Mass immigration and the UK’s political parties

In today’s report we make an attempt to provide a snapshot of one important topic of concern to voters. That topic is immigration and it's particularly relevant given the surge in support for Nigel Farage's Reform UK party in the latest Survation poll. We will report on this poll tomorrow.

The Facts4EU.Org team has reviewed the immigration policies of all the major UK political parties who have published manifestos for the general election on 04 July. We consider this to be a legitimate subject to explore, as mass immigration affects a great number of issues concerning ordinary people, including the following :-

Housing shortages
Pressures on schools
Pressures on GP practices
Pressures on hospitals
Pressures on all other local and public services
Benefit payments
Societal cohesion
Crime
Level of security threats
Overall GBP and GDP per person
Pressures on the transport network
Shortage of university places
And overall British values as a country

Put simply, it is not possible to permit an influx of millions of people into a country in a short number of years without increasing that country’s infrastructure in a proportionate way. In the case of the United Kingdom – and in the case of many other European countries – this hasn’t been done.

So how important is the topic of immigration to the major UK parties?

In order to give readers a measure of the importance which the UK’s major political parties have placed on immigration, we picked an arbitrary measure.

It should be noted that whilst the LibDem manifesto mentions immigration 14 times, the party is broadly in favour of welcoming a continuing influx into the UK.

Only one major political party has published specific pledges to cut immigration drastically and that is Reform UK. Here is part of what they say in their 'Contract':

"Freeze Non-Essential Immigration"
"Strict limits on immigration are the only way to relieve the pressure on our housing, public services, increase wages and protect our culture, identity and values. Essential skills, mainly around healthcare, must be the only exception."
"Stop the Boats with our 4 Point Plan"
"Leave the European Convention on Human Rights."
"Zero illegal immigrants to be resettled in the UK."
"New Department of Immigration."
"Pick up illegal migrants out of boats and take them back to France."
"Secure Detention for all Illegal Migrants"
"All asylum seekers that arrive illegally from safe countries will be processed rapidly, offshore if necessary. Those entering from a safe country will also be barred from claiming asylum or citizenship."
"No legal aid for non-citizens. Those rejected will be returned."

Observations

Of course we realise that our report is a simplification of the various parties’ views on immigration.

Nevertheless we felt this was an interesting take on the relative importance they appear to attach to a subject which has grown in intensity in the UK and in continental Europe in the last few years.

Tomorrow we will look at the impact this may be having on the popularity of each party.

What bothers me about the Reform 'contract' is the fact that when you read the 'contract' it does not explain 'how' the contract headlines will be achieved.
For example:
"Pick up illegal migrants out of boats and take them back to France"
How? Just how will Reform physically return the migrants? Do you think the French will welcome them back with open arms or blockade the ports in another hissy fit or will the case go too and fro the legal courts at infinitum?

Uncontrolled immigration is destroying England. Parts of Kent no longer appear English, more like African townships. The Scots and Welsh receive only a handful of the incomers (about 10% between them) so they revel in our destruction and offer no support.
No political party has the desire or will to end this. The exception being 'Reform' but due to our voting system, they will not win power. It will be a miracle if they win six seats.

To be expected that Reform has a bigger focus on migration. The topic that delivered Brexit but the electorate are more concerned about Cost of Living (see YouGov tracker).

A subject that requires more consideration than Nigels sweeping statements.

Housing shortages: An aging population and single occupancy homes through divorce etc have also put pressure on housing.
Schools: Governemnt National pupil projections show a 400,000 drop in nursery/primary school numbers between 2023 and 2028.
Health and Social care: The NHS would have collapsed but for the legal migration in the past few years, mainly from India and the far east. I believe that this is why the Cons permitted such high levels of legal migration.

There are always excuses to be rolled out by the 5th rate UK political class: as an engineer I meet many "can't doers." They are as a genus, contemptible and get swept away with the rest of the trash.

Simply doing a CTRL F searching for the word "immigration" in a document might not give you a fair idea.
The Green Manifesto has a whole section (pages 35-36) called "Sharing a Fairer Greener Welcome". They will end the so-called Hostile Environment and basically welcome all migrants (except dangerous individuals) with open arms. The migrants will get everything they want and be able to bring families with them.
The SNP has a similar outlook, which begs the question, why are we not sending all asylum seekers to Scotland ?

6 G. No it wasn’t, it was immigration (got a feeling this might go on for a while). See YouGov tracker of main issues of UK. Funny that Sovereignty doesn’t get mentioned by politicians any more, UK in a Changing Europe did a good analysis of UK/Brexit Sovereignty in Nov 2020.

6 Gazzablack … When Liz Truss wanted to change taxes and spending, pressure from the money markets forced her to do one U-turn after another. Eg we are not as sovereign as we think we are …

They were able to get traction, because the rejoiniacs within government were threatening. If she had the Tory Party behind her, she would have been able to ride it out. They are now paying the price for their disloyalty.
