PM’s new body makes Starmer collaborator with occupying power, in 'great public deception'
Today (02 Oct 2025) the MP Jim Allister KC is delivering a letter to the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Hilary Benn. We are grateful to Mr Allister for an advance copy of his letter, which GB readers can read exclusively here. Before contemplating this, however, readers may wish to follow a little Facts4EU story which will help to explain this.
We start with a little history lesson for the Deputy Prime Minister before carrying the implications of it through to a tale which is as close to real life as we can make it, to illustrate why Jim Allister considers the Government to be guilty of a gross deception of the British people.
The Deputy PM’s tenuous grasp of history
The United Kingdom’s Deputy Prime Minister has come out with some astonishing statements and claims in his political career. In any normal world his profound public ignorance on many topics would have been enough to make him a joke candidate for any senior role in public life. However we do not live in a normal world.
In the fantasy world witnessed at the Labour Party conference, there was much which would have astonished those who lived through the Second World War. Certainly the claim made by the Deputy Prime Minister this week that the man leading the most popular party in the country “flirted with Hitler Youth when younger” would have struck them as an almost incredible accusation to make. For this to have followed a lame statement that he was not, of course, playing the man but the ball, would quite possibly have left them speechless at the incongruity.
“I'm not going to play the man.
“I'm playing the ball, as our leader did.
“I will leave it for the public to come to their own judgements about someone who once flirted with Hitler Youth when he was younger.”
- David Lammy, Deputy PM, BBC interview, Labour Party Conference 2025
The people of the wartime generation would have been unfamiliar with a person called Nigel Farage. They would, however, have been very familiar with terms such as ‘Hitler Youth’ and another term used at the time: ‘Quisling’. For the benefit of our Deputy PM, we will explain that Quisling was a term used to describe a collaborator with the enemy – a traitor to his country. It came from the name of the head of the Norwegian ‘government’ at the time, Vidkun Quisling, when the country was under Nazi occupation.
When our current government collaborates with an occupying power, what term might be applied to it?
Imagine for a moment you are a market trader. You are from just north of Chester and you’re on your way to a market that day in the nearby coastal town of Flint. The back of your small van is piled high with sacks of potatoes you bought the previous evening from a local farmer whose reputation for quality produce is renowned.
It’s early and the traffic is light. You’re enjoying some music on a local radio station and all is well with the world when you round a bend and suddenly find yourself being flagged down by a man in uniform. Ahead of you, you can see barriers across the road, with some concrete buildings and a big sign saying ‘CUSTOMS’. The uniformed officer asks you your business and then asks for your paperwork.
“Paperwork? What paperwork, Officer?”
The Officer sighs and says:
“Your customs export number for a start. I see you’re exporting potatoes, so you’ll have to be compliant not only with EU Regulation 2023/1128 but naturally with the international SPS border formalities under EU Regulation 2023/1231. Then I'll need to see confirmation you're registered with the Trusted Trader scheme. I'm also concerned because I can't see any 'Not for EU' labels on your potatoes. I hope you realise you're liable if any goods end up in the Republic, Sir? To use the alternative border you have to declare the goods will not go into the Republic which is hard for many businesses to do.”
He pauses when he sees the look on your face. “I think you’d better step out of the van please, Sir, and follow me.”
“EU regulations?” you mutter, as you get out of your van. “A Quisling, that’s what you are.”
15 months later you are finally released from prison, having been convicted of offending the Officer with a Non-Crime Hate Incident, having called him a Quisling (and after one of his colleagues had looked up the word in Google...).
You were making a short trip within the UK – how can you be crossing an international border?
In our fictitious example – and for those unfamiliar with the geography in that part of the country – Chester is in England and Flint is a small town on the northern Welsh coast. England and Wales (and Scotland) are both part of the UK and as such they are part of the UK’s Internal Market. There is no international border, quite naturally. The product in this case, potatoes, can pass from the English part to the Welsh part of the country without any need for a customs number or indeed any other paperwork.
If you try the same thing and attempt to pass goods from GB to Northern Ireland, however, you are crossing an international trade border. The EU treats any product from Great Britain as coming from a ‘Third’ (i.e. foreign) country. You are subject to border checks and to full compliance with the relevant EU laws and regulations.
The EU's flimsy excuse for imposing its laws on part of the UK
The EU claimed that it had to impose a sea border between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK in order "to protect the EU Single Market". Below is the reality of the size of this 'threat'.

When is a guarantee not a guarantee? When it originates from our current Government, it seems
The letter today from Jim Allister KC MP to the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland concerns the Government’s so-called ‘Internal Market Guarantee’. Ostensibly this is supposed to reassure the British people that there continues to be a single internal market within the UK. The great deception involved here, however, is that this guarantee fails on two levels.
Firstly, it only guarantees that 80% of goods trade is using the ‘alternative trade border mechanism’ which simplifies an otherwise cumbersome regime. Crucially it does not eliminate it and still requires traders to go through a lot of administrative hurdles to use this method.
Secondly, and equally crucially, for 80% of goods trade to be inconvenienced to a lesser degree is hardly the 100% guarantee that the UK’s single market is intact, as the public have the right to expect. It immediately implies that 20% of goods trade is being inconvenienced to a much greater degree, which is indeed the case.
To compound the deception, the Government has set up an ‘Independent Monitoring Panel’ to report every six months on whether this 80% target is being met. This Panel is supposed to provide the public with some form of reassurance. Unfortunately even if it does say that the Government’s targets are being met, all it would be doing is saying that all British businesses are being inconvenienced by it, to one degree or another.
To add insult to injury, the first reporting period for the Independent Monitoring Panel ended on 30 June. Three months later and its report has still not been released.
Observations
Jim Allister KC MP has referred to the Government’s behaviour as a great deception of the British people and we consider this to be a fair assessment. We are grateful to him and to his staff for advance sight of his letter to Hilary Benn and of other papers.
When more than half the Cabinet have described Nigel Farage as a fascist, it seemed appropriate to look at what is happening to the sovereignty of the United Kingdom as a whole, through the same historical prism of wartime epithets.
The enthusiasm with which the Prime Minister and his colleagues have embraced greater and greater collaboration with the EU is deeply troubling. To use the term ‘collaborators’ for them does not seem inappropriate when looking at what has happened to what is supposed to be an integral part of the United Kingdom. How is it remotely possible to accept foreign laws governing a sovereign part of the United Kingdom? How is it possible to accept that Great Britain is considered to be a ‘Third Country’, meaning foreign country, by Northern Ireland’s EU-imposed laws when dealing with trade within the UK’s single market?
And finally, how can Sir Keir Starmer regard himself as Prime Minister of one of the greatest and oldest democracies in the World when nearly two million of its citizens are governed by laws over which they have no say and no vote?
In such circumstances, the term ‘Quisling’ might even be deemed to be mild, compared to the terms that have been used to describe a man (Nigel Farage) whose very existence dominated the entirety of the Labour Party’s conference.
