Yet the Government has set up a Working Group on ‘Islamophobia/Anti-Muslim Hatred’

Readers will recently have become aware of a Government initiative to produce a “a working definition” of ‘Islamophobia/Anti-Muslim hatred’. Yesterday Facts4EU was given a letter drafted by one of the authors in the House of Lords of a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Working Group set up to produce this definition.

The Government – specifically Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner - announced the setting up of this ‘Working Group’ on 28 February 2025 and laid out its justification.

Deputy Prime Minister, Angela Rayner, said:

“The rise in anti-Muslim hate crime is unacceptable and has no place in our society.

“That’s why we’ve committed to defining Anti-Muslim Hatred/Islamophobia, as a crucial step forward in tackling it and creating a society where everyone feels safe and welcome.”

‘The group will be chaired by Dominic Grieve KC, bringing his years of legal and government expertise to the role,’ said the Department.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government stated :

“Incidents of hate crime and Islamophobia are at record high in England and Wales – as set out in recent government statistics.”

The problem is that “hate crime” has fallen for the last two years and the statistics are a complete nonsense

We deal in official statistics every day of the week and have done for almost 10 years now. We venture to suggest we know a thing or two about analysing and interpreting them.

Firstly we will present the government’s latest statistics for readers and then in Part II of this report we will have something surprising and unique on this subject.

Brexit Facts4EU.Org Summary

1. Total number of ‘hate crimes’ recorded by police have fallen
– they are not at “an all-time high”

  • 2021/22 : 155,841
  • 2022/23 : 147,645
  • 2023/24: 140,562

“The proportion of hate crimes that were perceived to be racially motivated in nature has steadily decreased from 85% in the year ending March 2013 to 70% in the latest year.”

2. Muslim versus Jewish and other religious hate crimes

“Annually, there were 3,282 religious hate crimes targeted at Jewish people in the year ending March 2024, more than double the number recorded the previous year (1,543).”

“There was also an increase in religious hate crimes targeted against Muslims since the beginning of the Israel-Hamas conflict, with 3,866 offences in the latest year, up 13% from 3,432 recorded the previous year.”

So the number of hate crime incidents recorded against Jewish people more than doubled, whereas those against Muslim people rose by 13%. However, what is even more important than numbers and percentage increases is the effect on the relative populations of each group. Below are the statistics that matter, as felt by each community.

“Information on religious hate crimes can also be presented based on rates per population, using estimates from the 2021 Census. In the last year, there were 121 religious hate crimes per 10,000 population targeted at Jewish people, the highest rate for any religious group, and up from 57 per 10,000 the previous year. The next highest rate was for hate crimes targeted at Muslims, with 10 per 10,000 population, up from 9 per 10,000. ‘Other religion’ had a rate of 14 religious hate crimes per 10,000 population.”

  • Against Jews: 121
  • Other religions: 14
  • Against Muslims: 10

Angela Rayner’s Working Group on Islamophobia/Anti-Muslim hatred

There are so many things wrong with this group that it would take too long to list the problems here.

Instead we recommend readers study the letter sent yesterday by more than 30 Peers to its Chairman, the Arch-Remainer Dominic Grieve, who was responsible for some of the most egregious affronts to democracy in recent Parliamentary times as he attempted to overturn the result of the largest British electoral vote in history.

Observations

Tomorrow we will look at ‘hate crime’ in more detail. Today’s report clearly shows that this initiative by the Government was politically motivated, worried as they are about the number of independent Muslim MPs who were able to defeat Labour candidates at the last election.

More than eight years ago – long before the advent of organisations such as Lord Toby Young’s Free Speech Union - Facts4EU was speaking out strongly on the subject. As on many issues, we were perhaps well ahead of the curve. Readers might want to imagine how different things might be now, if we had received the funding of some other groups to highlight and influence highly disturbing trends in the direction of our country.
