UK agrees trade deal with Australia, EU fails yet again

For decades the United Kingdom’s membership of the European Union froze out the traditionally-strong links between the British and our Australian cousins. After many years the EU has still been unable to agree a trade deal with Australia, but the newly-independent UK managed it in just one year.

In late October last year Australia walked away from negotiations with the EU over a trade deal. It first did this three months earlier but now it seems that the latest impasse is likely to last for two years before either side tries again.

Observations

Since Brexit the UK has agreed a free trade agreement with Australia, has agreed a submarine deal called AUKUS, (which severely upset France's President Macron), and is generally improving relations between the two Commonwealth countries.

In October last year Facts4EU.Org reported on the collapse in trade talks between the EU and Australia. It seems that even when a globalist government is in power in Australia, the EU still can't agree sensible trading arrangements.

Talks on the EU Australia trade deal have stopped for the time being because neither side was willing to compromise. Australia are seeking an FTA with the EU because it has the potential to open up a market for Australian goods and services of 446 million people and a nominal GDP of US$16.6 trillion in 2022.
The Australian Govt state the key benefits as:
Significantly improved market access for Australian exports
Guaranteed access for Australian services providers
Expansion of two-way investment flows
A more predictable and seamless business environment
Reduced costs and red tape, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises
.
The opposite of what Brexit has delivered for the UK.

The UK has an FTA with the EU, so Australia is seeking what we in the UK already have. Nothing more than that.

And it will not be zero tariff zero quota like the TCA. No other country has a deal like that. Even the proposed EU/US deal still had quotas

3. Sparky , "Talks on the EU Australia trade deal have stopped for the time being because neither side was willing to compromise." This is untrue. The talks did not just "stop". The Australians pulled out because they recognized that a supposed FTA that imposes import quotas isn't an FTA at all. Why should the Australians be expected to "compromise" on an FTA that is actually an agreement to impose protectionism against Australian exports and not an FTA at all.
An FTA is either about free trade or it is not. Calling something an FTA when it is actually a proposed agreement to impose protectionist quotas is completely dishonest. The Australians recognized that they would be better off trading under WTO rules than by cooperating in an EU scheme to impose protectionist tariff on themselves. They were not "unwilling to compromise" at all. They simply recognized that they were being taken for fools.

By the way, if you do just a tiny bit of digging, you find that Sparky is doing a cut-and-paste from an Australian Government press release, but he has changed one crucial detail from the original. The Australian press release does not in fact say that the list he gives represents the *actual* benefits of an FTA with the EU, but the *potential* benefits, subject to negotiation. In other words, the Australian press release is about their *aims* in negotiating, not about the benefits the negotiations actually delivered. During the negotiations, the Australians discovered that the FTA the EU was offering did not include free access to the EU for Australian exports, but in reality limited them through quotas, so the Australians wisely pulled out of the negotiations.
Sparky's misrepresentation is quite clever, presenting negotiating aims as though they were actual agreements, but that's all it is.

No mention of the EU and what they want. It's just the auzzies that need and want something that the EU can give! How one sided can you get in your support for the EU.
