations

Uplifting report

How many readers would have guessed the UK’s economy outperformed the EU’s economic powerhouse over the last 10 years, outperformed it since the EU Referendum, and even outperformed it in the last quarter?

The reason we compared the UK's economic growth figures with Germany's is of course because Germany is the UK's major competitor in Europe, as well as being the EU's No.1 economy by a long way.

This news will not of course go down well at Remainer-Rejoiner Central. They will doubtless try to discredit us as usual and to deflect onto other topics. The problem they have is that our analysis of the official facts shows clearly that the UK has outgrown Germany. No-one can argue with the time periods we chose, as they are perfectly logical ones to look at – a 10-year overview, then the view since we voted to leave, then the first three months of this year.

Economic growth is precarious in many countries

Readers will be well aware there is concern amongst economists about a worldwide recession looming. There can be no complacency in the UK’s growth figures because of this. Nevertheless we hope that our analysis of the numbers will have proved interesting to readers.

Finally, we feel compelled to ask why it falls to a small, underfunded think-tank like ours to do this analysis, with its revealing and surprising results. Did no-one else take the trouble to analyse the figures released last week?

Today we have published yet more great news for Brexit Britain, but we predict you’ll never see this on most media outlets. If any impartial journalists reading this would like to run on our report, please get in touch here.
