The AfD’s popularity keeps growing and the EU Commission is getting worried
On Monday the Leader of the right-of-centre ‘Alternative für Deutschland’ party, Alice Weidel, gave an interview to the Financial Times.
In this interview the leader of the most popular party in Germany made some astonishingly positive comments about Brexit.

The AfD Leader’s interview with the FT
Alice Weidel has been leader of the AfD since 2022. In that time the AfD’s fortunes have risen considerably, according to German public opinion. In her interview with the FT on Tuesday she said she would hold a Brexit-style referendum on membership of the EU if her party comes to power. She described the UK’s exit from the EU as “dead right”.
Ms Weidel went on to talk about the “democratic deficit” in the EU, curbing the powers of the European Commission, and she then described the Commission as an “unelected executive”, as Facts4EU.Org has done many times over the years.“It’s a model for Germany, that one can make a sovereign decision like that.”
“If we fail to rebuild the sovereignty of the EU member states, we should let the people decide, just as Britain did. And we could have a referendum on ‘Dexit’ - a German exit from the EU.”
Einen Moment, bitte
At this point we must say that there is zero chance of the Alternative für Deutschland taking power in Germany any time soon. They may be the most popular party with the public, but all the other parties have ruled out any alliance with them.
Without that – and because of the fragmented nature of European politics due to the PR systems they have for elections – the AfD will gain seats in State legislatures this year and in the Bundestag but will have no chance of forming a government as things stand.
Nevertheless, what the AfD is doing is shifting the debate in Germany.
The future under an AfD government
Asked by the FT about her priorities, Ms Weidel said the AfD would “introduce effective border controls... and immediately deport foreign criminals”. She added that they would reform the tax system, slim down the state and end Germany’s shift to Net Zero.
This might sound familiar to British voters wishing Rishi Sunak would do this in the United Kingdom.

Observations
Quite why EU politicians still think the FT is in any way relevant is beyond us, but they do. It is read in Brussels but not across the United Kingdom. We gave up reading it long ago.
Nevertheless, she did the interview and given that almost no-one outside the City of London in the UK reads the FT any more, we have picked out some interesting quotes for our readers.
What our report demonstrates is the shift in the public mood across Europe. From Denmark’s and Sweden’s new conservative governments in the north to Italy’s new conservative government in the south, the people of Europe are voting for change.
In Germany there is still a long way to go, and Alice Weidel of Alternative für Deutschland fully accepts that. The key thing is that all these shifts are slowly hampering the ability of the EU Commission to continue to follow its globalist agenda.
It is perhaps ironic that in the United Kingdom - the country which was the first to secure its freedom from the EU autocratic bloc - the poor performance of the Conservative Government under Rishi Sunak looks set to put the UK on a path to a pro-EU, socialist, globalist path for the next 10 years.
