Last week the French President Emmanuel Macron visited the French university La Sorbonne to give a very long speech about ‘Europe’, meaning the EU. He gave such a speech at La Sorbonne seven years ago and some members of his audience must have felt as if he hadn’t stopped talking since then.

Just about the only thing Monsieur Macron didn’t recite was his weekly supermarket groceries list, although it’s possible we drifted off and it might well have been in there somewhere.

Courtesy of the Elysée Palace, below we present his speech on YouTube for readers who speak French, although we advise having a plentiful supply of espresso coffee to hand. And possibly some anti-depressants for when it’s over.

President Macron’s speech to La Sorbonne : “Discours sur l'Europe”, 24 Apr 2024

  • The EU needs ‘more EU’ or it will die, says Macron
  • Everything must be done centrally (but French farmers and industry must be excluded)
  • France loves the UK really (but nothing about taking back his illegal migrants)
  • The EU needs to borrow another €1 trillion – yes, really

About Emmanuel Macron

Emmanuel Macron became France's youngest-ever President in 2017 at the age of 39. He had previously worked as a senior civil servant at the Inspectorate General of Finances and later became an investment banker at Rothschilds. He was a member of the Socialist Party until leaving to set up his own party - 'En Marche' - and running for President.

Emmanuel Macron met his wife Brigitte Trogneux in Amiens when he was a 15 year-old schoolboy and when she was his drama teacher aged 39. They married in 2007 and his best man was Henry Hermand, a businessman who loaned almost £1/2 million to Macron for the purchase of his first apartment in Paris when the future President was Inspector of Finances.

Mme Macron has three children from her previous marriage but she and the French President have no children of their own. They live in the Elysée Palace with their dog Nemo.

Observations

We invite readers to imagine the British Prime Minister giving a speech this long. The Facts4EU.Org team like to believe they are pretty good when it comes to the art of précis, but this defeated us.

What we can say is that large parts of the speech - where President Macron talked about the EU’s achievements - belong in a Lewis Carroll fantasy novel. Over the last eight years we have published thousands of reports based on the EU’s own data which disprove what the French President was saying. His lengthy comments about vaccines and assistance to Ukraine come to mind.

Perhaps the most optimistic spin we can put on this is that this man will no longer be French President after their elections in 2027, as he can’t serve for more than two terms. The current favourite to replace him is Marine Le Pen of the ‘National Rally’ party, although a lot can happen in the next three years.
