Since the United Kingdom joined the ‘Common Market’ (now the EU), on 01 January 1973, the fact that the UK is the senior voice in a friendly grouping of 53 countries across the globe has been sidelined by much of the media.

Below we put this right, with some comparative figures.

The Commonwealth

The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 53 independent and equal sovereign states. It is home to 2.4 billion people and includes both advanced economies and developing countries. Its shared values and principles are inscribed in the Commonwealth Charter.

Unlike the EU...

  • The Commonwealth does not strip sovereignty from its members
  • It does not demand that members have laws imposed upon them by a supranational body
  • Nor to subject themselves to a foreign court
  • Nor to control their immigration policies
  • Nor to pay vast annual sums for membership
  • Nor to be prevented from doing trade deals globally

The Commonwealth contains some of the largest economies in the World – and some of the smallest. Above all it is affectionately referred to as a ‘family’.

Observations

Listening to Remain MPs one could be forgiven for thinking that they have been obsessed with the idea of the EU to the exclusion of all the other countries in the World.

It is as if their world contains just 27 countries.

We have news for them. The World is a bit bigger than that. And amazingly the UK still carries some power and influence across the globe.
