Facts4EU deconstructs the Government’s speeches last week and raises the alarm for Brexiteers
Three senior members of the government – PM Sir Keir Starmer, Deputy PM David Lammy, and Health Secretary Wes Streeting – all made speeches last week claiming it was clear the UK doesn’t work outside the EU. As it was a Manifesto promise to accept Brexit, the PM didn’t actually say anything about rejoining the EU, its Customs Union or Single Market.
All three did, however, make the Government’s feelings perfectly clear about the UK’s unacceptable position in respect of Brexit. Facts4EU provides excerpts of the relevant parts of the speeches before commenting on these in our ‘Observations’ below. We have, however, emboldened and underlined certain key phrases.
1. The Prime Minister, the Rt Hon Sir Keir Starmer MP
1. a) Firstly, in a press conference voicing his support for Rachel Reeves’ budget, Sir Keir said it was time to
“confront the reality that the Brexit deal we have significantly hurt our economy.”
1. b) Then in the evening amid the grandeur of the Guildhall in London, Sir Keir gave his speech to the Lady Mayor’s Banquet in which he talked of the following:
Mansion House, London
“We were of one mind that Britain should be outward looking, engaged and active on the world stage, a powerful voice at the top table… But then Brexit broke that consensus… We are still dealing with the consequences today, in our economy, and in trust...”
“The idea that leaving the EU was the answer to all our cares and concerns has clearly been proved wrong… To consider Brexit a template for our future foreign policy is utterly reckless.”
“It is an attitude of total impunity that says: Insult our neighbours. Sever our alliances. Choose between the EU and the US. Sever links with China.”
“My Lady Mayor, in these times, internationalism is patriotism.”
- The Prime Minister, 01 Dec 2025
2. The Rt Hon David Lammy MP, Deputy Prime Minister
Next we have David Lammy, Deputy Prime Minister, Justice Secretary and Lord Chancellor. He was interviewed on a new podcast called “The NewsAgents” by former BBC Newsnight presenters Emily Maitlis and Jon Sopel, both obvious Rejoiners. The episode was called “Is Labour ready to reopen the Brexit debate?”
“It’s self-evident that leaving the European Union badly damaged our economy, took us out of an important marketplace and created serious friction, that untruths were being peddled by those that thought leaving the European Union would be a good thing. It’s why every single day that I was Foreign Secretary I returned to the subject of our relationship…”
“Our future is absolutely, absolutely inextricably linked to the European Union and we should be working over time to be closer. That’s my view and that has not changed.”
It was then strongly suggested to Mr Lammy that a large part of the public just wanted Labour to abandon Brexit and say it was going to go further than just aligning closely with the EU or simply joining the Customs Union. He was asked if Labour was terrified of saying its “next move is to get rid of Brexit.”
The Deputy Prime Minister denied Labour was terrified of saying this, telling Emily Maitlis instead that “It was important we got on with public services and done [sic] things. But, BUT, the damage to our economy is real, and pragmatically it was certainly my belief, and what I was working for was… to fix things… That journey of travel was self-evident.”
- Deputy Prime Minister, 04 Dec 2025
A total of eight times he was given the opportunity to deny he wanted to rejoin the Customs Union but failed to do so. And yet it is official Labour Party policy to accept Brexit and not to join either the Customs Union or the Single Market. It was on this basis that they were elected. There was much merriment when David Lammy was pressed on the question towards to the end, and the Deputy Prime Minister left his audience in no doubt that he would like Party policy to be to rejoin the EU.

Don't leave this to someone else. You are that 'someone else'.
3. The Rt Hon Wes Streeting MP, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care
Finally we come to Wes Streeting, Secretary of State. He has been an MP since 2015 and was given the Health portfolio by Sir Keir Starmer at the last election. He has the lowest majority of all Ministers (528) thanks to the high Muslim vote in his constituency. His boyfriend also stood in 2024 but was defeated.
When he was asked whether the Government would be taking Britain back in to the EU, his reply was the less than convincing:
“I don’t think so.”
He then went on to give his further observations on the UK’s Brexit status:
“I think we are looking at a new relationship with the European Union in which we want to both repair some of the economic damage done by Brexit, which I think is evident, [and] was warned about in advance of the referendum.
"And the country, I think largely for reasons of sovereignty and as the Brexit campaign slogan said, to take back control, people were warned about the economic harm.
“And there were lots of voters I spoke to who said, yeah we get that, but I think it's worth it to take back control. Well, that's happened now.
“There is economic damage. And we want to both minimise that damage, but also I think get this country onto a better partnership with the European Union.”
He was then asked, like David Lammy, about the Customs Union, and like the Deputy Prime Minister he declined to answer:
“I think it's about new partnerships and new relationships...Not relitigating the past. And that's where we want to be. We're a European country. Our interests are intertwined with Europe on defence and security, on the economy and on our values. And so we want to make sure that we are building the strongest possible alliance with the European Union, recognising and respecting the decision made by the British people in 2016.”
Observations
To have three senior members of the Government, including the Prime Minister, speaking four times in five days about Brexit in such disparaging terms should be alarming for all those who value the independence we fought so hard to win.
Before moving on specifically to Brexit, we must pick up the Prime Minister for the last thing he said at his Mansion House speech: “My Lady Mayor, in these times, internationalism is patriotism.” Whichever planet the PM lives on, it isn't ours. By definition this is not true, except perhaps in the hallowed world of international human rights lawyers, of which of course Sir Keir was one. This statement alone goes a long way to explaining why the PM is so out of touch with the rest of the country.
Turning to Brexit, the Government was elected on the basis it had accepted it. This extends further than the question of rejoining the Single Market or Customs Union. It was an acceptance that the Brexit Referendum had happened, and that – despite all the efforts of virtually every Labour MP – the UK had left the EU.
They started with the small pieces of legislation slipped through on relatively boring matters, which aligned us to EU standards, and then became the ‘EU Reset’ where Sir Keir gave away the UK’s fishing rights over its waters for 12 years for nothing in return.
Facts4EU really raised the alarm early this year over the product standards affecting the car industry and our messaging hit over 600,000 voters.
We are now raising the alarm flags once again. In just one week we have had three senior Government Ministers including its leader describing the UK’s independence as extremely damaging. This marks a significant move from its early days of “Brexit is done, we accept it”. We predict it will move as fast as it can to align the UK so closely to the EU that its trade deals will be next to worthless and we might as well be in the EU as a Member.
It’s a shame we won’t be around to fight that battle with facts destroying their case.
