EXCLUSIVE: EU’s hypocrisy is breathtaking on ‘International Democracy Day’

EU celebrates democratic values while denying vote to nearly 2m British citizens

We blow the lid on the EU’s removal of basic democratic rights – and the UK Government’s complicity

In this report we expose the full extent of the EU’s denial of democratic rights for the first time – rights which are so basic they are shared by every democratic country in the World, except for the EU in respect of its treatment of the UK.

This exposé comes as the EU celebrated its credentials on ‘International Democracy Day’ last Monday, as a champion of democratic rights for all peoples in non-EU countries. The victims of this full-frontal assault by the EU on a central tenet of democracy comprise nearly two million citizens of the United Kingdom. This makes this a real problem with real consequences, rather than a debate for the political theorists.

Furthermore, not only has the EU foregone any right to lecture other countries on minimum democratic standards – which it does when negotiating trade deals, for example – it has also directly interfered in the sovereignty of the British people. By its insistence on imposing its own laws on a sovereign, neighbouring state, it is in breach of its own internal Treaty obligations.

What makes this report unique is that we can demonstrate the EU’s deliberate denial of democracy to the public graphically, in a way that brings home the sheer scale of its brazen behaviour. We have prepared this report with our colleagues at Stand for Our Sovereignty and in association with GB News.

The Battle of Britain and the Battle for the United Kingdom

Fast-forward 85 years

85 years after that same day in 1940, 15 September 2025, a different kind of event was being celebrated in Brussels. The EU chooses not to remember the heroic sacrifice of those fine young men from the United Kingdom and its Commonwealth, together with those from defeated Polish and other squadrons – pilots who had managed to make it to our shores after their own countries in Europe fell.

Instead on 15 September, the EU chooses to celebrate ‘International Democracy Day’.

The EU is often criticised for its hypocrisy. This time it was in plain sight – and ‘on steroids’

Here is the EU’s view on democracy

Below is the X post (‘tweet’) from the official EU Commission account on the morning of 15th September. This identifies the EU firmly with the ideals of International Democracy Day, which it celebrates by co-funding a two day event in Brussels in its honour.

The opening phrase is “Built on voting” which everyone would agree with. This voting should be for the people we choose to govern us and who will make the laws we must live by. Democracy doesn’t get much more fundamental than that.

The EU’s tweet continues by invoking “speaking up” which is precisely what so many have been trying to do. It is noticeable that “Being listened to” is not mentioned.

Finally, the EU Commission declares that democracy is “the backbone of our European Union”.

Unfortunately none of this is true, for the reasons set out below.

The backbone is that of a crumbling edifice which is in dire need of a spinal tap*, as the rest of this report proves beyond any doubt.

* (“A lumbar puncture, also known as a spinal tap, is a medical procedure in which a needle is inserted into the spinal canal, most commonly to collect cerebrospinal fluid for diagnostic testing. The main reason for a lumbar puncture is to help diagnose diseases of the central nervous system, including the brain and spine.”)

Naturally, this being the EU, the event took place three days late, and lasted two days not one

Without a hint of irony, the EU’s version of the ‘International Day of Democracy’ (official date Monday 15 September) did not start until Thursday 18 September and it was in fact spread over the following day too.

On the day itself, however, the EU Commission was in no doubt of its commitment. Here is the start of the typical self-congratulatory statement it issued on the 15th.

The noticeable feature of the EU Commission’s pronouncements about this International Day of Democracy, as well as those about the event which started three days later, was how it was entirely outward-facing and the EU did not include itself. Its focus was on how democracy must be implemented/rescued in countries other than those within the EU. From the EU’s perspective it believes itself to be the beacon of virtue, where democracy is concerned.

The 'Horror Show' starts here

Below we show the legal annexes which affect nearly two million British people. Each thumbnail below is one page of A4, and there are 48 pages of them in total. It is important to note that each of these 48 pages only contain references – akin to headings – to EU laws, Directives, Regulations and Rules, with around 8 per page on average.

Each of these headings (around 350 of them) then have to be looked up in the EU’s legal database, where there are pages of text on each law, Directive, Regulation and Rule, running into thousands of pages of legal instruments governing the lives of all these British people.

The first ever web- and TV-friendly sight of the index of vast areas of EU law
which 2 million British people live under but have no say on and no vote over

Clicking on the thumbnails below takes you to a PDF of all the Annexes. This is the EU’s own list and we have not edited it in any way.

Imagine if this happened to the people of Hampshire

Hampshire’s population is similar to that of Northern Ireland, being a densely-populated county. Like the Province, if has ports, airports, cities, towns and glorious countryside.

It is inconceivable that this state of affairs would have been allowed to happen in Hampshire, so why has this been allowed to persist for the last four years in Northern Ireland? We sought the views of some political figures as well as those of the younger generation, who have grown up to find themselves in an undemocratic state that is supposedly part of the democratic United Kingdom.

The Younger Generation

“Very dramatic”, “a horror picture” – Affecting the sovereignty of all the UK, not just one part of it

The first-ever graphic representation of the enormous body of legal impositions inflicted on part of the UK by the EU (above) was described as “very dramatic” yesterday by a former Secretary of State to whom we gave an advance copy of this report. What is even worse, however, is that this does not stop there.

The EU is an incessant law-making machine. It makes new laws where Northern Ireland and the UK Government continue to have no say and no vote on them. The EU then makes N.I. impose these laws on themselves and police their enforcement. If they fail to do so, they will be taken to the EU’s Court and Administration which will enforce them, with penalties. In short, our “horror picture” will only get worse.

Now spreading to England, Scotland and Wales

This disease has already started to spread to mainland UK. Businesses in England, Scotland and Wales have found they must obey EU regulations for selling products across the Irish Sea, and these are so onerous that many have decided to stop. To be clear, these are British companies selling to other British companies, within our sovereign territory.

On top of this, Sir Keir Starmer has been agreeing similar measures with the EU for the whole of the UK, not just N.I.. Examples of this include the Metrology (‘weights & measures’) Bill which we reported on for GB News and which attracted over half a million hits – extraordinary for a technical-sounding story. This involves an EU Regulation having been being put into UK law, without any debate in Parliament. And this process of ‘creep, creep, creep’ is now established and set to keep growing, as part of Sir Keir’s disastrous ‘re-set’ of UK-EU relations. Whether you live in Birmingham, Blairgowrie, Bangor or Belfast, you will soon found your lives affected by laws over which you had no say and your MP had no vote.

Democracy

There is no definition of democracy in any dictionary in the world which contains such a gross denial of the public’s rights. Yet, this is the form of ‘democracy’ which the EU deems acceptable for a significant segment of the British population.

Despite this, the EU continues to maintain – and maintained again on 15 September – that “we reaffirm the vital importance of upholding democratic principles”, adding that “they are more important than ever and underpin the fabric of our societies.” (Joint statement, EU High Representative Kallas, EU Executive Vice-President Virkkunen and EU Commissioner McGrath.)

Let’s not forget the official post on X (tweet) from the EU Commission:

“Built on voting, speaking up, and staying informed. We’re not just celebrating it. Together, we’re nurturing it every day. Democracy, fundamental rights, and the rule of law are the backbone of our European Union.”

– EU Commission, X.com, 15 Sept 2025

Some final thoughts

“No self-respecting country with a future can afford to allow itself to be treated in this way.”

- Baroness Hoey

“Far from nurturing democracy every day the EU is doing something that no other developed country is doing. It is instead defying democracy every day by making legislation that it applies to us through a legislature in which we are not represented, denying democracy in relation to legislation where it previously held sway.”

- Jim Allister KC MP, Leader of the TUV

“The EU does not listen to electors, rejects election and referendum results it does not like, dismisses challenges to its bad ideas and policies, and uses bully tactics with those it disagrees with, given the chance.”

- The Rt Hon Sir John Redwood

“In today’s report we have shone a bright, shining light on an ice-cold issue at the heart of the darkness of ‘the European Projekt’: it has no democratic soul. This provides such a sharp contrast with the natural instincts of the British people that it reinforces why the decision in 2016 was the right one. It only remains for us to ensure it is implemented in full.”

- Leigh Evans, Chairman, Stand for Our Sovereignty

We leave the very final words to the next generation

Anna Henry, aged 24, speaks for many of her generation.

“It is hard to express the sense of personal injustice I feel when seeing the EU pretending to the world that it is a great champion of democracy when they have done more to undermine it in my country than anyone else. The simple truth is that the arrangements the EU has imposed on the UK have stolen from me the basic right which citizens of any real democracy enjoy: the right to vote to elect our own representatives to make all the laws to which we are subject.

“The extraordinary thing is that young people are constantly lectured by government about the importance of voting but the impact of the EU’s attack on UK democracy is that it has particularly damaged young people. At least people of my parents’ and grandparents’ generations had the right to elect people to make all the laws to which they were subject, until 2020. Under the EU’s plans young people of my generation and younger will always be denied this.

“The EU needs to wise up. Unjust arrangements are not sustainable. The full value of our vote must be restored.“

Anna Henry, commenting to Stand for Our Sovereignty and Brexit Facts4EU.Org, 20 Sept 2025
