Here's why this event should make the national news

On 16 October 2024 in Parliament the Leader of the TUV Party, Jim Allister KC MP, presented a Bill to restore the sovereignty of the entirety of the United Kingdom, following the effective annexation of a part of the UK’s territory by a foreign power – the European Union – in 2019.

On Friday 06 December, five days after our event on Sunday (01 Dec), Jim Allister's Bill will be debated in the House of Commons. The Bill has been co-sponsored by Nigel Farage MP (Reform UK), the Rt Hon Sir Iain Duncan Smith MP (Conservative), Richard Tice MP (Reform UK), and Graham Stringer MP (Labour).

In addition to the above, all five DUP MPs are also co-sponsors of the Bill : Gregory Campbell MP, Carla Lockhart MP, Gavin Robinson MP, Jim Shannon MP, and Sammy Wilson MP. And to complete the Unionist line-up, the final two co-sponsors are Robin Swann MP (Ulster Unionist) and Alex Easton MP (Independent).

1.9m of our fellow citizens live under EU laws over which they have no say and no vote

Given the direction of travel of this Government, Jim Allister’s Private Member’s Bill to restore UK sovereignty in relation to Northern Ireland will place the fundamental issue of sovereignty front and centre once again, which is where it should be.

About our keynote speakers

First keynote speaker : Jim Allister KC MP

Jim Allister KC is the MP for North Antrim having previously represented the constituency in the Northern Ireland Assembly from 2011-2024. He represented Northern Ireland in the European Parliament from 2004-9.

A strong Unionist, Jim is an implacable opponent of the Irish Sea Border, a stand which was critical in seeing him returned to Parliament at the last election overturning one of the largest majorities in Northern Ireland to do so.

Jim lives with his wife Ruth in Co Antrim. The couple have three adult children.

Second keynote speaker : Dan Boucher

Dr Dan Boucher has a PhD in sovereignty and international relations. Author of The Big Society in a Small Country, he was until September 2021 a member of the Conservative Party and stood as a Conservative candidate in Wales.

Unable to reconcile himself with the Northern Ireland Protocol, he resigned from the Conservative Party and joined the DUP, subsequently becoming their Director of Policy. Dismayed by the 'Safeguarding the Union' deal that the DUP did with the UK government he resigned his position in April 2024.

Widely published in the Belfast Newsletter, Conservative Home, Facts4EU, Comment Central, and Brexit Central, he is writing a book on the impact of the Windsor Framework on the future of the United Kingdom.

With a deadline of 7 December and a vote expected toward the end of November, Northern Ireland's MLA's in Stormont will vote on and are expected to support continuing the current arrangement in the Windsor Framework. If it is voted through with a simple majority, the arrangements are extended for four years. If it wins cross-community support – which is a majority of unionists and a majority of nationalists – then it is extended for eight years. Jim Allister's bill will reach a second reading on 6 December and therefore a complete waste of time if MLA's support current arrangements. If a second reading does continue it will wither away as both Labour and the Conservatives supported the Windsor Framework.

The TUV and Jin Allister supported and pushed for Brexit, ignored the warnings about borders, trusted Boris Johnson when he said there would not be a border down the Irish Sea. Northern Ireland is the price of Brexit with the UK handing the region over to the EU. Over time the population of NI will ask themselves, what is the point of NI staying in the UK.

Perhaps the current situation will lead to an acceptance of Irish re-unification. Whilst this would be an unintended outcome of Brexit. Maybe it would be the best outcome?

2 OA. I believe reunification was already accepted as an inevitable outcome shortly after 2016 once the reality of leaving the EU set in. It was UK and Republic of Ireland being in the EU with open borders that pulled the rug from under the IRA which led to the Good Friday Agreement.

The future argument will be how to smudge retaining the title of UK without Northern Ireland, the full title of the UK (since 1922) is The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, without NI, UK becomes GB.

Even after 8 years there is a significant majority in Northern Ireland that want to remain in the UK. If there is a problem, which I doubt, I don't believe it's anything to do with Brexit, it's the EU's inability to govern itself.

The Republic of Ireland's prosperous, but very flaky, economy is going to look attractive to some people in Northern Ireland but over 50% of it comes from the ROI being the world's largest tax haven with a small population. The EU dislikes this strongly but even after 10 years of trying to stop it they have failed miserably and this has resulted in a considerable cost to other EU citizens. But things are starting to change and any tensions between the EU and the USA could bring this to an abrupt end.
