Only 39% of UK citizens “have a positive image of the EU”, says EU Commission

Is Sir Keir sure he wants to "align more closely" with this unpopular empire?

Facts4EU.Org reveals the damning facts of the slumping opinion of the EU - in the UK and from its own citizens

In its latest official, large-scale survey of its own citizens, published on Friday (29 Nov 2024), the EU Commission has tried to put a positive gloss on the opinion of the EU’s people, claiming “record high trust in the EU in recent years”. Unfortunately our analysis of the data tells a very different story.

On top of this, the EU Commission’s survey of British people and their views of the EU paints a difficult picture for Sir Keir Starmer, with his plans for a ‘closer alignment’ with the EU empire.

The EU’s falling popularity – in the EU and in the UK

Part I: New EU Commission barely scrapes over the line to get approved
Part II (this report) - Only 39% of UK citizens ‘have a positive image of the EU’

In today’s report, the analysis by the Facts4EU.Org think-tank of the raw data underlying the EU Commission’s report on Friday does not present an encouraging picture of the EU’s own public’s views about the EU. And the views of the British public are even worse.

What UK citizens now think about the EU – latest official EU survey, published last Friday

The latest ‘Standard Eurobarometer’ (Autumn 2024) was conducted between 10 Oct and 05 Nov 2024 across the 27 member countries. Overall, 26,525 EU citizens were interviewed face-to-face – a very significant number.

Strangely, the EU also decided to poll UK citizens as part of its in-depth survey, perhaps because of Sir Keir Starmer’s government constantly talking about wanting a “closer alignment” with the EU.

The results may have been a little disappointing for the EU Commission – and for the British Prime Minister. When British people were asked if they had a ‘positive image’ of the EU, only 39% replied in the affirmative.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement.

What the EU's own citizens now think about the EU – with some UK comparisons

Whilst the EU Commission attempted to put a rosy spin on the results of this survey, the results speak for themselves. Significantly less than half (44%) of all EU citizens have ‘a positive image of the EU’.

Observations

Why does Sir Keir want to align more closely with an unpopular regime?

With Sir Keir Starmer and his ministers constantly talking about 'closer alignment' with the EU, the results of our analysis will come as a blow. Naturally, this depends on whether the PM actually cares what people think. With less than four in ten of the population having 'a positive image' of the EU this is not necesarily a good starting point.

It does of course have to be remembered that Sir Keir and his Cabinet were all vociferous Remainers. Furthermore, Sir Keir and some of his colleagues were leading lights in the campaign for "a people's vote" which was designed to overturn the largest democratic vote in British history - one which had already taken place in June 2016. If that Referendum wasn't "a people's vote" we're unsure what is.

In many ways, that flagrant disregard for the clearly expressed view of the British people when they were asked a direct question, should perhaps have been a clear signal of what was to come once they got into power. Facts4EU.Org continues to be non-partisan but we will always speak out when fundamental issues of sovereignty, independence, democracy and freedom are at stake.

Whatever spin they put on this, the Eurobarometer results don't make for comfortable reading in Brussels

Ursula von der Leyen's new EU Commission started work on Monday, with a 'mandate' (not democratic) for five years. Not only did this Commission receive the lowest-ever percentage of approval votes in the EU Parliament, the Commissioners can now see how unpoular the EU is amongst its citizens.

Trust in the EU is below 50%. The number of people having a positive image of the EU is below 50%. What's more, the trend seems to be firmly against them.
