Where are most crimes committed and which country is the worst, pro-rata to its population?

When choosing your holiday destination in the EU this summer, the local crime rate is unlikely to be the first factor you think of. Nevertheless Facts4EU.Org thought readers might wish to know where most crimes appear to be committed in the EU, in order to be aware of the risks.

Germany and France have by far the highest number of suspects and offenders in the EU27. These two countries are followed by Italy, Spain and Poland. When analysed by the numbers pro-rata to the local population, however, a different picture emerges.

Below we present our summary of the latest official data from the EU Commission.

So, what about popular summer holiday destinations for Brits?

In terms of popular summer holiday destinations for Brits, France has the most number of crime suspects per head of population, followed by Italy, Portugal, Greece and Spain.

When adjusted for population size, little Luxembourg apparently has the highest number of suspects and offenders in the EU, but it is often the outlier in data like this. The reason is because its official (permanent) population is small but it almost doubles each day because of the number of citizens from neighbouring EU countries who enter daily – to work or for other reasons.
