Poor Rachel. Yesterday, our takedown of the Government’s economic performance was hugely popular by all who read it. If you missed it, now’s your chance. Rachel Reeves may wish to avert her eyes again.

Brexit did not cause Britain’s growth malaise, but it undoubtedly deepened it. Nor did it create our fiscal woes, although it worsened them too. Denial about this helps no one. Indeed, a successful sovereign economic policy demands taking responsibility and facing the world as it is, not as we wish it to be.

The very fact that the UK economy has outperformed those of Italy, France and Germany since Brexit tells you that Brexit is not the problem in a world where slow growth is now the norm. Until Labour got into power the UK had performed well but the cost of Rachel Thieves' budgets is far greater than any cost related to Brexit.

That seems to consist of subsidising them to NOT produce food. Solar power, re-wilding, building houses all good.
Actually growing food, leave that to the foreigners, seems to be the message.

The was in Iran is showing how vulnerable the Uk is to importing fossil fuels. Renewable energy was 47% of the UK energy supply in 2025. Balance that against what's happening with petrol and energy prices we need more Net Zero.

In 2025 renewable energy generated in the UK was constantly varying between 30% and 50% of our energy supply so you need to have backup supply which is expensive. Even before the Iran war the UK had the highest industrial electricity prices in the world and one of the highest domestic electricity prices.

The UK is much more vulnerable to importing fossil fuels since the Labour party came to power. Last year 2 of the UK's 6 oil refineries became bankrupt because of high energy prices. The result is we have far fewer options to meet our energy needs and we are far more vulnerable. Labour policies have also wiped out the UK's bioethanol fuel industry which used to produce 1.4 Billion litres of fuel per year. We now produce 0 litres. All your Labour party have manged to demonstrate so far is how vulnerable British Industry is to high energy prices !

Ed and Kier are correct in one respect. By wiping out British Industry and making energy too expensive for domestic customers we will not need much energy so we will self sufficient. We will be cold, destitute and miserable but we will be self sufficient in energy !

Both of you are making the common mistake of equating "energy" and "electricity".
Electricity is a relatively small share of UK energy consumption.
Broadly speaking, our buildings are heated with gas and our transport runs off petrol/diesel.
When these are included, "renewable" energy accounts for about 20% of total energy. But most of that renewable energy is from burning woodchips and other "biomass".
The percentage of UK total energy consumption from wind and solar is rather small, probably single-digit per cent.

When did I make that mistake ?
I was reply to Sparky's comments about the wisdom of being reliant on "renewable energy". I may have used the term "energy" instead of "electricity" but obviously "renewable energy" is only generating electricity. To meet nett zero targets the Government's plan is to reduce gas and petrol/diesel consumption and replace them with electricity generated from renewable sources (Heat Pumps, Solar Panels, EV's etc) so electricity will gradually become our main source of energy.

According to the annual figures I have seen for 2025 "woodchips/biomass" generated 17.9% of total renewable energy (7.9% of total electricity generated) and wind generated 81% (34.2% of total electricity generated). As there is only one company generating "woodchip energy" and they are producing at maximum capacity it will gradually become a very small percentage of the renewable energy generated.

As you say, that should be electricity supply not energy supply.
You are right about the biomass though.
