“Sir Ed, what if you and the LibDems were subject to OfCom regulations?”

Uncomfortable facts for Mr Davey regarding his accusations about GB News and the letter from its CEO

We provide the evidence that Sir Ed Davey and his Liberal Democrat MPs may prefer not to read

On Wednesday the leader of the Liberal Democrats, the Rt Hon Sir Ed Davey MP, launched an unprovoked, aggressive, and defamatory attack on the best thing that’s happened on the British media scene for many years: the arrival of GB News.

In response, GBN’s CEO, Angelos Frangopoulos, published a public letter which wholly refuted Sir Ed’s allegations of bias, pointing out that OfCom, whose job it is as regulator to deal with such things, had investigated GB News many times and where it had found fault it transpired it was in the wrong, as proved in the High Court. Here is the exchange:-

The Rt Hon Ed Davey MP

“Moving on, a New World investigation into GB News has found hundreds of shocking breaches of the rules of impartiality and accuracy, yet Ofcom has repeatedly refused to take action. Andrew Neil says:

“Just as Fox basically became the channel of Donald Trump, it’s clear they have turned GB News into the Reform channel”.

“We cannot let GB News propaganda turn our great country into its version of Trump’s America. Either the Government rules are not fit for purpose or Ofcom is not properly enforcing them—which is it?”

The Prime Minister

“The right hon. Member is right to raise an important question of free speech and our media.

“It is a matter for Ofcom, and it is important that we let it deal with it.”

Here is some independent evidence for Sir Ed Davey, which may make for uncomfortable reading

I am writing as Chairman of a number of serious organisations to provide evidence to disprove Sir Ed’s accusations - from an independent perspective. We found what he had to say outrageous and would be very interested to see if he repeats it outside Parliament, where he is no longer protected by parliamentary privilege.

We have provided much material to GBN over the past couple of years. This has been extensively covered on a regular basis on the TV Channel and on the digital side (the online newspaper) and our real-life experience may be of interest to Sir Ed and it certainly should be to the public.

Factual evidence from the official sources

The material we provide to GBN is based on our reports. Unlike most organisations, we publish several reports every week, and are funded purely by public donations. Our output is based on research of the official facts from the relevant official bodies on the subjects in question. If Sir Ed can’t trust organisations such as these, we wonder who he does trust.

Typically we source from the Office for National Statistics, Hansard, the IMF, the World Bank, the UN, and Government Departments such as HM Treasury, etc. Despite this, GB News always check our information and go to the Government for its response to the stories we provide. Naturally, we leave the Government with nowhere to go, so GBN typically receives a bland statement or often none at all.

A wide variety of political viewpoints are requested and published

We also try to get different political perspectives on these stories and request comments. As an example, this week GBN has run two stories from us on the new Net Zero taxes which the Government is introducing which will affect every person and a great many businesses in the country.

We involved as many political viewpoints as possible. Across the two stories we quoted the following:

  • Richard Tice MP, Deputy Leader of Reform UK
  • The Rt Hon Lord Redwood, former Conservative Secretary of State
  • The Rt Hon Baroness Kate Hoey, former Labour Minister
  • Michelle McIlveen MLA, Deputy Leader of the DUP
  • Chris McDonald MP, (Labour) Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Department for Energy Security and Net Zero
  • Jim Allister KC MP, Leader of the TUV
  • Hansard
  • The World Bank
  • Northern Ireland Assembly Official Reports
  • Oxford University’s ‘Our World in Data’ project

In several cases, the comments were given exclusively to GB News and to three of the organisations I chair which deal with independence, sovereignty, democracy, and freedoms: The Campaign for an Independent Britain (the longest-running in the UK, founded in 1969), Brexit Facts4EU (8 years of publishing 7 days-a-week and 2 years publishing 3-4 times per week), and the Stand for Our Sovereignty (weekly).

Despite this, GB News still insisted on requesting a right to reply from the Government.

Don't leave this to someone else. You are that 'someone else'.

The uncomfortable truth for Mr Davey

“Mr Davey, you may not like what we publish - as it directly contradicts your party’s claims on many subjects, using the official facts to disprove them – but do please tell us how GB News has in any way demonstrated bias in reporting them?”

The uncomfortable truth for Mr Davey is that he would be in for a very difficult time if his own party were regulated by a statutory body like OfCom. The completely false propaganda pushed out on a regular basis by his Party about the United Kingdom’s new-found independence from the EU is a case in point.

“And yes, Mr Davey, we will happily interview you at any time on this subject. And unlike the report you quoted in Parliament on Wednesday, we will print it and publish the video in full, rather than using selective quotes.

“If you refuse to do that, what about replying to the letter from the GB News Chief Executive, Mr Frangopoulos?”

Observations

All we can say is that our experience of GB News is that they frequently ask us to justify any claims we make, and often require links to the information.

These are not the signs of an organisation of the type Sir Ed Davey describes.

GB News is quite capable of defending itself but we thought readers might find our experience of interest.

Please, please help us to carry on our vital work in defence of independence, sovereignty, democracy and freedom by donating today. Thank you.
