The news in 2020 will be dominated by UK trade talks with the EU, once the “Withdrawal Agreement” becomes an international treaty on 01 February 2020.

Despite the UK having voted to leave the European Union in June 2016, the EU Commission will not be ready to discuss ongoing trade until March next year. That’s three years and nine months of the EU refusing to start engaging in trade talks with the United Kingdom – its second-largest goods export market.

This becomes 85% after excluding Norway, Switzerland, and Turkey
(These countries have close ties to the EU - Customs Union and/or Single Market)

The above are summary figures researched from the EU’s 2019 report on the implementation of EU free trade agreements.

Furthermore, the UK is the EU27’s 2nd-largest market for goods

Observations

We suspect that no-one wants to read a detailed report on trade figures at Christmas. Regular readers will know that we have published many detailed and well-researched pieces on this subject this year.

Nevertheless, we thought a quick summary might be digestible. 85% of sales into the EU come from countries without either a trade deal or Single Market and Customs Union membership. This is according to the EU Commission in its trade report published in October.

When the EU is finally ready to discuss trade with the UK in March next year (2020), we sincerely hope that UK negotiators will walk into the room with the right attitude.

Can anyone explain why we are giving the EU £39 Billion (that's £650 for every man, woman and child), and probably a lot more, just to initiate talks with the EU on a Free Trade Agreement, when most countries trade without one? What on earth do we hope to gain from this? Why do the Tories continue with this shocking waste of money promised by that wretched quisling May (and when only giving 6 Billion towards building 40 new hospitals)?
Utterly shameful.

James Bertram: The only reason that I can think of why we are giving the EU billions is that Theresa May and Olly Robbins naively thought that the EU would be nice to us if they handed over the cash. Other than that they were keeping us close so that if we didn't have a (planned) second referendum and actually left, then it would be easy to rejoin in the future. Also there is no reason why we should have written off our share of the EU's assets, or agreed only to take back our original stake in the EIB (index linked) rather than the percentage share that our original stake represented, taking account of the growth and profits of the bank. They were hopelessly spineless and the fact that when Olly Robbins resigned he received a knighthood and walked into a job at Goldman Sachs shows how utterly rotten this country is. I expect better from Boris, but I'm not going to hold my breath after he went into a meeting with Varadkar the Irish PM saying that there would have to be checks in Ireland and came out telling us they had a great deal putting a border down the Irish Sea!

Comment 1 - Mr Bertram. I was always under the impression that to pay a foreign entity in the interests of trade was ''bribery'' and therefore illegal. This is, as you say, shameful.
''....once the “Withdrawal Agreement” becomes an international treaty on 01 February 2020....'' And THIS after many MPs pledged on standup4brexit.com that May's WA would be ''abandoned'' as ''dead''. And it hasn't been, has it? It's been admitted that it's the same ''WA'' but with slight tweaks and is the same one that these MPs voted against - three times, for some. What has changed their minds?
We are being cheated and insulted yet again.
