Pro-rata, this is what happened in Israel three years ago today

Today marks the third anniversary of the almost unspeakable atrocities of 07 October 2023 - a day that permanently reordered the global geopolitical landscape and left an indelible scar on the collective consciousness of the civilized world.

Three years have passed since a coordinated wave of terror breached the sovereign borders of Israel, systematically targeting the peaceful agricultural communities, kibbutzim, and administrative regions officially designated as "the Gaza Envelope". The area is so-called because although it is fully within Israel, it lies adjacent to the border with the Gaza Strip.

A geography of trauma: What the atrocities reveal about the UK’s own tearing social fabric

For many in the United Kingdom, the sheer distance of the Middle East can render these events abstract, parsing the human cost into distant headlines. To understand the true magnitude of what transpired, we have gone beyond the geography to look at the raw, devastating maths of the appalling human toll.

On that single day three years ago in Israel, approximately 1,200 people were murdered, over 5,400 were wounded, and 251 hostages were forcibly dragged into captivity. The depravity of those committing these crimes goes beyond words.

To understand how this trauma vibrates through a society, we have looked at it pro-rata for the UK. Israel is a small country, with a total population currently estimated by its Central Bureau of Statistics at 10.3 million. By contrast, the UK houses 69.5 million people according to the Office for National Statistics. If an atrocity of the same relative proportion were unleashed on British soil, the numbers would look like a national apocalypse.

Pro-rata scaling if 07 October had happened in the UK

  • Fatalities: 8,100 dead
  • Wounded: 36,400 injured
  • Hostages: 1,700 taken captive
  • TOTAL VICTIMS: 46,200

In a single afternoon, 8,100 British men, women, and children would be dead. Over 36,400 would be filled with shrapnel, bullet and knife wounds, clogging every emergency room from London to Manchester. And 1,700 British citizens would be missing - held captive in subterranean tunnels, their fates unknown to their terrified families for years.

A sobering question: how has the British public responded to an event of this magnitude?

As a firmly non-racist country that prides itself on the rule of law and the protection of minorities, the subsequent months and years should have yielded an outpouring of unified solidarity. Instead, the anniversary arrives amidst a deeply disturbing domestic shift.

Almost unbelievably, the Metropolitan Police have granted permission for a mass pro-Palestinian march in London today. To call this march insensitive and an incitement on this anniversary would be a gross understatement.

Reconciling 07 October with Britain’s rising antisemitism

Today’s sombre remembrance also comes just days after the Green Party, in all its wisdom at its conference in Brighton, decided that the core environmental issues on which it was founded should be set aside. Instead, delegates voted to approve a highly controversial resolution declaring that "Zionism is a form of racism," formally adopting an anti-Zionist party policy. This decision will simply compound the rise in antisemitism across the UK - a crisis that the current government is failing, in our view, to deal with sufficiently.

According to the half-year records compiled by the Community Security Trust (CST), antisemitic incidents in the United Kingdom surged to a historic total of 1,926 recorded cases in the first half of 2026 alone.

The shameful, relative silence

British Jews are being targeted outside schools, inside universities, and on the streets of our cities. The boundary between legitimate foreign policy critique and raw, unchecked racial hatred has been aggressively erased.

Commemorating 07 October is no longer just an act of international remembrance; it has become an urgent mirror for the state of British society. When an atrocity of this scale is met not with universal condemnation, but with a corresponding rise in local prejudice, our own social fabric begins to fray.

The relative political silence on this crisis, compared to the overwhelming response that would have occurred had the victims belonged to a different minority group, remains stark.

A year ago, we were writing about the tragic aftermath of the Heaton Park Synagogue terror event in Manchester. Three years on from the events in Israel, the enduring lesson of the Gaza Envelope is that security is fragile - and the battle against antisemitism is not a distant foreign policy issue. It is happening on our very doorsteps.
