Part III – Total annual cost to taxpayer has soared by 8 TIMES in only 5 YEARS
Part IV - “Chaotic” – Government’s Independent Chief Migration Inspector slams Home Office and is fired
As at the end of March this year, the UK was financially supporting 104,517 illegal migrants, of whom more than 96% (100,887) were being provided with free accommodation. This number has almost doubled in just three years, as we show below.
Most illegal migrant asylum seekers don’t come by boat – the total number is much higher
All of the talk about the UK’s illegal migrants focuses on the boat migrants crossing the Channel. We can now reveal that these only tell less than half the story of all illegal migrant asylum seekers in the UK.
It means that the numbers regularly quoted in most of the media severely understate the problem. In fact the overall number of illegal migrant asylum seekers from land and air is 35% more than those from boat migrants only.
How many illegal migrants is the UK housing and supporting?

Who are these other asylum seekers?
The almost 40,000 asylum seekers from sources other than illegal boat crossings are caused by :
- Those who overstayed their visas
- Those who lied on their original visa application forms
- Those who entered on the back of a lorry
- Those who now claim it is unsafe for them to return to their home country
Asylum seekers use a variety of routes to travel to the UK. Some arrive via clandestine (illegal) routes, such as small boats, others travel to the UK on a visa before claiming asylum. Some of the latter claim asylum immediately upon arrival to the UK whilst others have been present in the UK some time prior to making an asylum claim. The majority of small boat arrivals claim asylum.
Where are we housing these illegal migrants?

Hotels being used as contingency asylum accommodation
- Jul 2023 : almost 400 hotels
- Jan 2024 : Home Office had only stopped using 64
As of the end of March 2024, there were nearly 36,000 asylum seekers living in hotels as a form of contingency accommodation.
This is expensive. According to the Home Office hotels cost £140 per person per night compared to £18 for normal asylum accommodation as of March 2023. The Government says the total cost is equivalent to £8 million per day, which equates to an annual spend of £2.9 billion.
Is the Home Office on top of its brief?
“I have previously highlighted the inexcusably awful quality of Home Office data, which was evident again in this inspection.”
- Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration, Feb 2024
Having spent weeks researching for this series of reports, unfortunately we would have to agree with the independent Chief Inspector.
And what of the Bibby Stockholm barge – not classified as an hotel?
The new Labour Government has announced the closure of this facility. Below we show how much this was costing, without the extra set-up costs.
“The latest running costs are £120 per person per night, compared with the latest average hotel cost of £140 per person per night. These running costs exclude set-up costs.”
- Sir Matthew Rycroft KCMG CBE, Permanent Secretary, Home Office, 30 Jan 2024
Observations
For the British people to be housing and financially supporting over 100,000 illegal migrants who are mostly male and mostly what can only be described as economic migrants – and for this number to have doubled in the last three years - must be described as a major failure by our political class.
We are well aware that many MPs do not regard the illegal migrant crisis as a crisis at all. It seems that many still harbour the view either that we should welcome in all-comers, and/or that the British public’s alarm about this is because far too many are some kind of closet racists and xenophobes. Judging from our mailbag over the past eight years these members of the public are nothing of the kind.
There is nothing xenophobic or racist about maintaining our borders as an independent nation state.
No-one objects to our traditional role in helping people in genuine distress, escaping real persecution. The British public has proved this over and over again. However, when it comes to what amounts to a partial and continued displacement of the indigenous population by strangers seeking riches, we agree with the vast majority of our readers that this is not acceptable.
NOTICE : Facts4EU is now scaling back to publishing 5 days-a-week
For over eight years we have worked seven days-a-week. As far as we are aware we are the only organisation of our type to have done this. We are grateful to those of our readers who have made donations but sadly the level of our funding is now such that we must make it stretch for as long as we can. This means team members taking other paid work and reducing our output to five days-a-week.
Please, please help us to carry on our vital work in defence of independence, sovereignty, democracy and freedom by donating today. Thank you.
