"Australians MUST be given a say on immigration – the Politicians have FAILED us," say Australians for Better Government
Questions are now being asked about the government’s lax ideas of immigration – as in the UK

A message from an Australian organisation to government, with resonance in the UK
Following the tragedy that took place at Bondi Beach on Sunday, Facts4EU has received the following guest piece by colleagues in Australia. Given many of the similarities between the problems being faced by both countries, both with unpopular Labour Prime Ministers, we thought our readers might be interested in what our colleagues down-under have to say.
To provide some context, Facts4EU has first looked at Australia’s data for immigration and for its foreign-born population.
Permanent Immigration into Australia, 2001-2021 - Key statistics
In August 2021:
- There were 3.0 million permanent migrants in Australia who arrived since 2000
- To provide context for UK readers, Australia’s population in 2021 was only 27.4 million
- India was the top country of birth among permanent migrants (439,700 people)
- 58% were primary applicants – the remainder were secondary (e.g. family members)
In short, Australia has seen immigration at much higher and faster levels than the UK.
Australia's population by country of birth
- At 30 June 2024, Australia’s population was 27,376,000.
- This population included 8.6 million people who were born overseas.
- The proportion of Australia's population born outside Australia was 31.5%.
- This is almost double that of the United Kingdom (17.1%).
- England, India, China and New Zealand were the countries of birth with the largest populations.
- Those born in India recorded the largest increase since 2014.
The chart below shows the growth in the foreign-born population

Bondi Beach, Sydney
Bondi Beach is in Sydney, New South Wales (NSW). Whilst it is not the federal capital, (that’s Canberra), Sydney is the largest city. Like London it has a more cosmopolitan feel to the population and its composition is different, with Lebanon and Iraq appearing in its Top 10 of foreign-born population. No Arab country appears in the country-wide statistics.

Australians for Better Government calls for the Australian people to be given the power to set immigration levels

In reaction to Sunday’s horrific terrorist incident at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach, in which innocent lives were tragically lost, Australians for Better Government (ABG) is calling for public plebiscites to determine Australia’s immigration intake.
Here is their President, Steven Tripp:
“ABG is loathed to politicise the tragic shooting at Bondi Beach on Sunday,” announced ABG President Steven Tripp. “But unfortunately, the incident is a clear failure of Governance.”
“For decades both sides of politics have embraced multiculturalism and mass immigration. Unfortunately, these policies have consequences.” Mr. Tripp added. “Sunday’s shooting is evidence that mixing cultures connected to overseas conflicts is one of those consequences. We have paid the price of bringing these conflicts to our shores.”

Mr. Tripp’s comments echo ABG’s long-standing view that certain decisions must be made by the Australian people, not politicians. Under ABG’s proposal, immigration intake, the signing of international treaties, and the raising of debt ceilings, among other issues, would require successful public plebiscites before being enacted.
Under ABG’s plan, the Australian people would define the appropriate annual immigration level. As such, plebiscites would be required by Government to set or change the level of immigration intake.
“Plebiscites will allow the Australian people to decide whether they accept the consequences of multicultural policies and mass immigration?” Mr. Tripp announced. “The Australian people have never been asked whether our immigration levels are appropriate.”
Adding to Mr. Tripp’s comments, ABG Vice-President Toni Bowyer said:
“For decades, Government has compounded Australia’s national security risks for the sake of virtual signalling and suicidal empathy.
“The tragic events we saw on Sunday are no longer unthinkable. The warning signs of cultural tensions have been ignored. Yet, we suspect there will be no accountability for the Governments that opened our borders to these cultural conflicts,” Ms. Bowyer added.

Speaking from his hometown of Sydney where the shooting took place, Mr. Tripp added:
“The graphic display of cultural tensions on Sunday has been imported to Australia without the consent of the Australian people. Some Australians may accept this as a trade-off for the many positive aspects that diverse cultures bring to our society, while other Australians may not.
“The view of ABG is clear – the decision of appropriate intake must be put to the Australian people before any further immigration is to take place. As with so many issues, the politicians need to get out of the way, and the Australian people need a greater say.”
Observations
We are grateful to our colleagues at Australians for Better Government for sending us their thoughts about the background to the awful tragedy on Sunday. We know it came as a deep shock to their President in particular, as he lives only a very short distance from Bondi. Naturally our hearts go out to the families and friends of those murdered and injured, as well as to all Australians we know, of whatever faith, who have all been affected by this atrocity.
