If the UK stopped buying from the hostile EU, the continent would go into a long recession
This is Part One in a landmark set of two reports from Facts4EU.Org and CIBUK.Org
revealing some astonishing official facts about the EU’s trade with the UK
- Part One – Brexit Britain’s buying power – the EU sells the UK £1bn of goods per working day (This report)
- Part Two – The EU’s trade balance has fallen off a cliff – did no-one at the BBC notice? (Tomorrow's report)
In this two-part set of end-of-year reports Facts4EU.Org summarises the UK’s value to the EU with the latest headline numbers for the EU’s goods exports. The new trade figures from the EU Commission show the United Kingdom as the second-largest market for EU27 goods after the US.
The Rejoin campaigners have always been fond of telling the British public how meaningless and insignificant the United Kingdom is in the world – and particularly to the EU.
We bring readers the real facts – from the EU Commission itself.

The Rt Hon Sir John Redwood MP comments exclusively to Facts4EU.Org and CIBUK.Org
"As Facts4eu tells us, the EU continues to sell huge quantities of goods to the UK, around £1 bn a day.
"Instead of treating us as a valued customer they do all they can to undermine the UK’s internal market in Northern Ireland and seek to exert controls over us in a wide range of areas.
"The more they pick arguments with us the more likely UK consumers and businesses will look elsewhere for their imports, or even better make, grow and produce more for ourselves."
Former Secretary of State the Rt Hon Sir John Redwood, MP for Wokingham, 31 Dec 2022
If the UK turned firmly against the EU because of its hostile behaviour in the last six years since the EU Referendum, and adopted a government-backed “Buy British, Commonwealth and non-EU” policy, the EU would be plunged into a deep and long-lasting recession.
Observations
Rejoice, Rejoiners, just rejoice!
As 2022 draws to a close, Brexit Facts4EU.Org has analysed the latest trade figures from the EU Commission and can reveal just how wrong the Rejoiners are.
We hope this report will bring joy to their hearts in this New Year period, to see how much ‘Treasure Island’ is worth to the EU and why the EU Commission should turn over a new leaf and be a great deal friendlier to the UK in 2023.
We also hope this will gird the loins of the Prime Minister and his Cabinet colleagues in their actions to bring all the long-awaited Brexit benefits to the country.
The above charts reveal in two stark images just how important Brexit Britain is to the European Union
The UK is the second-largest export market for EU goods, ranking just behind the US (with an economy over seven times the size of the UK’s) and way ahead of China (with an economy over five times larger than the UK’s).
Brexit Britain’s growing leverage over the EU
The EU is now in conflict with the US over its protectionist trade policies being introduced by President Joe Biden. This makes Brexit Britain even more important as an export market for the EU.
If a trade war erupts with the US, as looks increasingly likely, then the EU can ill-afford to alienate its nearest and most lucrative neighbour. At the same time, China is entering a severe Covid crisis, which will doubtless impact on the EU’s ability to sell its products there. A double whammy.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak must strike now
The coming year will see still more negotiations with the EU Commission to redress some of the appalling conditions imposed on the UK under the EU’s Withdrawal Agreement, so disastrously negotiated under Theresa May’s government. Yes, Boris Johnson’s government concluded the deal, but they were dealt a very poor hand by Theresa May’s Remainer government and there was not much they could do except walk away. (Which is what Facts4EU.Org advocated at the time.)
Now is the right moment to exert pressure and demand wholesale changes. We urge the government of Rishi Sunak to stand up and fight hard for the full Brexit that more than 17 million people voted for in 2016.
On this New Year’s Eve, all we can say is that it would not be before time. And if Mr Sunak would like to go some way towards restoring his party’s fortunes in the polls, we thoroughly recommend he gets serious and acts tough with the EU Commission.
We must get reports like this out there
