‘Northern Ireland is a totemic issue for independence, sovereignty and democracy globally’
The topic of our latest movie of Sunday’s Global Discussion Forum could not be more important and goes to the very heart of representative democracy: Who governs the United Kingdom?
As things currently stand, Northern Ireland remains partly under the constitutional jurisdiction of the European Union, nearly FOUR YEARS after the United Kingdom left the EU. Although we focus on Northern Ireland, the issue of nation-state democracy and the right of self-determination is one that should be of interest to people all over the world.
In this report we present :
- A video appeal for support by the Rt Hon Sir Iain Duncan Smith MP
- A video appeal for support by Jim Allister KC MP, Leader of the TUV party of Northern Ireland
- A video appeal for support from Baroness the Rt Hon Kate Hoey
- ‘Sovereignty & Democracy – The Movie’ – Full-length video of our interviews with 3 guest speakers
- Key excerpts from the transcripts of the interviews
- What readers can do today, if they care about this issue
Three short video appeals for your support
The first ‘video short’ is by the Rt Hon Sir Iain Duncan Smith MP, former Leader of the Conservative Party, the second is by Jim Allister KC MP, Leader of the TUV party in Northern Ireland, and the third is by the Rt Hon Baroness Kate Hoey. We ask readers to write to their MPs in support of Jim Allister’s Bill. It is important to do this now, today, as the Bill’s all-important Second Reading debate in the House of Commons takes place tomorrow (Fri 06 Dec 2024).

‘Give us our country back’ - Part One
Jim Allister KC MP
On constitutional fundamentals
“When we think about democracy there is something we take for granted and it is the fundamental principle that those who are governed should be electing those who govern. Those who make the laws in any region should be electing those who make the laws.”
On Labour’s MPs who are highly likely to vote against the Bill on Friday
“I would simply say to every MP in the United Kingdom, how would you feel if your constituents were governed by laws that you can’t make, and you can’t change? Would you be so blasé about it? Or would you stand up for them? And that’s really the challenge.”
On the current situation
“We now have the most absurd and undemocratic situation prevailing whereby in 300 areas of law, the laws in those areas are not made by the parliament of the United Kingdom. They are made by the European Parliament, a parliament to whom we elect no-one, a parliament elected by the electors of twenty-seven foreign countries.”
On the imposition of the Customs Code
“The EU's Customs code of course operates on the basis that GB not being a member of the EU is a third or foreign country…But Northern Ireland being treated as EU territory under the agreement, is treated as exactly that - EU territory.
“Under that arrangement Northern Ireland has been left behind within the EU Customs Code and within the EU Single Market for goods.”
Act of Union (1801) - ‘Put into suspension’
“Article six of the actual union established free and unfettered trade, an economic union for the whole United Kingdom. And it is that latter which has been put into suspension, according to the Supreme Court, by reason of our Protocol, because you can't have free or no better trade between within all parts of the United Kingdom.”
On the Allister Mutual Enforcement Bill
“The Private Member's Bill that I'm bringing to the House of Commons this coming Friday (6th December) for second reading is designed to directly address this disenfranchising of the people of Northern Ireland and to liberate us from the colonial rule that we now are subject from the EU.”
“‘Liberating Northern Ireland from the jackboot of EU law.”
Cross-Party Support
We would urge you to email your MP today asking them to support Mr Allister’s Private Member’s Bill, by clicking on the link here.

‘Give us our country back’ (Continued)
Jim Allister KC MP
On how Northern Ireland came to be abandoned
“It came about… by very clever but malevolent diplomacy essentially from the Republic of Ireland, who of course traditionally has always wanted to see what they call the reunification of Ireland.”
On future opportunities
“The election of President Trump could bring an interesting dimension because if he delivers on his threat of tariffs, the United Kingdom more than ever will need a trade deal.”
“But Mr. Trump is not a big fan of the EU. And if he did a trade deal with the UK in present circumstances, he would see the goods that he sends able to pass freely into the EU through the back door of Northern Ireland because of the lack of controls for what passes through.”
“So Mr. Trump might have a part to play in saying to the British government, If you want a trade deal, then you need to shut the back door in the EU because I'm not giving the EU trade deal.”
‘Give us our country back’
Dr Dan Boucher
On the Northern Ireland Protocol
“I was appalled by it… because of the way that it negatively affects part of the United Kingdom… effectively disenfranchising 1.9 million people, the biggest kickback against democracy.”
“I feel that the whole of the United Kingdom is being profoundly weakened and enfeebled morally as a consequence of embracing this compromise. And it's something that I haven't been able to reconcile myself to.”
On the Northern Ireland border
“At the end of the day, its rules are governed by the by the European Union.”
On the Good Friday Agreement
“The Good Friday Agreement essentially was a mechanism… to try and persuade… a small, small minority of people who've been tempted to engage in giving up on democracy… and turning… from the ballot box to the bomb.”
‘Give us our country back’
Ben Habib
On the Northern Ireland Protocol
“The Northern Ireland protocol… is like a regulatory grappling hook into the flesh of Great Britain.”
On the Withdrawal Agreement and the Trade and Co-operation Agreement (TCA)
“Both those treaties need to be terminated, if the United Kingdom is genuinely to become an independent democratic country and to kick off the shackles… of this liberal global order, which stands… in direct opposition to nation states and the ability for nation states to govern themselves.”
On the government’s immigration policy
“If you've only got domestic British agencies involved, you can't possibly break the smuggling gangs because the smuggling is based in Europe. They're not based in the United Kingdom.”
On the cost of immigration
“In the United Kingdom we spend about £50,000 per annum per head on every illegal migrant…France is £5,000. So you've got a massive economic pull to leave France at £5,000 a-head to come to the UK at £50,000 a-head.”
On deterring illegal migrants
“I think mass deportations should take place.”
“Border enforcement is a prerequisite if the nation states of Western civilisation are to survive.”
