Lucy Connolly versus Nigel Farage and Zia Yusuf – which video is the most important?

One describes an authoritarian Britain, the other a dysfunctional Britain in crisis

If you hadn’t seen either of these videos, which is the more important to watch?

When we do our traditional Review of the Year 2025, we wonder which of these stories will outrank the other. It is of course possible that neither will make our Top 10, as we base our rankings on which stories came to the attention of the largest number of people online.

Whatever the outcome, we are curious what our readers think about the importance of the issues covered in each of the videos below. If we had to try to characterise them, we would describe them as follows:

  • The Lucy Connolly interview is about freedom of speech, the rule of law, and authoritarianism
  • The Reform UK video is about the immigration crisis and how a political party would finally resolve it

The impact of any changes brought about by the campaigning of one woman against injustice – if there is one – will be relatively difficult to see in terms of people’s everyday lives. The impact of a set of policy objectives on the issue of our time – immigration – will be more radical, if these proposals are enacted and if they are allowed to work.

Firstly we will give you the videos, and then a simple survey which we hope as many people as possible will answer.

Observations

Like most people we had been aware of Lucy Connelly’s situation, albeit not in forensic detail. When members of the team finally found time to watch the full interview, it was an eye-opener for everyone. The surprises start with the character and personality of the lady herself and continue through the extraordinary details of her story, which she recounts in such a matter-of-fact fashion.

Putting it simply, the members of the team who watched this video were appalled that such things could happen to such a person in Britain in the mid-2020s. Unfortunately all felt that the Prime Minister’s interference in the judicial process by his heavily-laden public remarks prior to Mrs Connelly’s court appearances and sentencing were completely unacceptable.

Reform UK’s plans to tackle immigration had been well-trailed in advance, but the announcements still contained some more detail, with some fairly strong rhetoric being used. The headline from it was generally the figure of 5-600,000 deportations in the term of the next parliament.
