Despite Ed Davey’s LibDems now languishing in fourth place in the latest polls - behind Nigel Farage’s accelerating Reform UK party - they are likely to win a significant number of seats in the general election.
Their well-established local electoral infrastructure has traditionally focused the party’s efforts on winnable seats in certain parts of the country. Given their past success with this strategy, it is therefore important for the public to know the party’s policies. Facts4EU.Org dissects the LibDem 2024 Manifesto in regard to the European Union.
The LibDem 2024 manifesto – ‘Vote LibDem, get the EU’
On Monday (10 Jun 2024) the LibDems published their 117-page manifesto for the UK General Election.Facts4EU.Org dissects the LibDem 2024 Manifesto in regard to the European Union. When it comes to our pro-Brexit campaign for a fully-free, sovereign, and independent trading nation, our conclusions below are clear : The LibDems would take us back into the European Union. As a non-partisan organisation we leave readers to make up their own minds about the LibDem’s other policies.
To avoid readers having to wade through all 117 pages, Facts4EU.Org is summarising below the party’s key policies relating to the European Union.

Key excerpts from the 2024 LibDem Manifesto regarding the UK and the EU
The full LibDem manifesto can be found here.
Below we have picked out just some of the many, many mentions of the EU in the LibDems' manifesto. Possibly the key one is this :-
”We would aim to place the UK-EU relationship on a more formal and stable footing by seeking to join the Single Market.”
It is important to be clear about this LibDem policy. Rejoining the Single Market would subject the entire UK to EU law, which the UK Parliament would have to accept, with no say for the British people whatsoever. Inevitably it would also mean adhering to EU trade rules, which means the EU's Customs Union. As the LibDems say below, this would require the UK to withdraw from all the excellent trade deals which the Dept for Business and Trade has been doing around the world.
Below are just a selection of some of the other LibDem quotes from its manifesto when talking about the EU.

“We will fix the UK’s broken relationship with Europe and tear down the Conservatives’ damaging barriers to trade.”
“Liberal Democrats are proud internationalists.”
“Liberal Democrats will immediately fix our broken relationship with Europe, forge a new partnership built on cooperation, not confrontation, and move to conclude a new comprehensive agreement that removes as many barriers to trade as possible.”
“We will champion the UK’s Human Rights Act and resist any attempts to weaken or repeal it.”
“Core to our economic policy for improving stability and growth will be … fixing the broken trading relationship with Europe”
“The Conservatives’ … botched Brexit deal has badly damaged the economy, leaving everyone worse off.”
“Repair the broken relationship with Europe, which acts as a brake on the economy and costs the UK investment, jobs and tax revenue.”
“The Conservatives’ botched deal with Europe has done enormous damage to British businesses, putting up new barriers to trade and creating reams of red tape. The UK has less clout in trade negotiations, the US is not interested, and the new trade deals the Conservatives have signed will undercut high environmental standards and hurt our farmers.”
“Working together with our European neighbours to tackle the climate emergency, including by associating the UK Emissions Trading System with the EU ETS.”
”Supporting science, research and innovation in universities, including continuing to participate in Horizon Europe and joining the European Innovation Council”
”Expand opportunities for young people to study, teach and volunteer abroad by returning to the [EU’s] Erasmus Plus programme as an associated country. “
”The Conservatives’ botched deal with the EU is also contributing to food shortages and high food prices, and severely damaging farmers’ and fishers’ ability to export to their main markets in Europe, while new trade deals undermine animal welfare and environmental protection, undercutting responsible British farmers and setting a dangerous precedent for future deals.”
”Renegotiating the Australia and New Zealand trade agreements in line with our objectives for health, environmental and animal welfare standards, withdrawing from them if that cannot be achieved.”
”At least matching the EU’s stricter rules on preventative use of antibiotics.”
”Scrap the Conservatives’ Illegal Migration Act and their Rwanda scheme, uphold the Refugee Convention”
”Expand the Youth Mobility Scheme by negotiating with the EU to extend it on a reciprocal basis”
”Protect the rights of EU citizens and their families in the UK by automatically granting full Settled Status to all those with Pre-Settled Status.”
”Defend hard-won British rights and freedoms by upholding the UK’s commitment to the European Convention on Human Rights and resisting any attempts to withdraw from it.”
”Seeking a defence and security agreement with the EU and its member states.”
”Rebuilding confidence through seeking to agree partnerships or associations with EU agencies and programmes such as the European Aviation Safety Agency, Erasmus Plus, scientific programmes, climate and environment initiatives, and cooperation on defence, security and crime.”
”… we would aim to place the UK-EU relationship on a more formal and stable footing by seeking to join the Single Market.”
Observations
Like so many ordinary people, we often wish our politicians could be more honest. The LibDems have always been extremist Remainer-Rejoiners. After 2016 they were at the heart of the repeated attempts in Parliament to overturn the largest democratic vote in British history - to leave the EU. The reason we have such a poor arrangement with the EU is because of people like them. They backed the Benn (surrender) Act which tied the Governnment's hands behind its back and prevented a clean Brexit.
They also campaigned vehemently for 'the People's Vote', (as did Labour's Keir Starmer), to overturn the Referendum result when we had already had one.
Six years later they still haven't accepted the decision of the British people. Regardless of any of their other extreme policies, for example on 'Net Zero' and 'the climate emergency', we must call them out on their stated intention to rejoin the EU's Single Market. This is nothing more than a route to rejoining the sclerotic and failing bloc that is the EU.
In a short summary such as this we will refrain from pointing out all the materially false statements in the LibDems' manifesto. We would simply direct them to all the official facts we have published in our thousands of reports.
Few people read manifestos, and especially not 117-page documents like that of the LibDems. The Facts4EU.Org team is reviewing all the main parties' manifestos, so that readers will have summaries. We hope this is useful.
