“I am Giorgia, I am a woman, I am a mother, I am Italian, I am Christian”

“Far right”? “Neo-fascist”?
In a Facts4EU.Org portrait we ask: “What’s all this Meloni?”

It’s 2019 and you are at a political rally in Rome. Onto the stage explodes a small bundle of Italian dinamite… “I am Giorgia, I am a woman, I am a mother, I am Italian, I am Christian.” Italy’s new PM-in-waiting, described herself in these simple but forceful terms.

In so doing, she covered a number of her beliefs. She’s a woman (no ‘non-binary genders’ for her). She’s a mother to one daughter (she believes in family values). She’s Italian (she believes in the identity of the nation state, not the EU superstate). Finally, she’s Christian (none of that ‘multi-faith’ stuff for her).

So powerful was this simple message it inspired a dance song which sampled her speech. It’s worth a listen, to understand the Meloni fenomeno.

This video went viral and has been viewed over 12 million times.

Giorgia in English, in her own words

In August, Giorgia Meloni recorded a video message in three languages in response to what she and her party see as the false accusations from the west’s left-leaning media. She also dismissed as "nonsense" claims that she would head an authoritarian government. We present the evidence and let readers make up their own minds.

"We fiercely oppose any anti-democratic drift with words of firmness that we do not always find in the Italian and European left."

"The Italian right has handed fascism over to history for decades now, unambiguously condemning the suppression of democracy and the ignominious anti-Jewish laws."

“Far right”? “Neo-fascist”? This woman is head of the mainstream and EU-wide European Conservatives and Reformists Party

The fledglings from the nests of the UK’s schools of ‘journalism’ seem to be trained to believe that anyone to the right of Karl Marx must automatically be ‘far right’. If they are vaguely attractive, some of these young things are soon grabbed by TV stations and allowed to pontificate to camera, rather than report.

Where are the years of apprenticeship, covering council meetings on rainy Tuesday nights, and writing up ‘Cat lost in tree wasn’t lost at all, says Blenkinsop’s Fire Chief Bert Blastfurnace ’?

Despite Meloni being President of the EU-wide European Conservatives and Reformists Party since 2020, the BBC continues to refer to her as being “far right”.

Background and political career

Meloni was born into a working-class family in Rome in 1977. After being politically active as a teenager, she rose to become the national leader of its student body, Student Action, before being elected as councillor of the Province of Rome.

When she was young, did she say some questionable things? Yes. But then the UK’s own Prime Minister Liz Truss was a member of the LibDems when she was young. Right-wing Daily Mail commentator Peter Hitchens was a Marxist when he was young. Times move on, opinions and beliefs develop and change.

In 2006, at the age of 29, Meloni became the youngest ever vice-president of the Chamber of Deputies — Italy’s nearest equivalent to the House of Commons. Two years later, she was appointed Minister of Youth in the cabinet led by Silvio Berlusconi — the longest-serving Prime Minister of Italy.

By 2014 she had joined forces with former Minister of Defence Ignazio La Russa and anti-EU austerity politician, Guido Crosetto, to form their own party — Brothers of Italy. In March of that year she was elected party leader. Her motto continues to be: “God, family and country.”

And finally... (Oh the irony) ... The BBC might wish to consider this

Giorgia Meloni was elected by Italian voters on Sunday. Her party secured far more votes than any other party. The outgoing Prime Minister is Mario Draghi, former Goldman Sachs banker, former President of the European Central Bank, and loved by EU bureaucrats. He was never once elected, only appointed.

Observations

Do we hold a candle for Giorgia Meloni? No, Facts4EU.Org remains non-partisan and we judge by deeds not words.

Our portrait of Italy's PM-in-waiting is merely an attempt to redress some of the extremist reporting across Europe, on the BBC, and on many other media channels.

The MSM might not like Ms Meloni's political beliefs but clearly millions of Italians do. Not too dissimilar to what we have gone through since the decision to hold the EU Referendum, perhaps....
