56,000 applications per month since the deadline passed in 2021

An astonishing 7.2 million applications have been made for settled status in the United Kingdom by EU and EEA nationals. This is as a result of Theresa May’s disastrous Withdrawal Agreement with the EU.

Below we break down the shocking numbers and ask why on earth the Home Office is still accepting 56,000 applications per month from EU nationals, two years after the deadline passed?

As of 31 March 2023, over 7.2 million (7,221,650) applications had been received
89% received in England, 5% in Scotland, 2% in Wales and 2% in Northern Ireland
Of the 7.2 million applications, 91% (6.6 million) were from EEA nationals
Highest number from Romanian (1,479,460), Polish (1,191,690) and Italian (629,190) nationals
1,169,760 applications received from 1 July 2021 to 31 March 2023 (after the deadline)
Of those, 302,180 were from joining family members and 10,740 were derivative rights applications

56,000 applications per month still being accepted

Applications concluded

7.1 million (7,054,720) applications had been concluded up to 31 March 2023
Of these, 50% (3,501,060) were granted settled status
39% (2,737,960) were granted pre-settled status
11% had other outcomes (including 511,960 refused applications, 162,550 withdrawn or void applications, and 141,190 invalid applications)
For applications received from 1 July 2021 (after the deadline) to 31 March 2023, 1,025,140 were concluded
Of those, 379,990 were concluded late applications, 370,110 were concluded repeat applications
265,160 were concluded joining family member applications and 9,880 were concluded “derivative rights” applications

Repeat applicants

Of the 7.2 million applications made up to 31 March 2023, an estimated 6.1 million people have applied to the scheme, of which 5.6 million people had obtained a grant of status
Romanian nationals accounted for the highest number of repeat applicants to the scheme (280,610, 29%)
88% of repeat applicants have received a grant of status (settled or pre-settled status)
As of 31 March 2023, just over a quarter (142,650, 26%) of those moving from pre-settled to settled status were Romanian nationals

Observations

Over 6 million from the EU want to live in Brexit Britain

Readers will recall our reports over the years, calling out the Remainers’ claims that “only” three million EU citizens had taken advantage of “Freedom of Movement” and moved to the United Kingdom. We ridiculed these numbers and we have been proved right.

The simple fact is that the UK’s population has risen by around 10% due to the EU’s freedom of movement rules and yet the UK’s housing stock, schools, hospitals, GPs’ surgeries, roads, and social services have not.

EU immigration is so high because dag politicians in the Tory Party want to reverse Brexit. Rejoinerism isn't just a political decision: it's an obsession, a religion, a mind disease - they are like little children throwing a tantrum, because they can't get what they want.

The sad thing is nobody seems to know what the the true immigration figures are. I would have thought that it would be easy to have a compulsory registration system, this is essential so they can manage and finance services but for some reason they do not do this.

The ONS dismissed the 6million figure saying these were applications and not the number of people who stayed. They cite the "Annual Population Survey" and the "Rapid database" (Registration and Population Database) but this does not give them the information they need. They seem to believe the 6m figure was actually 3.5 million but they admit this is an estimate. It seems that we now need to add 1.2 million late applications to this.

Others have quoted the census data from March 2021. This gave a figure of 3.9 million EU passport holders including 365,000 Irish nationals. At the same time there were 5.5 million applications. Obviously this assumes every EU citizen completed the census. As many live in shared accommodation and regularly move I doubt this is the case. Some people claim repeat application are duplicated in the official numbers and leavers are not included.

The government should take control of this issue and produce accurate information, or maybe they do not want people to know the truth.

NH (3) Yes some of the applications are repeat applications, so the number of people is less than 7.2 million.
Presumably also, the 365,000 Irish don't need to apply.
I don't think this derails the overall message though.

The actual number of application requests is much less relevant that the number of approved applications. The number of approved settled and pre-settled status means that 5.6 million EU citizens have maintained the Freedom of Movement after Brexit. This does not automatically mean that these 5.6 million EU citizens currently live in the UK: they can spend up to 5 years in a row outside the UK without losing their status. The Census records seem to indicate that only 70% of settled status holders actually live in the UK.

LuxuryBalloon (5) your comment brings me round to a question that has occurred to me after watching the Martin Lewis show last week.
We can buy extra National Insurance years going back to 2012, as a special offer because normally you can only buy years from the preceding six.
The deadline has been extended to April 2025 because of the demand.
As an investment this is hard to beat, because for £824 you get 1/35th of a UK new state pension, which of course is triple-locked. Payback time is about 3 years.
My question is, do we think non-resident EU persons with settled status (and an NI number of course) can purchase these NI contribution years and thus benefit from our triple locked pension in the future ?

I agree entirely that this is a very serious message. The deadline should be the deadline !
My point is that the people that are employed to collect this data seem to be clueless. The difference between the recorded figure and what they estimate to be correct is over 70%, they are not even close.

If an advertisement contains false information they can be reported to the advertising standards authority and be forced to correct the error. At the same time we have journalists and politicians, using the same media channels, constantly presenting false facts about Brexit and the UK economy. We should have a similar regulatory authority to control this. To do this we need accurate unambiguous data.

Pre-Brexit, EU nationals were roaming back & forth with such ease that not many sought to permanently move here.
Brexit forced on those, who would otherwise come & go, the decision to seek settled status. EU to UK immigration was never this high. So what caused it?
This can only be due to Brexit. The type of imported worker now is typically from further afield & therefore more likely to arrive with an intent to stay for the long term or forever.
Not only did Brexit create these stats - this was predicted, so it's not shocking.
