Lord Frost asks EU’s permission to move products within our own country

“There is no alternative to the [NI] Protocol,” says EU Commission

Car pulls up beside old man walking along country road.
“We’re lost,” says the driver. “Could you tell us the way to a place called Sovereignty?”
Old man pauses, sucks on his pipe, slowly replies:
“Well I wouldn’t be starting from here, if I were you.”

Yesterday, 17 Jun 2021, Lord Frost wrote to the EU Commission to ask for permission to extend the ‘grace period’ for the continued shipment of chilled meat from one part of the United Kingdom to another part.

The EU Commission swiftly issued an interim statement , saying:

“The European Commission received today a request from the United Kingdom to extend a grace period concerning the movement of chilled meats from Great Britain to Northern Ireland, agreed within the context of the Protocol on Ireland / Northern Ireland.

“This grace period is due to expire on 30 June 2021. The UK has requested that it be extended to 30 September 2021. The Commission will now assess this request.

“The Commission has already indicated its openness to finding solutions in line with the Protocol. However, for that to happen, the UK must fully implement the Protocol, which is the solution found to protect the Good Friday (Belfast) Agreement, the functioning of the all-island economy, and the integrity of the EU's Single Market. There is no alternative to the Protocol.

“Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič will reach out to Lord Frost and his team to set up a meeting as soon as possible to discuss this request in detail. The Commission will also consult the European Parliament and the Council.”

Lord Frost had already raised this with the EU over months, including at last week’s formal meeting

Lord Frost and his EU counterpart Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič met with their respective teams in London on Wednesday last week, and one of the agenda items was precisely this question of the movement of chilled meats including sausages and minced meat from GB to N.I..

Extract from UK statement
on the meeting of the Withdrawal Agreement Joint Committee
09 June 2021

“The UK is concerned that substantive progress has not yet been made in many areas, notably:

  • SPS / veterinary arrangements. The UK has made a proposal which recognises the high standards of both Parties and establishes mechanisms to identify and address any risk arising from changes made on either side;
  • Arrangements further to reduce and remove burdens for trusted agri-food traders moving goods for use or consumption in Northern Ireland - for example enabling streamlined processes for highly trusted retailers with full traceability and auditability of supply chains. Here too the UK has made a proposal.
  • Prohibition on imports to Northern Ireland of fresh minced meat or other SPS commodities such as seed potatoes;
  • Pet travel from Great Britain to Northern Ireland. The UK sees no reason why Part 1 listing could not be granted by the EU, which would resolve the problems.
  • The application of tariff rate quotas (TRQs) for goods entering Northern Ireland, including on steel. As a result of EU legislative changes last year, Northern Ireland traders are currently at a unique disadvantage;
  • The criteria for the UK Trader Scheme (UKTS) and the application of the concept of “goods not at risk”.
  • Movements of goods sent from Great Britain to Northern Ireland in parcels

The above meeting was minuted by both sides but it seems that the EU Commission would not consider the UK’s request to resolve these issues until they had received a formal letter from Lord Frost. Even now they have received it, they say:

“Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič will reach out to Lord Frost and his team to set up a meeting as soon as possible to discuss this request in detail. The Commission will also consult the European Parliament and the Council.”

EU Commission statement, 17 Jun 2021

The ‘grace period’ granted by the EU for the movement of sausages and other chilled meats within two parts of the UK runs out in eight working days’ time.

Observations

Has the EU been able to produce any evidence of trouble? No, not a sausage

The EU Commission has not been able to produce one item of evidence showing that a plague of high quality British bangers have turned up illegally in the Republic of Ireland. In fact forget a plague, not even one banger. Not a sausage.

And even if a British sausage or burger did turn up in Dublin or Cork, so what? British food standards have not altered since Brexit. Indeed we would argue that in future the UK’s standards are likely to be higher than those on display in many parts of the EU. We recommend our Facts4EU.Org report on this here.

Unfortunately this is not a joke

We started today’s report with an old joke. Unfortunately the situation is rather more serious. GB suppliers and British consumers in Northern Ireland have faced an absurd level of interference in the normal affairs of a sovereign country, thanks to the EU’s obvious desire to make life as difficult as possible for a country which has left its empire.

Despite President Macron of France seemingly not understanding that Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, this is a fact. In response to Boris Johnson asking him at the G7 in Cornwall whether he would accept Toulouse sausages not being allowed free entry into Paris, he is said to have replied that “Toulouse and Paris are part of the same country.”

To our readers from the US, Australasia, and all other parts of the world we would simply ask them if they would accept the EU (or any other foreign power) dictating which products may or may not be moved from one part of their sovereign country to another.

To take one example, how would our Kiwi friends respond if the EU told them that they couldn’t move sheep or meat products from the North to the South Island unless they obeyed EU laws and directives?

Why are we asking the EU’s permission to move products within our own country?

Returning to where we began this piece, we would not choose to start from here when it comes to resolving the many issues of the Withdrawal Agreement and Northern Ireland Protocol (WA/NIP).

We are quite certain that Boris Johnson and Lord Frost felt this way when they inherited EU negotiations from the disastrous EU-acolyte Theresa May and her team of Europhile civil servants. Years of negotiations had produced an abomination, which the new PM and Lord Frost chose to alter slightly and sign, rather than tearing it up and facing some upheavals.

In our entire six years of existence, Facts4EU.Org has consistently argued that the only way to deal with the objectionable and bullying EU regime was to ‘Go-WTO’. On principle we could never have signed the WA/NIP.

The only option now, we suggest, is to withdraw unilaterally from the NIP on the basis of the bad faith shown by the EU and the fact that it breaches the Good Friday Agreement. The UK Government should then tell the world exactly why we were left with no choice.

The Northern Irish people are the countrymen and women of everyone who lives in the United Kingdom. They deserve to be treated as such.
