Facts4EU reveals the billions that migrants ‘repatriate’ to their home countries each year

On Thursday (25 Jan 2024) the EU published its figures for the value of ‘personal transfers’ from migrants to their home countries. These transfers sent by migrants in the EU to their home economies have grown continuously over the years.

In 2022 alone (the latest data available) these hit record outflows, totalling an astonishing €43.5 BILLION. This represents an increase of 13.9% in just one year (from €38.2 billion). In the previous 10 years an almost unbelievable €0.3 TRILLION has been sent back home by migrants.

Part One : The soaring numbers of migrants entering the EU each month
Part Two : The hundreds of billions being sent home by these migrants reaches record levels (This report)

Given the massive increase in the number of asylum seekers which we reported on yesterday, the monies being ‘repatriated’ will of course now be much larger. Today we can only report on the latest data available which runs up to 2022.

The quiet ‘wealth distribution’ by migrants from their hosts to their home countries

Without corresponding UK figures from HM Treasury or the ONS, Facts4EU.Org has used the latest data just published by the EU to give an indication of the amount of money gained in one form of another by migrants which is being ‘sent back home’.

The amounts – and the rate of increase – are mind-boggling.

Former Secretary of State The Rt Hon Sir John Redwood MP

“Facts4EU are right to remind us how relying on plenty of temporary migrant labour can lead to big outflows of cash as they send money to their former home countries. The UK has to borrow from abroad or sell assets to overseas buyers to cover the shortfall in our balance of payments. We also need to remember that low paid migrant jobs are cheap for the employer but dear for the taxpayer. We need to offer subsidised homes, benefit top-ups and free public services to them so they can afford to live here.”

- Sir John Redwood MP, commenting to Facts4EU.Org and CIBUK.Org, 28 Jan 2024

Where this €43.5 billion in 2022 went

Below are the top 5 regions which benefited from personal transfers by migrants in just one year (2022)

  1. Africa : € 13.6 bn
  2. Eastern Asia : € 12.5 bn
  3. Western Asia (Incl Iran) : € 3.9 bn
  4. South America : € 5.6 bn
  5. Central America : € 2.4 bn
  6. TOTAL (incl. ‘Others’) : €43.5 bn

The figures above represent our best estimate as to the true picture of the Top 5 regions receiving monies from migrants in the EU.]

10 years ago in 2013, the outflow was € 24.9 bn. This has now increased by 75%.

Given the huge increase in the number of asylum seekers since 2022 which we reported in Part I of this report, the amounts being sent back to their home countries by migrants will of course now be much, much higher.

Why this matters

Asylum seekers receive money from their host country in a variety of ways, generally from benefits. Naturally where they are allowed to work this gives them even more money.

If this money is spent in the country that gave it to them (or they earned it by working), this adds to that country’s GDP and boosts its economy. Conversely, with €43.5 BILLION in 2022 being ‘repatriated’, this is lost and has no impact on GDP in the host country.

Observations

We are unaware of any report in the mainstream media about the level of funds received by migrants being sent back to their home countries.

When Rejoiners and the woke lobby talk about the benefits of mass immigration, this seems to get lost. What our report shows, using the official figures from the EU, is that this is a major issue. Whilst we don’t have the comparative UK data there is no reason to believe the situation in the UK will be any different to that in the EU.

The indigenous population spend the bulk of their money in the UK, which aids the economy and adds to GDP. If migrants are sending such a high proportion of what they receive back to their home countries, this benefits those countries instead.

We look forward to seeing the official UK figures on this.
