Facts4EU looks at our democratic choices in 2024

Already we know that at least 82 sitting MPs are standing down at the next general election, in 2024. This looks likely to become a record rout, as many have still not yet confirmed.

Facts4EU crunches the numbers and lists those MPs who have already decided not to stand at the next election. We will ask some questions about the future quality of our elected representatives as well as looking at the value of your vote – if you decide to cast one – next year.

A Brexit Facts4EU.Org 3-Part Series

Part IThe ‘nearly departed’ (This report)
Part II - Some Scottish votes are worth up to 3.5 times more than English ones
Part III – Party democracy – ensuring voters are truly represented by candidates

1. Parliament – The nearly departed

  • 82 sitting MPs have already announced they are standing down at the next election
  • This is almost one in eight of all sitting MPs in the House of Commons
  • 55 of these are (or were) Conservatives
  • 16 are (or were) Labour
  • 9 are SNP
  • 1 is Green
  • 1 is Plaid Cymru

Note: Six of the above are now technically 'independent' MPs who have lost or resigned the whip. Our numbers above include them in party totals as these were the parties they stood for when elected.

Is your MP going?

At the bottom of this report we list all those MPs we are aware of – and the constituencies they represent - who have confirmed they will not stand at the general election next year. If readers can help us to keep this list up-to-date we would be most grateful ! You can let us know here.

Your vote has a different weight, depending on where you live

2. The United Kingdom – the number of voters in its constituent parts

As by far the largest component of the United Kingdom, England sometimes seems to be overlooked. Scotland has its parliament in Holyrood. Wales has its Senedd in Cardiff and Northern Ireland has its Assembly in Belfast (when it's standing).

England has nothing. There is no democratic body representing the English as a whole.

  • England : 38,822,827 - 83.5%
  • Scotland : 4,012,718 - 8.6%
  • Wales : 2,304,723 - 5.0%
  • Northern Ireland : 1,337,369 - 2.9%
  • TOTAL : 46,477,637

3. The disenfranchisement of English voters

There is an imbalance in the number of English MPs compared to the numbers from other parts of the United Kingdom. In our chart below we show what should be the number of MPs for each part of the UK, compared to the reality today.

  • England : +10
  • Scotland : -3
  • Wales : -8
  • Northern Ireland : 1

In Part II of this series we ask why some Scottish votes are worth 3.5 times the value of English votes.

Observations

Who would be an MP these days?

If we want a healthy and vibrant democracy it is essential that we attract the brightest and the best to put themselves up to the electorate as candidates for our votes. Unfortunately in this world of the 24/7 social media commentariat, life as an MP can be a dispiriting – not to say hazardous – one.

MPs do not sign up for combat duty, yet sadly in the last seven years we have lost two MPs to murder. In 2016 Labour’s Jo Cox was killed, followed by the Conservative’s Sir David Amess in 2021 who was killed by an Islamist extremist. Both were stabbed multiple times in their constituency offices. On Christmas Eve this year (2023) the office of Mike Freer, MP for Finchley and Golders Green, was the subject of a suspected arson attack. He has subsequently said he received an email telling him that he deserved to burn alive.

In addition to the mortal dangers there is also the daily vitriol heaped on MPs by generally ignorant people. This may not directly represent a threat to life but it must be galling, even if the MPs have staffers to sift through the garbage in order to ensure genuine voters’ concerns are read with care.

Brexit Facts4EU.Org is fortunate in having relationships with a number of MPs who represent the very best of Britain. One such (who is sadly standing down) will be highlighted by our Chairman in the next report. Our concern is that so many able people will be put off the idea of becoming MPs by our overall social climate. If this happens, all of our lives will be the poorer for it.

We also hope to shine a light on the imperative of ensuring those approved by the party machines are indeed people who represent the views of the members of each party.

Reports like the one above take far longer to research, write and produce than many people realise. If they were easy, readers would see other organisations also producing these daily. However, there’s little point in the Facts4EU.Org team working long hours, seven days-a-week, if we lack the resources to promote them effectively – to the public, to MPs, and to the media. This is where you come in, dear reader.

Facts4EU.Org needs you today

We are a 'not for profit' team (we make a loss) and any payment goes towards the actual work, not plush London offices, lunch or taxi expenses, or other luxuries of some organisations.

We badly need more of our thousands of readers to become members, to support this work. Could this be you, today? It's quick and easy, we give you a choice of two highly secure payment providers, and we do NOT ask you for further support if you pay once. We just hope you keep supporting us. Your membership stays anonymous unless you tell us otherwise.

Please don't assume that other people will keep us going - we don't receive enough to survive and we need your help today. Could you help us? We rely 100% on public contributions from readers like you.
