In a video Facts4EU has uncovered, Lord Cameron is revealed in 2009 telling the British people quite categorically that the EU’s latest proposed treaty (the Lisbon Treaty) was a massive power grab by the EU. It was the Lisbon Treaty which established the ‘European Union’ for the first time and gave it its own legal identity.

Lord Cameron was clear that the then Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, must offer a referendum on this question because the EU’s new Treaty would mean an enormous loss of sovereignty for the United Kingdom. He described this as “a massive transfer of powers”.

He even quantified the damage to the British voters’ ability to choose a party with policies they would want to vote for in future, saying: “It ends our veto in about 60 areas.”

The man who told us all to vote Remain

Back in 2009 David Cameron was the leader of the Conservative party in Opposition and an aspiring Prime Minister. As such he had no hesitation in telling the British people what the EU had become, compared to the ‘trading bloc’ which former Prime Minister Edward Heath told the people he had signed up to, without giving them a vote on the matter.

As readers will note, this is the polar opposite of what he was to tell the British people in the EU Referendum campaign of 2016.

In the end the British people were never asked to vote on the EU’s Lisbon Treaty – effectively its new Constitution. Nevertheless it passed into law, transferring massive powers from the UK to Brussels as David Cameron confirms.

When David Cameron made this video, the Conservative Party still did not have its own YouTube channel. Instead it had something called ‘WebCameron’ which provided an occasional video of the Party’s leader either addressing the internet audience (as in the case below) or providing glimpses into the Camerons’ life. The latter might include what his wife Samantha was doing at home, or Lord Cameron having a snowball fight with Carol Vorderman of Countdown fame.

When the Party did set up its own YouTube Channel, the earlier work by Lord Cameron started to disappear from YouTube, until eventually it was wiped by the Party from all servers and even web archive services. Fortunately Facts4EU has copies of some videos like these – as well as having taken copies of significant videos of House of Commons Committee proceedings which have mysteriously become hard to find.

Ironically, one of the latter also involves Lord Cameron – this time being forensically examined over the deal he was doing with Spain over Gibraltar – a deal which has been resurrected by the current Foreign Secretary, David Lammy. We suspect this video may also have historical significance in the not too distant future. We have retained a copy of this especially for Sir Bill Cash, former Chairman of the European Scrutiny Committee at his request, after Sir Keir Starmer abolished the Committee in his first month in office.

How was it that Arch-Remainer Lord Cameron was so Eurosceptic in 2009?

Facts4EU has looked at the timeline of events surrounding this special broadcast. It was shown just before the EU Parliament elections that year. This was at a time when Nigel Farage’s UKIP had become a serious threat, long before they transformed into the Brexit Party and now Reform UK.

In the event, in 2009 the Conservatives won, but UKIP put Labour into third place.

The Remainer (then apparently Eurosceptic) David Cameron was successful in seeing off the threat from Nigel Farage in terms of vote share, but that was the last time. At the next European elections in 2014 the Conservatives were easily beaten by Mr Farage’s UKIP. This was before the emergence of the Brexit Party which in 2019 easily beat both the two main parties for the first time in any British national election.

Observations

Within a few months of publishing that video, Lord Cameron had dropped his vigorous campaign for a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty. Instead he went into the next general election promising a referendum on any future handover of UK sovereignty to the newly-formed EU.

Regarding the all-important Lisbon Treaty about which he had railed in his video, however, this was simply accepted and the British people were never to have any say about it.

This was despite the fact that the Treaty had radically transformed any notions of national sovereignty and involved “a massive transfer of powers” to Brussels. It was to take a further six years before the British people were finally able to say what they thought in the EU Referendum of 2016, when they decided by the largest vote in British electoral history to leave the European Union completely.

Those were the days: when UK politicians blamed all our woes on the EU. And we believed it.
Now, having left the EU, it turns out our own ‘Blob’ was to blame all along.
We need reform, and we need it now.

David Cameron wanted to emulate Margaret Thatcher but she had bigger ones. David Cameron held a referendum to end the infighting within the Cons Party and concern about UKIP, ironically the Eurosceptics within the Cons have now destroyed the reputation of the Cons over Brexit.

DC held the ref because of the rise of UKIP and Nigel. As with many issues, Nigel will distance himself from them, "it wasn't me Gov" but Brexit is his! The ref was to defend against UKIP, the landslide 2019 election was won by Boris because Nigel stepped aside. Yet Nigel admits Brexit has failed but conveniently because it hasn't been done properly. A handy stance when you've pushed for something but avoided direct contact with it.

Brexit was always going to be more complicated than was made out and we have got the Brexit we were always going to get, largely because of Northern Ireland and UK/EU Trade.

I am never quite sure what you actually want with your constant moans about Brexit. Even the ECB is admitting that their "value-based trade policy" has completely failed. According to the ECB all they have managed to achieve is to reduce the global importance of the EU and their policies have allowed dictatorships to profit form this, grow and fund their military expansion. The EU's idealistic policies have made them completely dependant on dictatorships and this has helped to increase geopolitical risk.

Recent events have shown that in Ukraine and the Middle East the EU has become totally irrelevant. For the Middle East conflict EU ministers and David Lammy fooled themselves into believing they were important but the reality is they were just being used as decoys. People normally use plastic ducks for this.

It's no longer about Brexit it's about the UK's place in the world. Since we left the EU's mutual liabilities and memberships costs have soared to ridiculous levels. At the same time their share of global output has declined to 13.4% and is expected to continue declining. The only reason we have a disproportionate level of trade with the EU is because they have always prevented the UK from developing trade links with the rest of the world. The 86.6% of non-eu global output is where the opportunity is for for the UK's future. To take advantage of this we need to be a Sovereign Nation. This will allow the UK to put UK interests fists and this will create economic growth. I am sure David Cameron realised this in 2009.

Using percentages that way is misleading. Countries in the far east have developed and grown significantly over the last few decades from a low base. Look at the make, design and quality of cars on the road. Where is your TV from or the clothes you’re wearing.

It is not misleading at all ! The non-eu share of global output is 86.6% and this is where the opportunities are for the UK. The USA share of Global output has been maintained while the EU's has declined rapidly in the last 25 years. The EU has failed to adapt to a changing world and they have been left behind by technology advances. You may try to deny this but EU ministers fully accept this.

As the ECB has said their attempts to force their values onto the world and pursue ideological policies has failed the citizens of the EU while EU politicians have made their own lives very lucrative. I am fully aware of where products are manufactured I pointed this out you a long time ago when you where claiming that trade was all about the distance from your trading partners..

For me, it's a real positive that our (useless!!) politicians can no longer blame the EU for their failings. It means we can understand what they do and don't do, and vote them out accordingly!

If, as I believe is the case, we keep doing this, then the politicians WILL get wise to this and start making sure that the civil service do what we expect of them. It is, after all, our right as taxpayers to expect an acceptable use of our money!!

Whilst I believe that the 'establishment' are the real cause of this country's problems, only the politicians can actually DO something about it. And until they do do something about it, they're going to have very short careers in power.

The (fake) tories found this out, liebour have started to find this out, and Reform had better learn this if they are going to win power in 2029 (or before, as I can't see 2TK or liebour managing to hold on until then!!).

Apart from all its other dreadful failings, the EU giving fake cover to useless politicians was the worst thing about it. As much as 2tier and 2tears try to meld us back in to the crumbling mess, I do believe that the future is positive!!

And thank the Gods we did - it could have been BRINO at Theresa May's first aborted backstop.
That Brexit has given us freedoms that we've unused is our own fault.
The news that Starmer is overtly trying to row back into the EU with his aspirational tosh of a reset it st least now acknowledged - a future democratic non uni party government is likely to go back to Brexit status.
It will be interesting to see what remains of the Windsor Framework too - it's not looking bright currently.
