Tomorrow, Tuesday 02 June 2020, the fourth round of the UK-EU trade talks start. After harsh words were exchanged at the end of the last round of negotiations, Michel Barnier once again went on the attack against the UK just before the weekend.

Below we give a flavour of Monsieur Barnier’s remarks, but first we provide a summary of the latest trade figures from the EU itself. These are official figures – as with everything we research and publish – and come from the EU’s own official statistics agency. These are for last year, 2019.

Statistical note: We have converted Euros to Pounds at €1 = £1.14 which was the average exchange rate last year. There were 253 working days in the United Kingdom in 2019.

Tomorrow the fourth round of the UK-EU trade talks start. Originally scheduled to begin yesterday, a glance at the agenda shows that there may no longer be enough to talk about, to fill four days. In fact the calendar looks embarrassingly bare.

Readers may note that the real purpose of these trade talks – to do a deal on trade in goods and services – has been allocated just 12.5 hours by the EU.

Michel Barnier now seems to be spending more time on damage limitation than on negotiation

In a long interview with Deutschlandfunk (German state radio) on Friday, Monsieur Barnier pumped out his now familiar messages – this time direct to the German people.

“The British have not understood or do not want to understand that Brexit has consequences for them.” (Trans.: “The British must be punished.”)

“We won't make any progress if the British continue to peck raisins.” (Trans.: “Don’t cherry pick.”)

And as he was addressing a German audience he also used a German expression: “You cannot dance at two weddings at the same time.”

Observations

We make no apologies for repeating this. It is a sad fact that the true nature of the UK's goods trade with the EU has been hidden from the British public for years. For five years now we've had some success in getting the information out, and our research work is now sometimes reported in mainstream newspapers.

Unfortunately the BBC remains uninterested. In our view this should be a continuing question which must be asked of the BBC by MPs who are responsible for scrutinising it.

With the EU27’s goods exports to the UK totalling £279 billion in 2019, and the EU’s trade surplus running at £109 billion, one would have thought the EU27’s leaders really might not want to put that trade at risk.

Instead we have the prissy, French, old school 'dirigiste' Michel Barnier, still insisting that we must be punished - no matter the punishment he will inflict on the citizens of the EU who rely on trade with the United Kingdom for their jobs and livelihoods.

Do the EU not see the irony of the saying the UK is "cherry picking"..... Since the UK joined the so called common market, they have plundered our waters and bled us dry. What did we get in return for our generosity, apart from thousands of rules and regulations for a pittance in trade. I wont mention the flood of immigrants who have put an extra strain on schools and our NHS. The EU should respect a now sovereign country. They need to wake-up and smell the coffee. We wont allow the freeloaders in Brussels to dictate to us ever again.

The article demonstrates, to normal rational people anyway, the strength of our negotiating position.
Of course this is just half the story, as the balances reflect how it is now. The EU 'exports to the UK' currently include our own fish from our own waters, as under the EU regime we have been turned into a net importer of fish. So those positions should largely reverse once the tantrums stop. I cannot see the Germans being willing to forego their favourite breakfast, wholely fished from UK waters.
Much of the rest of the imbalance has been due, over our many years of membership, to the planned demolition of our manufacturing base, by the EU using our own money (as net contributors) to pay companies to relocate elsewhere in the EU.
The EU never does a deal until the last moment. They obviously believe that they have enough insurgents in place to scupper our independence, as with the military 'integration' plans. Perhaps no-one is willing to tell them that the Emporer has no clothes. Their wild spending plans indicate that they think that we will still be on the hook for bailing them out. The Dutch MEP Derk van Eppink summed it up nicely...

Time for Boris to put his big boy socks on & walk away. He put us in this mess with his appalling & unnecessary WA. Sack the EUlings. Remove all those who've sworn the oath to put the EU above this country. The EU is busy heaping its own funeral pyre. We want no part of it.

It is truly pathetic the years that we have been a member of this socialist 'super-power' (in their utopian dreams). The number of lies big and small coming from Westminster and the EU about it's real purpose in life are just staggering.
Even now Brussels is desperate for the UK funds not to help the nations that they have almost ruined of course, oh no - ever more integration. Well I for one have my sparkling wine ready to celebrate the demise of the EU. It cannot come soon enough.
