Every now again, a speech causes you to stop and really listen. Today we are bringing you one such speech.

It was given in the House of Lords last Thursday and lasts only four minutes. It’s cogent, well-argued, persuasive, and it hits its target. Only those who are so ideologically opposed to what the speaker says that they are blinded to reason, could fail to be persuaded. Sadly, as the speaker remarks in his speech, some of those listening to him in the Chamber fall into the ‘ideologically-blinded’ category.

By contrast, our regular readers – and all others who are reading this with an open mind – should find this very interesting indeed.

We urge you to take four minutes out of your day to watch and listen to the speech below.

About the Speaker, Jon Moynihan, Baron Moynihan of Chelsea

The Rt Hon Lord Moynihan of Chelsea OBE is a businessman, and a very successful one at that. He is probably best known for being CEO and executive chairman of PA Consulting Group for an astonishing 21 years, from 1992 to 2013. After stepping down as CEO, he then stayed on as Chairman until the business was sold, but not until his input over the years had transformed a business on the verge of bankruptcy at the start into one that was ultimately sold for $2.5 billion.

“This is, quite simply, the economic blueprint to put the UK back on the path to growth, prosperity, and freedom. It is written in what could be described broadly as a ‘layman’s style’, although some may find it challenging here and there. Persevere, though, and you will be rewarded.
“So much of what Lord Moynihan writes is prescient. Fortunately I believe he will come to see some of his widely-panned theories come true in his own lifetime. I particularly enjoyed his ridiculing of the OBR – a theme he briefly mentions in his latest speech.

A hardworking Peer (Yes, there are more than we all may think)

There is not enough space to list Lord Moynihan’s various honours and activities outside business and outside his work in the House of Lords, including all his charity work. Suffice to say that this is a man used to getting things done. Any not-for-profit which is lucky enough to receive his help and advice is a very lucky organisation indeed.

On the political level, we will just single out his recent work in respect of hate crime on amendments to the inadequate Crime and Policing Bill. Naturally he has been opposed all the way in his attempts to get ‘crimes’ relating to ‘hate crime’ abolished. The Bill is currently at Committee stage. Regular readers will know that we first started reporting on the whole area of hate crime many years ago, long before it was fashionable to do so.

Observations

We hope readers enjoyed Baron Moynihan of Chelsea’s speech as much as we did. It may be of interest to know that our podcast tomorrow – Episode II of our new Podcast Editor’s output – is also on the subject of the EU’s Customs Union.

Well said that man. Particularly the highlighting of the 'Net Zero' economy/manufacturing damaging nonsense Though no surprise to see how few of our Upper chamber members bothered to stay and listen.

The UK Services sector has shown consistent growth since 2008 and is around 80% of the UK economy. The BCC produced a report in Aug 25 titled "THE REALITY OF UK SERVICES TRADE POST-BREXIT" in which claims services exports have declined by 16% in EU markets as a result of Brexit.

The US economy has shown consistent growth for many years, he seems to think it has only been recent. The US economy has benefited from increased oil exports as a result of the Ukraine war and sanctions on Russian oil. The US was signed up to the Paris agreement until Trump was elected and you can bet it will rejoin after the next election.

He clearly hasn't noticed that the EU has recently signed a trade deal with India.

Issues highlighted such as a ballooning public sector has been our doing before and after Brexit. If anything Brexit has required a larger public sector due to being outside the EU. Remember cutting Red Tape, that was soon forgotten about.

And after all, Brexit wasn't about trade, it was about immigration and we know what has happened since Brexit.

Sparky. You obviously don't like facts about the economic damage the restrictions of being part of the eu caused and the failure of our subsequent governments had on taking advantage of our economic freedom.
But your suggestion that the high level of illegal immigration is a result of brexit is farcical. Subsequent government's have made illegal immigration attractive, and our latest mockery of a government has disgracefully made it worse ... smash the gangs is beyond a joke now.
If you actually think being in the eurocracy would reduce illegal immigration then just look at the damage Merkels policy is having in the eurocracys nations and tell me how open borders would have benefited us.

You are misquoting as usual !

The BCC actually said:
"services exports have declined by around 16% in the EU markets MOST affected by Brexit-related trade barriers" and they also stated
"Overall, UK services exports to the EU are estimated to be 4-5% lower than they would have been without Brexit."

The BCC were actually quoting a report from the LSE which along with other Universities have constantly produced false reports about Brexit. Universities also constitute a large section of the BCC memberships. If you listen to Lord Moynihan he mentions the ridiculous claims that have constantly come from Universities.
.
The EU's recent trade deal with India and the still ongoing Mercosur saga are actually panic reactions because EU exports to the USA and China have declined significantly. Lord Moynihan also mentions this issue.
.
Most open minded people prefer to listen to exporters directly via their legal reports and public statements. The rejoiners always prefer to quote non-exporting organisations (Universities, Public Sector) who always claim they are quoting from businesses but never give any examples of who these businesses are.

The Paris agreement became legal in 2017. Since then (2017 to 2024) global emission have increased by 10% and, excluding the pandemic, the rate of increase has hardly changed since 1960. A sensible Government would analyse this problem to see if other nations are using this to gain a competitive advantage !

… you would think that was a waste of Moynihan’s money.
But:
Moynihan was nominated by Truss for a life peerage in her list of resignation honours.
