Now we're being put in the dock by complicit and hypocritical African nations in an opportunistic, flawed, reparations campaign

The history of Britain’s fight for abolition - Some key dates

1772: Somerset vs Stewart: Lord Mansfield ruled that slavery had no basis in English law
1807: The Slavery Trade Act prohibited the slave trade throughout the British Empire
1807: Establishment of the West Africa Squadron that resulted in the release of 150,000 captives bound for the Americas
1815: The Declaration of Vienna. Britain pressures France, Spain, Russia, Prussia, Sweden and Austria to commit to abolishing slavery
1833: The Slavery Abolition Act abolished slavery throughout the British Empire

Critically, Graham tells us a great deal about African and Arab nations and their involvement in the slave trade. This involvement was clearly very lucrative for them, which is why they continued to ply this trade long after Britain had abolished slavery and the evil trade in it.

Naturally this is highly relevant to the claims they are now making against the UK, to pay them vast sums of money for something they themselves had been doing for a long time. And as Graham points out, some are still involved in this trade to this day.

With international law likely to become involved, we worry that Sir Keir Starmer and Lord Hermer will rush to polish their credentials and prostrate themselves and the United Kingdom before the International Court of Justice. Graham can see this happening despite the realities he lays out so clearly for us.

Reparations. How about claiming for the UK continuing to maintain a protective relationship with 14 Overseas Territories? (until the Cyprus issue !) Howabout taking all the overseas aid the UK has given into account?

Well How about the UK demands reparations from the Barbary Corsairs (16th to 19th centuries): Pirates from North Africa, particularly the Barbary Coast, conducted raids on British coastal towns, capturing people to sell into slavery. These raids targeted ports and even inland areas, resulting in the enslavement of thousands of Europeans.

Then another claim for the Royal Navy's anti slavery operations in the 19th century, it is estimated that around 1,600 British sailors died as a result of various factors, including battles, disease, and harsh conditions while trying to suppress the transatlantic slave trade.

Then another claim upon the Danes......
Then another claim upon the Norwegians......

In 1833 Britain used 40% of its national budget to free all slaves in the empire (not in the best way, however...). The loan for the Slavery Abolition Act was so large it was not paid off until 2015

2026 - Are we headed to enslavery whereby the state controls everything with digital finance, what you can think... the list is endless - so just look at China.

it all makes me smile. People have no idea about slavery in Africa. It was Africans themselves that bought the slaves to white men. The white men were not stupid. They knew that if they went into the interior of Africa, they would most likely die of disease. Africans bought them to West Coast.
During the early 18th century, the Kings of Dahomey, located in present-day Benin, became significant participants in the transatlantic slave trade. They waged relentless wars against neighbouring communities, resulting in the capture of approximately 10,000 people. Another key player in the trade was the King of Whydah. King Tegbesu, for instance, earned an estimated £250,000 annually through the sale of enslaved individuals—a sum equivalent to £29,167,300 in today’s currency.
By 1750, the practice remained deeply entrenched. In the 1840s, King Gezo famously declared that he was willing to comply with any British demands, except for abandoning the lucrative slave trade.He said
The slave trade is the ruling principle of my people. It is the source and the glory of their wealth… the mother lulls the child to sleep with notes of triumph over an enemy reduced to slavery…
So as far as I am concerned, go with the begging bowl to today's relatives of King Tegbesu

There was, of course, another case not mentioned - Cartwright of 1569. If I recall my history correctly Cartwright had been a merchant in Moscow where he had been given a Slave (the word Slave is derived from the word Slav) and was seen beating the man. It is thought he was brought before Star Chamber charged with battery, but he argued this could not be because the man was a slave and thus 'property'. This was dismissed and it is thought that memorable phrase 'the air of England is too pure for any slave to breath' originated from that case. Alas the exact records are lost, but the case is quoted in some early texts.

I've just received a nasty letter from the descendants of Henry Ford demanding I pay reparations to the Ford family, because they previously sold me a number of cars.
