A Facts4EU.Org snapshot of the latest positive trade data for Brexit Britain
On Friday (11 Oct 2024) the Office for National Statistics released its trade figures for August this year. These showed that total UK goods exports increased by £3.1 billion in August 2024 (+10.8% month-on-month), after the effect of inflation was removed.
Exports to both EU and non-EU countries rose substantially in both value and inflation-adjusted terms in August. Below we summarise the results, for those readers who still rely on the BBC for their news.

Goods exports generally – What are we selling, and to whom?
Exports to the EU increased by £1.4 billion (10.1%) in August 2024. This increase was because of a £0.6 billion rise in machinery and transport equipment exports and a £0.4 billion rise in chemical exports.
The rise in exports of machinery and transport equipment was because of increased exports of aircraft to Germany. The rise in chemical exports was because of increased exports of medicinal and pharmaceutical products to Belgium and Germany.
Exports to non-EU countries increased by £1.5 billion (10.4%) in August 2024. This was because of a £0.8 billion rise in exports of material manufactures, a £0.6 billion rise in exports of machinery and transport equipment, and a £0.3 billion rise in chemical exports.
The rise in exports of material manufactures was because of increased exports to India. The rise in exports of machinery and transport equipment was because of increased exports of mechanical machinery to China. The rise in chemical exports was because of increased exports of inorganic chemicals to the United States.
All trade figures in our report exclude non-monetary gold (NMG) and other precious metals. This is because movements in NMG, an important component of precious metals, can be large and highly volatile, distorting underlying trends in goods exports and imports.
Observations
It never seems to matter which trade figures we publish, Rejoiners always claim we have been selective in the date ranges we show. They seem to particularly dislike trade figures which show any good news for Brexit Britain.
In today’s report we have simply taken the four-year date range from the release by the ONS on Friday. If Rejoiners have a problem with this, they should address their criticisms to the ONS, not us.
