Leaving the ECHR tops survey for all those questioned about sovereignty

However, this poll contains some surprises

For all who responded, 77% considered sovereignty to be an issue of ‘paramount importance’ for them

An online poll run by Stand for Our Sovereignty (SOS), the major new campaign group on all matters related to the sovereignty of the UK, has shown that leaving the ECHR and other supranational bodies is easily the most important choice.

Presented with four possible answers, those who responded placed leaving the ECHR – and other bodies with international control over the UK such as the UN and WHO – as the number one issue. This was followed by being free of any EU interference, having sovereignty over the UK’s overseas assets, and finally having sovereignty over the UK’s waters. The full results are below.

Commenting, Stand for Our Sovereignty’s Executive Chairman said:

“Our first survey of public opinion produced some results we might have expected but it also delivered some surprises. The clear takeaway is that leaving the ECHR is top of the agenda for the majority. This will no doubt come as a disappointment to James Cleverley, the newest member of Kemi Badenoch’s shadow cabinet who favours staying in it and trying to persuade all the other 45 members to agree changes.
“It also vindicates the position of Reform UK, whose policy is very clearly that the UK should leave forthwith, and it explains the popularity of the piece we ran on Suella Braverman’s report last week for The Prosperity Institute.”

The SOS National Sovereignty Survey

The Stand for Our Sovereignty (SOS) online poll was conducted over two weeks between 12-27 July and was open to all. It was advertised extensively on the internet channels of many different organisations, using their websites, WhatsApp groups, ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), and Facebook. The information about it was then re-posted by a significant number of people and was seen by many tens of thousands, in an effort to get as broad a view as possible. These include all those who are diametrically opposed to the views of most of these groups.

As with all such surveys, the organisers faced difficult choices between the number of questions and possible answers, and the need to keep the survey relatively short to encourage more people to participate. Very short online surveys presenting a binary choice with one box to tick are very common and attract large responses, but this poll required people to come to this website and answer six questions with multiple answers possible.

In adopting this approach, they were able to obtain information more useful to the organisation as well as to the politicians who have endorsed SOS.

The results

The survey produced a lot of data, as well as a significant number of comments from the public. Below we are showing the main results.

1. The No.1 sovereignty issue in the UK

The public were faced with having to choose one out of four choices as their No.1 concern.

Question: “From the choices, which sovereignty is No.1 for you?”
Winner: “Sovereignty over supranational bodies (ECHR, ICC, UN, WHO, etc)”

2. The most important sovereignty concerns, using a ‘PR’ method

Given that many respondents found it difficult to choose between issues they considered to be of equal importance, below we are showing the results produced by adopting a very basic form of proportional representation. This shows the relative importance of each concern when the second, third and fourth choices are taken into account.

3. The importance of sovereignty overall

Question: “How important is UK sovereignty to you?”
Winner: “Of paramount importance”

4. Real engagement – Membership of Stand for Our Sovereignty

Finally, SOS asked about respondents’ views on joining and supporting its organisation. Whilst this may sound like a question of interest only to the Stand for Our Sovereignty team, it is not. We comment on the reasons for this question below the chart.

Question: “If you are not yet a member, why not?”
Winner: “Insufficient income”

A message to Facts4EU readers from the Stand for Our Sovereignty team

If Stand for Our Sovereignty is to fulfil its aims and objectives, and act to slow down and even halt some of the worst excesses of this government in giving away British sovereignty, then it requires a proper organisation, with a certain number of staff. We have the most experienced individuals in the independence space ready to start work, but they can’t afford to give up paid work and work for nothing, as readers will understand. The organisation will also have many other costs around internet services, and the usual costs of running any enterprise such as accountants, etc.

The chart above indicates the problem. Despite everyone being adamant that fighting back for the UK’s sovereignty is vital, only 11% of respondents were Members. Of the 13.4% who said they would join after completing the survey, less than one-third actually did. Unless we can persuade thousands that paying the equivalent of 3p a day is a small price to pay for a superbly professional and effective organisation working all hours on their behalf, then we have a real problem. We can only ask you to look at the Home and 'About Us' pages and decide if we are worth backing. If so, then please act today and join us on this campaign.

5. Respondents’ general comments

In addition to the prescribed questions, SOS wished to give all respondents a chance to express their opinions without any direct questioning. This produced some very interesting results. One aspect of these is mentioned in our Observations below, and we will return to the question of the comments we received as soon as we have time to do so.

Observations

This survey only closed at midnight two nights ago (27 July 2025) and therefore the results are still being analysed. Above are the main findings, but the SOS team will continue to assess all the information collected.

This survey will be dismissed by all globalists as it was directed principally at those for whom sovereignty is some form of concern. We already know that the majority of people are very concerned about sovereignty so this poll was looking at these people’s priorities.

It might have been expected that freedom from any EU interference would have topped the poll for the No.1 concern, but this went to the answer which included the ECHR as the first in its list of examples of supranational interference. Before any Rejoiners rejoice, however, we received a lot of comments to the final question, where respondents could say anything they wanted.

Many of these comments said they put leaving the ECHR on a par with leaving the EU’s orbit, but that if the UK were no longer a member of the ECHR then it could not be a member of the EU. Hence they put the ECHR answer as their No.1 and being free of the EU as their No.2.

The problem here, of course, is that the current government are engaged in an accelerating alignment with all EU laws and regulations, without actually rejoining the EU. Sir Keir seems happy to pay the EU to be under its rules, without any say over them whatsoever.

This survey would be like going Anfield Stadium and asking who supports Liverpool.

On Friday Facts4EU ran a piece “As the UK takes Afghans in, Germany is flying them out
Berlin deported 81 Afghans by plane back to their home country in the last week”. This was the second flight of migrants to Afghanistan from Germany and proves that leaving ECHR is not necessary.

There's no need to leave the ECHR. If there was a political will to stop the migrants they would do it.
But it is absolutely obvious they have no wish whatsoever to stop the migrants.

All this could be resolved using the legislation itself !

Why oh why is the Govt. not debating that the UK (and European) predicament with the ECHR could be resolved from within the convention itself (article 15) along with 1951 Refugee Convention article 9? Derogation in times of Emergency.

Maybe with the very real threat to national security, the amount of parliamentary time, political upheaval, economic concern, housing, crime, personal safety, social unrest and concern about an overall threatening cultural change in the UK, that the immigration issue comes within Article 15.

If Germany is deporting Afghans it is doing this illegally and just ignoring the ECHR.

In January of this year the ECHR confirmed a new case law that stated all foreigners deported from member states had a right to return to the EU. The case law prohibits any European country from permanently expelling anyone from European soil, even the worst criminals. Denmark requested to appeal this decision but this was refused. The Danish Government said at the time that "this raises grave and serious questions regarding a sovereign states sovereign right to control entry, residence and deportation of non-nationals."

I am sceptical that 66.1% say they have insufficient income to pay £12/year for membership of ‘Stand for our Sovereignty’.
My guess is that they are actually part of the 7.9% who say that they don’t see the value in paying for Facts4EU’s work.
