A confident United Kingdom versus an EU in continual crises - Saturday editorial

February 2020, boosted by its additional 29th day today, may well leap into Brexit history as one of its pivotal periods.

From UK Brexit Negotiator David Frost’s excellent speech at Brussels University on 17 Feb, to Michael Gove’s confident performance in the Commons on Thursday presenting the UK Government’s negotiating document, there has been a robustness which has surprised many people amongst the Brexit community.

At last it seems we have a Government that knows that ‘Brexit means Brexit’ and - unlike Theresa May - they seem to understand fully what this ‘Brexit’ actually means.

Boris has evoked cheers from Brexiteers, and has shocked Brussels cave-dwellers

On Brexit at least, Boris Johnson’s Government has been impressing all manner of Brexiteers from right and left, and at the same time dismaying the Brussels-dwellers in equal measure.

Key amongst those still reeling in a state of shock are 27 extremist, fanatical, super-statist ideologues whose mission is to guide the EU project on its ever more totalitarian path towards total homogeneity and complete control.

Brexit Facts4EU.Org Summary

These 27 individuals include:

  • 1 President
  • 3 Executive Vice-Presidents
  • 1 High Representative Vice-President
  • 4 (ordinary) Vice Presidents
  • 18 Commissioners

They comprise the EU Commission, they run almost everything, and not one was elected by the people

The Commission : A key target hit by Boris’s ‘Brexit shock and awe’ February campaign

To a very significant degree the 27 people of the EU Commission run the EU, and yet not one of them was elected to their role by anything remotely approaching a popular mandate. Indeed their President – who until her appointment was the most highly-criticised minister of the German government - was parachuted in at the last moment when EU leaders could not agree on anyone else.

These 27 individuals are true believers in the EU Projekt. Many of them have never held a ‘real job’ in their lives of course. Earlier this week we gave the example of the Competition Commissioner, whose responsibilities would have included policing the UK’s adherence to the ‘level playing field’ if Boris had not vetoed this. She has no business experience whatsoever.

Are they fighting back? Of course they are

These Commissioners are now fighting battles on so many fronts that Brexit would not figure highly except for one key factor.

No member state leaving the EU can be allowed to prosper on the global stage.

Such a member state must be punished as severely as possible,

regardless of what the EU Treaty says about being good neighbours.

As a consequence, Brexit will continue to consume the minds of the zealots comprising the EU Commission. Early signs of this have shown in the last week, with the Commission jumping on every suggestion of unacceptable items to be added to their negotiating mandate, from the Elgin marbles to Gibraltar.

Observations

It is a great pleasure after so long spent criticising the government in the last four years to find ourselves able to welcome so much of this Government’s Brexit strategy.

That said, it must be remembered that there are just four months remaining until 30 June, which is the notional deadline for requesting an extension to the Transition Period. With years of experience of seeing deadlines extended, no-one should relax, and there are a great many issues which must be scrutinised.

If we don't do this, we can guarantee one thing: readers won't find the BBC doing it.

Still, it hasn’t been a bad month for Brexit, has it?

We're really, really hoping to be able to get back to our normal lives and to earning a proper living again. Until then the Brexit Facts4EU.Org team continues to need your help. Please donate something today, no matter how small. Quick and secure donation methods are below. Thank you.
